I first heard this song played by a trad jazz band in a cellar bar in Cambridge, England, in 1987 as a 15 year old kid (I sneaked in and pretended I was 18). There were a load of drunken undergraduates dancing around and they kept shouting 'Sheik of Araby' at the band until they played it.
This song was recorded before any vocals were added. Yet the words actually make the song more enjoyable for all the artists that recorded it, with or without them, i.e. Django Reinhardt et al.! Yet Fats Waller and Fats Domino did justice to the song as well! Amazing!
The Lord bless you and keep you the Lord make His face 🤣 to shine upon you and be gracious to you the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you PEACE ☮️🕊️ Go HUG someone today IF they're been vaccinated and Happy Birthday to Louis Armstrong and Milo Thatch of Atlantis! Blessings and Hugs 💖💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕!
It was written by some Tin Pan Alley guys who probably never heard of Arabi, LA. Rudolph Valentino was all the craze at the time as The Sheik. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sheik_of_Araby
Wrong. He was singing from 1926 on. The most influential singer of the 20th century, everything changed after Louis (and Bing) and Bessie Smith. Just listen to singers before them.
Louis was the first improvising singer on record, opening up pop music for us all and was possibly the second scatter (after Ukulele Ike) He was, as Duke Ellington put it "beyond category" or sui generis.
Louis Armstrong lived the post-Civil War years, then completely within the Jim Crow and Civil Rights eras. Yet never once was he ever involved in politics or anything racist or demeaning. He was just being a human being who offered his talents and abilities to the world and they/we all love him for that ever more!

Pretty bass runs with the tuba! This player, Matteson, was really good.

As a singer Louis Armstrong was a good trumpet player.
+SpeedyNeutrino172 He didn't start singing till half way through his career after he had become famous as a trumpet player.
