- Let's go look at the Garden in mid-January. Here in zone 9A, I can grow year-round. You can grow food for your family all year long if you live in a place that has a temperate climate like we have. Let's take a look at what's growing, and let's take a look at plans for how to extend our garden performance with a sneak crop. I think I have just enough time to put in a quick crop before I need to have my spring tomatoes and peppers in the ground.

We’d be so grateful if you would like and share our videos if you find them useful. It helps us immensely.
My vote is for Kohlrabi as well for your sneak crop. In the worst case even if they don't bulb on time, you could eat the greens (typical brassica flavor). Another novel idea is to start marigolds from seed (instead of starting indoors). They transplant super well and you can have heaps of plants to put all around your garden and also give away. Plant the shorter varieties like Jaguar (so pretty) or French dwarf. They bloom super early!
This is my favorite recommendation!
My dad used to use mustard, hot pepper and tobacco too get rid of bugs. He would put it in a jar of water let to sit for a week or so then drain off the juice. He would mix half of the mix woth half dish water after my mom did dishes. Then spray his plants. I think it was rhe smell that kept all the bugs away but it worked. 😀. I really enjoyed seeing a real garden. It's nice to see the good and the bad. Also when thing are ready to go or stay. Thanks again looking forward to your next video. 😀
kale, savoy cabbage, collards, diakon radishes, tatsoi, broccoli rappini, kohlrabi, lettuces, bunching onions/ scallions , small carrots, these can help feed you and your family.
Just like people - some winding down, some bulking up, some babies just starting, some green or orange or yellow, some strong and some weak. Like Jess says, God said he so loved the world. That included dirt, too. I feel very close to him when I'm in my garden.
This is my official get me through the off season video! I will watch this a hundred times! Thank you Scott!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh wow! Your kale is monstrously huge!😲
Thanks Scott, happy gardening to you, too!
Scott, great video and a very needed video for me in zone 8b Mississippi. You know your stuff! Thanks a million and take care!
This is a great video for gardeners to start their day. Now, as the sun rises, I have a clearer idea of what to do today. Makes me wish I had planted carrots a little earlier though. I live in Zone 10b.
Thank you for sharing a real garden. The good the bad and the stages of a garden. Its very much appreciated by me.
So nice to find a garden channel like yours. I’m also on the coast of Texas, 50 miles south of Houston😃
We're practically neighbors. Welcome.
I’m all the way up in zone 4b in Canada but I really appreciate your channel ! Learned a lot since I’ve followed you and I will definitely garden smarter this spring/summer!
Thanks for sharing all your tips with us.
Candied Lemon Peel would be a great way to use up some of those Lemons! I do this with the citris fruits that I'm not using for making homemade vinegar (I use citris vinegars for cleaning). They are a great gluten free snack, just the peel + sugar + water and they store well! Thanks for the update, it's motivating!
Can't wait until my Kale looks like yours!
I'm so glad to find a fellow gardener in zone 9a. I'm over in south-central Louisiana. We sure are blessed to be able to garden year round in our zone. But I'm ready for Spring plantings for sure...it'll be here before we know it!
Awesome video ❤️ your garden 😊🇬🇧👍
Wow! Turnip fries?!! I might be able to sneak those in at supper!
Ahh I am jealous, it's still green up here but everything is looking super sad, supposed to get a big dump of snow this weekend. Garden looks good!
Your Wildman doc is awesome! LOL. Looking forward to more.
@@ScottHead Haha thanks so much!
Scott, if by chance you have onions available to plant where you are, you could plant some of those and instead of waiting for them to grow big bulbs, you could harvest them for green onions.
Love this video!! Thank you!
That was a fun tour, I enjoy your channel.
You should do beets if you like them. 50 to 60 days and they are done. Another excellent video!
Very nice crops , grow or die people get with the program!
I'm so excited to see so much green still. I miss having a full green garden and can't wait for spring to come!
Lol. Sneak crop. I love the idea and am totally going to try that. What about arugula?
Good morning from Spain Love your garden i know what you mean about lemmons we have over a 1000 lemmon trees we will be getting ready to pick soon
Ohhh I'm crying 😢 lemony tears of jealousy. I'll be planting my tree in March.
you can harvest your lemons, squeeze them all and heat up the juice to 180 or so degrees and hot water bath can them so you can have fresh lemon juice for lemon aid in the summer and for cooking and such.
