How did you deprime the brass when it was dirty ? Did you use a a universal deprimimg die , or puch them out with a pin and mallet on an anvil ? I usually wash or tumble dirty brass with the spent primers in the pocket before running them through a resizing die . I was in the US Navy as a Radar Operator , and one of my side jobs was polishing and maintenance of brass firefighting fittings . I used military grade Cool Aid to clean brass and bronze . The active ingredient was ascorbic acid .

I found your video in my feed. I’m just getting into reloading. I appreciate your advice on cleaning brass. I just ordered a Lee Classic Loader for .45ACP. It will be here in about a week. I can’t wait! Thanks again!
Awesome advice, bro. My dad just bought me a RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme Master Reloading Kit, for Christmas. It comes with pretty much everything except a tumbler, dies, and shell holders. I'll use this method to clean my brass. Thanks.
Bro this is what I’ve always thought like why not just use dish soap and and hot water or something like that. I figured people didn’t do it because it made the rounds dangerous but I guess this is proof right here that you can do it and that’s not the case so that’s awesome I’m gonna start doing this for sure. I only press 45 colt and I only do it for personal use at most 100 rounds at a time so this is perfect for me. Just reloading on a budget
Try it in a small amount first and work your way up to more until you find your sweet spot for how much you can reasonably process at a time. I once bit off more than I could chew and I ended up leaving the solution on the brass for too long.
Modern Mountain Man will do. Looks like you’ve got about a pound to 2lbs there. Is there a weight to ingredients formula? I’m at it right now. I separated the cleanest from the most tarnished. I’m only gonna try about a pound or two for both. However if you know the ratio, I’ll use that
I've been reloading shells everything from a 38 all the way up to 444 Marlin and I've always used one of them little cheap. Lee classics, if you don't load a lot of brass, those lead classics are just fine and easy to use
A vibratory Tumbler only cost about $60 at Harbor freight. Use lizard litter from Petsmart instead of buying the expensive stuff from reloading supply companies. Make a mixture of 50/50 mineral spirits/New Finish car polish. Add a few squirts to your Tumbler just before tumbling your brass. After about two hours the brass will come out clean and shiny. Tear off a few 2 inch square pieces from a USED dryer sheet and throw them into the Tumbler with your brass. They will pick up a lot of tumbler dust and prolong the life of the tumbling media.
I use a jelly jar, 2 pounds of steel pins, up to 50 223, or 100 9mm all in the jar, hot water, 1 cc of citric acid powder, 3 cc of liquid laundry soap. Close the jar tight. Shake for a minute, let sit for a minute. Repeat until you can see nice clean primer pockets. Sometimes as little as 20 minutes, never as long as an hour. Strain through a bandana in a colander. Shake the pins out of the cases into the cloth in the colander. Rinse the brass well. Put the pins back in the jelly jar. Throw the wet brass onto a towel on top of the cloths drier and let it sit there for a few loads. But I'm not in a rush, this is just something to do in my spare time.
I am not sure where I told him that category but I bought the 50th Anniversary Lee Reloading Kit and it came with a lot of cool ass stuff but I don't know if it's like you know I'm sure it's not top grade but it's definitely a step up from not having nothing LOL
This is an old NRA cleaning method from years ago....Hornaday also recommends a 50/50 water vinegar mix for cleaning up Pyrodex shells....I take this one step further and mix up 2 tablespoons of baking soda with water and rinse all the shells of and then I give it a good rinsing of clear water....the baking soda is said to neutralize the vinegar then the water after is to rinse the baking soda off....

Modern Mountain Man Thanks! I'm very new to reloading so this is very helpful! Just one more question: would cleaning about 50 cases each time be a good place to start?
I did. That step is a matter of opinion. I like to do it for two main reasons. 1. Cleaning the primer pocket and 2. When I deprime and resize I use lube, if I do that step before washing, then the wash can remove any lube residue

Depends on how bad it is. If it was left in the vinegar to long or not rinsed properly, better to be safe than sorry. If it’s a slight pink tint I would not worry
If you let the acid leach the zinc out of the brass, it can weaken the alloy. This is why it’s a quick wash, rinse and dry recipe. I have another recipe that is less acidic and it can be left on for longer. Stay tuned for that video.
@@ModernMountainMan thats exactly the info i was curious about because i actually want to soften the brass up. I'm cleaning them to use in resin projects, not to reload. I was going to anneal them but this may be a easier way to make them easier to work with and cut

