  • Rainelle Krause performs Mozart's classic aria from The Magic Flute with the ENO Orchestra.
Simon McBurney’s five-star production of The Magic Flute returns to the ENO in 2024, promising an evening of magic, romance and timeless music.
Mozart’s opera follows the adventures of Prince Tamino and the bird-catcher Papageno on their quest to rescue Pamina. Their search becomes one for truth and reason, love and enlightenment. Nothing is quite what it seems in this surprising, fantastical journey.

Saw this in person yesterday and it was stunning. Nailing both the music and the acting in this aria is so difficult it's next to never achieved, and I don't know if it was just a night when everything came together spectacularly well, but Krause just smashed it - and moreover did so while performing the whole thing from a wheelchair. One of the most impressive things I've ever seen. Gave me goosebumps. Brought the house down. just wow.

Agreed! I don't think I've heard an audience so silent before as during the aria - absolutely stunning.

I dislike that the English is barely understandable.
This is why I prefer Pop singers who don’t perform “perfect Opera” but modified Opera in order to give it the emotion and enunciation that allow the words to penetrate

No point in singing in English if it's totally unintelligible

I hate opera sung in the wrong language.

      @@JulesCreativityPersonified it's English national Opera.
That's the actual mission statement/purpose of its Inception: opera in English.

@@XPRT10R Thanks. I didn't realise that. I hate opera sung in English. Love Italian the best with those lovely long vowel endings. Won't be buying tickets at all then.

@@JulesCreativityPersonified they've actually mounted some works class productions over the decades with top notch singers. Italian opera in English can be hit and miss sometimes, but it all depends on the ability of the translator/librettist.
But it works superbly well with all Mozart, with German operas, Czech opera, russian operas, not to mention the numerous ones actually conceived inn English, or with an original double libretto.

@@XPRT10R Thanks. I might try some in that case. Really began appreciating opera about four years ago now. I am becoming very fussy over the performers and listen to the cast before I attend. Just back from Guilio Cesare in Monaco - Cecelia Bartoli was the draw. It was okay but a bit disappointing. I saw Peter Mattei and Ling Fang in Don Giovanni last year which was superb. I am off to Paris tomorrow actually to see Alceste and another Gulio. I am disappointed at the Glyndebourne choice of Queen of the Night in this years festival. Just got tickets for the Bayreuth Baroque Festival later in the year. A bit addicted really Ha ha. Joyce Di Donata is a must next! Went to La Scala to see Marriage of Figaro. Paid a fortune for the seats in the boxes and couldn't see half of the stage. Then I read the reviews of the theatre LOL! So much more to hear......

nooooooooooo. Speed all over the place, just not good. Sorry. Pronunciation bad. English didn't help at all. Won't be buying a ticket for this.

@@Justforcruise240 Your one of those 'wokers' who think an opinion is toxic? I don't like it and I don't agree with you and I am therefore toxic? Are you a narcissist? Just asking cos they think anyone whose opinion differs from theirs is toxic. LOL I won't remain in my house though. I will go to performances this year where the opera is unmolested - like the Monteverdi Festival,
The Bayreuth Festival. La Scala Milan and the Royal Opera House.

It was written in German so that's what it should be sung in. The libretto and the music are in synergy and I don't think that should be messed with.