Lol we need to see Donald the guard goose!
He's in some previous videos but I'll get a video of him when we go feed him and introduce my son to the chanel, I'm going to include his various fruit projects on Black Gumbo Southern Gardening.
Yod Fah is my favorite
I love Meyer lemons...I freeze some juice and when my instant pot needs a fresh smell, I throw in a few and pressure cook the squeezed rind.
Oh, my seed finally came, my single seed challenge is a Honey Nut, Butter nut squash. A small bush type and I’ve never grown a winter squash. LOL!!!
Good tip, will try cleaning my instant pot lid with lemon, see if the smell goes away.
It helps, & after I turn the lid up to help air too.
Your kale is impressive! It's really filled in and is so thick!
spinach, lacinato kale, swisschard, rutabaga, burdock, celeriac, sorrel, potatoes, peas, these you can do as well . I am grow zone 8A and you are warmer than I am
I appreciate your channel! I just started seeds indoors, and they are doing quite well!
You could put peas in to eat as sprouts?
Favorite greens
Nice walk through Scott. For a fast crop perhaps green onions, or more turnips.
You could try bok choy or red Russian kale for your quick crop. I am in zone 9a and both grew really fast for me this year.
I’m in zone 9b, thanks to you I checked. My tomato’s are about 2inches hope the get green and hardy. Using a grow light, new to me.
Make sure and harden them off before you put them outside for good.
Great video Scott! It's really getting me so excited to start my seeds. Just need to wait a bit still.
Dayton Texas my wife told me about your channel im impressed so you have a new subscriber here
I replanted my fig tree last Sunday cut back the root ball and branches. My oh my 8 years in a wine barrel all root hardly any soil. No wonder the fruit kept falling off. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻💖
Aww dang i was going to say radishes. Thats what i put in.
Collard greens in that bed. Mmmm.
Or Red Leaf Mustard, maybe more cabbage? Do you make sauerkraut?
I do make sauerkraut, have a video on it. Good stuff!
My peas are just taking their time. It has been very mild and sunny so I’m not sure why. We are going to get some rain this weekend. Maybe they will get to work 😜. I have been harvesting the most beautiful broccoli and spinach the last 2 weeks.
Plant Kholrabi. Hoss tools has a 30 day kholrabi :)
Nice, I just ordered some. Thank you!
Your garden looking amazing! I wish I could grow like that year round! I’m not sure if you like kohlrabi or rutabagas but they would be great to grow in that space. Looking forward to this 2021 growing season!
How about red mustard greens? They are cold hardy, mature pretty fast and look gorgeous.
In my zone 9a you can grow daffodils in January, hahaha! Your low temps must not be a low as ours, low 20's, high teens. I'm just about to start my cool weather crops. We have about 3 weeks between last frost and 100 degree days. It's a dice game here in Northern CA.
I'd cover crop it. Mustard maybe
Kohlrabi would work!
You said in video you weren't eating the lettuce so I wouldn't plant more. Baby Corn would get my vote.
Is it to early to plant green beans? Maybe you can put few bushes of green beans between peas I m not sure if this will work but maybe some new ones sea for experiment 🔬 🤷🏻♀️
The reason I started gardening, was to grow beets for pickling. Man that mustard and kale looks tasty! I purchased some elderberry seeds and I am stratifying them now. I am growing lots and lots of new things this year. I am working on more trees, one in particular called the Bee Bee Tree.
Hi everyone, First day in the group. We just moved to germany in august of 2020. what do you do with all that lemons? I love watching your show. Where is your garden?
We juice them and sometimes freeze it in cubes, and use it anywhere lemon juice is called for inn recipes. We always have too much. We give away a significant part of the harvest.
New subscriber. Thanks for video. do you have a plan of what you grow in spring , summer, fall, winter do you have a list?
sketch up s plan, I showed it in a recent video but can't seem to find which one. I'll be growing tomatoes and peppers, pole beans, cucumbers, herbs and probably chard in the spring, not sure what else yet.
Love your videos Scott - I am in Sugar Land and want to plant two apple trees. What variety are you planting for our climate?
At the end of this video (near the 20 minute mark) I list all the varieties, I have actually forgotten some of them.
ua-cam.com/video/tPaOsyGHpTE/v-deo.html
Nice cabbage ❤️ what kind of fertiliser do you use?