I'm NOT planning to reload the brass. would I still need to put them in a toaster oven? Can I leave it on the baking sheet to air dry?
The toaster isn’t necessary, it just helps it go faster.
Thank you! Since they will be going in a Christmas ornament... I didn't want to work my butt off cleaning them =)
As long as you rinse them well you should be fine
Does each casing have to be buffed afterwards? Or can they go straight to drying? Also is air drying fine?
You want to get the vinegar off of it, plus buffing provides an opportunity to inspect. Air drying is a fine, it just takes longer.
Modern Mountain Man Thanks! I'm very new to reloading so this is very helpful! Just one more question: would cleaning about 50 cases each time be a good place to start?
Yes. With this method you want to keep it at a manageable size.
Thanks alot... i want to clean my casings for jewelry use, and its a great video!!
Thanks 🙏
great video! im very sorry, i was definitely paying attention, but did you deprime before cleaning?
I did. That step is a matter of opinion. I like to do it for two main reasons. 1. Cleaning the primer pocket and 2. When I deprime and resize I use lube, if I do that step before washing, then the wash can remove any lube residue
@@ModernMountainMan thank you so much! I'll be beginning reloading soon. ive got a hornady lock n load kit on the way. ill be watching more of your vids!
@@teiwaztim1482 Awesome! I am planning a beginners reloading video soon.
@@ModernMountainMan awesome news. iv8888 does a great reload vid aswell. im plugging as many sources as i can, plus reading as many books on the subject as o can find. btw, im a mountain feller also. i reside in southern west virginia. if you dont mind my asking, from where do you hail?
@@teiwaztim1482 Southwest Virginia
I did this but some cases have some pink spots here and there, you think they are okay to reload?
Should be fine. Next time be careful how long you soak them and make sure you rinse it well.
The pink is due to vinegar. That’s my understanding anyway. Citric acid or lemishine doesn’t generally do that if you use a small amount.

Some of my brass had a coppery or pink color after doing this. In your experience is that normal.
If you let it set in the vinegar to long or if you don’t rinse it well, the vinegar will leach the zinc from the brass and give it that color.
@@ModernMountainMan is it still usable for reloading or should it be trashed?
Depends on how bad it is. If it was left in the vinegar to long or not rinsed properly, better to be safe than sorry. If it’s a slight pink tint I would not worry

thanks!!!
TWO FAR your welcome!

What happens if the zinc comes out of the brass?
If you let the acid leach the zinc out of the brass, it can weaken the alloy. This is why it’s a quick wash, rinse and dry recipe. I have another recipe that is less acidic and it can be left on for longer. Stay tuned for that video.
@@ModernMountainMan thats exactly the info i was curious about because i actually want to soften the brass up. I'm cleaning them to use in resin projects, not to reload. I was going to anneal them but this may be a easier way to make them easier to work with and cut
Well it will alter the color as well
@@ModernMountainMan dang.... heat it is. Thanks 👍
What happens if you leave it in the solution for like 2-3 hours?
It turns your brass pink as it leaches some of the zinc outn
@@ModernMountainMan does that damage it at all? Cause some of the brass it pink now
I am not 100% sure on that one. In the past if I saw one that was overly pink, I threw it away. Brass is cheap enough that if I question it’s integrity at all, it’s out.
I still tumble my brass. Haven't try any wet systems yet
Give it a shot ;)
@@ModernMountainMan dry tumbling is quicker and easier.
Thanks

Probably good for a couple of days in school.
you forgot the most important ingredient:
Elbow Grease
Very true!
How strong was the vinegar?
Standard white vinegar
what you mean by standard 5,10 or 15%
Mine was 5%
Thanks a lot
I already tried with 5% and I kept it for about 1 hour.
I had to brush it a little bit.
It looks good, thanks again.

Hey is my brass okay it changed color I think I had my heat up too high or should I throw them out
Describe the color change a little more
@@ModernMountainMan I mean it looks like a rainbow lol looks like when a tail pipe gets to hot
Yeah, I wouldn’t risk it.

Can you do this method even with the used primer on the brass casing?
Yes. I remove them because I like to get the primer pockets extra clean.
Must have plenty of water
