Your videos are so wonderful! I’m a gramma who has always wanted to learn ceramics. Your videos have made that possible for me. Thank you for sharing your many skills and knowledge with everyone!
This is better than my college course on adding a flange, however, my directions are to add a flange to both the base pot and lid. I am searching for another video now, unless anyone has something to offer in the way of tips for me. Thank you! 😊
I guess the ultimate question is why would you add it to both? If it has a specific function that is served beyond adding it to only one that makes sense. However, if you can achieve the desired outcome with one, it seems like it may be unnecessary?
Thank you so much for showing the different ways of doing this! I just completed my first semester of a ceramics class and don't want to lose my "touch" while I'm on break. Going to buy some air dry clay for the time being and make some jewelry holders with lids using some of these methods :)
Such a wonderful and clear video! Lovely pots! I have a question. You mention waiting until the handle and lid have the same moisture? Before scoring and slipping. How does that work since the lid and the handle keep drying and one is more moist then the other?
I normally have my kids store the handle and the lid together so the moisture will even out between them before they attach. It could be within a plastic bag, but we now use plastic boxes with plaster as damp boxes to help keep everything moist.
I do have a video on making notched cards here! ua-cam.com/video/DzrRQJ5YE4U/v-deo.html That doesn't show those like the ones in the video, but if you want a still photo to trace, here is a link to a photo of a few in my Googledrive: drive.google.com/file/d/1QC1_zmeYEjEJJAdB744eQ7Vt_2OhMN9O/view?usp=sharing
Great methods. TY !! I am having trouble imagining the size of the notches on the card. Could you post a picture of them so I could perhaps print and copy?
Hi, really great video! Can I ask about sizing? So if the pot is leather hard & the lid being formed is fairly soft, and it's sized at that point to fit the leather hard pot, when it shrinks through drying will it not be too small? Maybe I missed something in your explanation, sorry. Thanks 🙏
The moisture of the two are actually close enough not to be an issue for the kids. We use damp boxes- so when the flange is attached- it will be the close enough to same moisture as the lid which should be just about the same for the pot. The sizing hasn’t been an issue for them working with these moistures. That being said- these lids aren’t super snug or precise enough to cause fit issues. I hope that helps!!
At school, I just recycle the clay in a pug mill. If doing it in my home studio, I would gather the scraps in a bucket, dry them out, then eventually add water to recycle. I have a video on recycling clay in my home studio if that would help... ua-cam.com/video/2lPAbSxaXBU/v-deo.html
I do apologize it was so fast, unfortunately, I had to have this one in particular pretty fast for my students to be able to watch it and get the information quickly! Too slow on something like this and I lose their attention entirely! :(
I have been a potter for 22 years and I am so excited to learn new little tricks to make creating easier!!! Thank you so much for your videos.
Wonderful!
Love the pace of your lessons.

KaransPotsAndGlass 👌🏾 Thank you for the clear explanation...:) I have a lot to learn. But I do love clay!
I loved the idea of using a notched card. Do you have any templates or videos demonstrating for or how to cut these notches?

Thanks Karan for another great video showing the various types of lids!😊😊🤗🤗

Here you go!!! This shows a ruler next to the notches! drive.google.com/file/d/1wroWGTmb2w8LP2STgqORaXzudo-bc7pS/view?usp=sharing
I should say- the "half" notch is just missing the long piece from on the back side!

Thank you! :)
Wow ur really smart(:
How do you deal with the clay you are taking off?

Please, slow it down. The speed-up was too fast and hard to watch. Created some motion sickness. Otherwise, you're pots are great.
