  • Whilst working with Hard Paste Porcelain to make our own pots, Steve Harrison and I too a day off to tour some of the local potteries including this workshop where they were putting together previously thrown sections to form large jars, we then went to visit the site where they were decorated, glazed and fired. May 2015. Leonard smith.com.au, Tenmoku.org

These large sections look almost bone dry - at any rate, dryer than what I would think of as leather hard - yet they are luted together and don't split apart in drying and firing? Boggles the mind...

      they are bone dry

Probably a combination of the large mating area (over an inch wide, minimum) and the immense weight of the sections, plus the wetting of the edges to be joined which would slow down the wicking away of moisture.

I am trying to suss that out too! Perhaps the glazing is what gives the final form its integrity!

He pours on something right before adding the next section. It could be a vinegar slip, which is very good at binding bone dry pieces together. Then glazing may add to keeping it bound as well.

@@immortal.bog.wizard oh i didn't know vinegar slip could help bind dryer pieces, interesting