Just two or three times a year dressing with compost, and occasionally fish emulsion, but have not used fish emulsion since the summer.
Have you tried growing kohlrabi before? They seem like they'd do great at this time of year & in that area.
(or you could try a larger radish variety, such as a daikon)
Never tried it. Interesting idea
@@ScottHead I only thought of it because Baker Creek has TWICE sent me free Kohlrabi seeds. I’m taking it as a sign 😆
Your pea plants looks great. I am trying to grow some snow peas here in Phoenix zone 9b. I started them a couple months ago. They are almost 5 feet tall but they haven't started flowing yet. Would phosphate from dried bananas help?
Maybe some phosphate a little more quickly available, something water soluble
You could use beets.
I seem to have a bare earth/direct sow conflict of interest. How does that work? Do I just leave the seeded soil uncovered and mulch once I'm confident that most have sprouted? I direct sowed some flowers in mid Dec and have a few sprouts but... I just wanna keep adding seeds and/or maybe some transplants or amendments... i'm itchin' over it! LOL ...I concerned about having the bare soil too long, I'm risking it, maybe, while it's not too hot? maybe i could amend with a thin layer of some amendment?
Pardon, I forgot to say that I've become a huge fan and I think you should definitely plant something leafy in your available spot. Thank you!!!
Just move slowly. Some of your seeds may need warmer weather. Mulch later. Let the seeds come up.
What do you do with all those lemons? Can you tell us what variety they are and will they grow in zone 5?
They are Meyer lemons, we make desserts with the juice and use them whenever lemon juice is called for in a recipe. Im not sure how far north they will grow. Google the name Meyer Lemon and you should come up with some info.
I'm in 9a and just started pak choi and swiss chard. Also planting daikon radish where my future tomatoes go. I hear they deter nematodes. My radishes didn't make nice bulbs. They looked like a thick root. I grow in a raised bed 16" deep. The leaves looked big and healthy. Any thoughts?
If you are talking about the daikon radishes not bulking up, it is likely because they are better suited to planting in fall and they bulk up over the cool season.
@@ScottHead no globe variety in rainbow, planted in September maybe needed to be later. We were still too hot. Today its 80 in central FL.
When are you starting your tomatoes and peppers (transplants)?
I started my tomatoes last week and will stRt my peps next week. Check my vids for tomato starting and also when to do so
I'm planning on growing peas and beans for the first time this year. After doing some research, I see that it's recommended to use an inoculant on them. Do you inoculate your legumes?
Never have in the past.
If you garden with compost, then the bio-diversity is in the soil and you will not need inoculates. If you are growing in poor soil and using commercial fertilizers, then I would use an inoculate.
Maybe some beats, or carrots.
Would mustard greens work? Will they stop the snails?
My mustard greens don't seem bothered by snails, while everything else around them are getting devoured by snails.
I'll buy some lemons from you if you really are sick of them!!
Hey Scott. I'll buy some too. Meyer Lemons are my favorite. It's a shame that I can't find any in the stores. I'm also close to you too. Need a quick fund raiser? Sell us some lemons. I just made my flu bomb with my last two Meyers. Love everything about your garden...and your kale too.
Lettuce.
Scott, can you help me start my potatoes for this area. I have my grow bags and potatoes but I keep getting so many different instructions about soil preps. Please assist. Thank you.
Search my channel for “potatoes” and you will find two video, the second one explains a mistake we made and may be useful.
Scott, are the leaves on the Brussels Sprouts edible?
Not sure. They seem very tough.
When do you expect to get elderberries?
This summer but not a lot yet.
Spring onions?
Ok and Texas should censor Garth!
Garth?
@@ScottHead oh yes since he sided up to Biden, I guess you agree with him. Thought Bonnie Blue meant something to you, but Biden I didn’t expect. Sorry. Enjoy your show. Do collards with shrimp shells in soil.
I don't like country music or biden... bleh.
What is stealth planting?
Planting in a public space.
Where are you located?
Friendswood, TX
@@ScottHead I am in Florida zone 10b. I think this should work for me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Why do you throw the outer leaves away? Did you know the outer leaves are more nutritious 😳!
They aren't my favorites for taste and texture.
I juiced my outer leaves along with other veggies.
looks like those ducks are getting the boot tomorrow! Good riddance!
