The idea that he carries on "digging" but with his pen, reminds me of something Ted Hughes says in Poetry in the Making about "capturing animals" (in his case, poetry as an alternative continuation of the hunting/poaching that he used to do with his brother)... I know Hughes and Heaney were friends - maybe they talked about this...
