My doctor refused to do a natural birth after I had a previous C - section. It’s very dangerous. Women can lose a lot of blood after birth. Because your uterus tears and dr’s can’t tell unless you’re in a hospital. Condolences to the family.
I had Two V-backs after a C-section. But it was in the hospital under my doctors care and Nurses constantly with me. A home birth after a C-section would be so risky. The mid-wife should have Never agreed to that. Especially with her training, she should have known.
I think it’s difficult when someone doesn’t have medical training is told by someone that HAS had training and has experience with this, coupled with the mindset of people believing with childbirth that “the body knows what to do”, they trust the person with the experience and lord only knows what else she might’ve said on the phone the he in hindsight is embarrassed about. Moreover, the pain that poor woman experienced probably went back to the thinking of my body “knows” what to do and thinks contractions are THAT bad…. Who knows. My heart goes out to the family.
Who told this woman she could have a vaginal birth without a doctor if she’s already had a c-section once? Oh lord. She was a. Nurse! She knew better! This is so sad. Why didn’t anyone call 911 sooner.
There is a midwife here on UA-cam (I forget her name) African American woman, who has done many AHB after c-sections and they were all successful. 🤷♀️ This midwife (Or was she a doula?) seems like she knows her stuff extremely well. I’ve seen her have to call the ambulance a few times too, but I’d rather her do that than to end up with mom and babe deceased. 🙏
If your midwife is 6 hours late, you go to the ER!!! Why didn’t the husband/father make a decision himself sooner? Was he just trusting his nurse wife? And why would the wife select a midwife who lives 3 hrs away? And the wife ignores her C section? Sorry but there is negligence from father, the nurse mother, as well as the midwife!!
I don't think he liked her very much. Otherwise, he would've dialed 3 digits. He could've saved her life so easily, however he decided this empty-head would ruin the older kids with her trendy nonsense, and he made his decision. Subconsciously.
Call 911 and instead the dad drove her to the hospital. They knew it should’ve been a hospital birth from the beginning, they knew this was unsafe. Plus a midwife who lived 3 hours away?
I live in a small town. The closest hospitals are 40 to 50 minutes away. My friend tried to hire a midwife who lives 30 minutes away but she advised against a home birth, she told her that if anything went wrong she felt even a 30 minute ambulance ride to the hospital could be fatal.

Growing up in Africa, my parents had me and my siblings at home with the help of a midwife, because the next available hospital was hours away and not accessible. Why in America, anybody wants to have a home birth is beyond me. You have the privilege of access to a hospital equipped with professionals and life saving measures.
People usually want to have a home birth because they are comfortable in their home and/or uncomfortable at the hospital. Some people just see hospitals as bad places

I let the surgeon decide how he is going to remove my gall bladder. Call me crazy. People are goofy. Then for the years the kids are little and moms are all together talking they can sing their own praises about no drugs during birth, how they told their midwife exactly what their birth plan was and it went off perfectly. No one cares. Few people have control over such things. As if they are better people for not needing a c section, or feeling the pain or not needing forceps. Doctors don’t know what they are doing. Why don’t they know about birthing babies? If their spouse was having a heart attack or their kid a seizure they would take them to ER call 911 and let the doctors be without micromanaging them.
I think the reason you don't understand is because your parents raised you and your siblings with some sense. Your comment leads me to believe you're not the kind of person that hires a videographer to record your greatest failure for posterity.
Unfortunately some people have terrible experiences in hospitals. I’ve heard countless stories of nurses and doctors not listening to pregnant patients complaints just because they feel they know better than the patient. Women have died giving birth all because the nurses and doctors refuse to listen to them, I’ve also seen new mothers complaining of long lasting pain from certain procedures done in hospitals (such as permanent back pains, and doctors cutting the patient even when it was completely unnecessary)
@@lilyouyou according to whom? This woman heard it’s a badge of honor to go against medical advice and do it your way. To do so you should find a midwife. They will do what you want. Some can’t math. They say it’s safer. A few things about that. This midwife had 3 babies die in a year. She delivered 31. 10% of pregnancies resulted in death. There is probably some double counting here. The hospital if they ended up in hospital got credit for those deaths. 10% of babies don’t die in hospitals. Midwives are not supposed to take risk patients. She did take a risk patient. Did mom lie to her? So their stats would be lower than hospitals cause the midwife does not handle the risky patients. And risk does not mean mom will die if she has it. Just that is risky without the watching over and the interventions and monitors the midwife does not have with her in her car. Should she bother to make it there. This family was focused on the video and making a home birth work cause she wanted to midwife and felt it was necessary at any cost. Surely nothing would go wrong.
Ok let me understand this. A woman who should not have been practicing as a midwife was still working and a nurse who's previous birth experience invalidated her from a homebirth. They both choose to ignore the consequences of their actions of what could happened and it ended in the loss of two lives which was preventable. This was a tragedy on so many levels that should never of happened. There are laws for a reason.
Well unfortunately there are many women who think like this who would risk theirs and kids lives just to go through the “right of passage”(I.e Vaginal birth). As a mom who had 2 emergency C-section births it would horrify me to be in labor away from trained medical professionals or within an earshot of an OR. 😢
SO jordan was a nurse and she did not know anything? the woman lived three hours away and showed up after six hours. perhaps that should have been taken as a clue.
Was thinking same. Husband should've said, "Midwife not arriving timely, you're going to hospital, period." You just know he is kicking himself ever since. Devastating. What a harsh lesson to learn from. 😪
The mother was a nurse? She should have known she couldn't have a natural birth especially at home with only a midwife to attend to her. No emergency plans and no research, that was fatal. Sorry for your loss.

It sounds like all 3 adults played a part in this tragedy and should accept responsibility. 1. Wife should've known better as a nurse herself that she was at risk and should never do a home birth after C-section. 2. Husband should've called 911. 3. The midwife clearly has a pattern of irresponsible behavior. Unfortunately State licensing boards are slow to revoke medical licenses, even if someone is convicted of a crime! It's outrageous
I was a labor and delivery nurse and NO WAY would I even consider planning for home delivery. So much can suddenly go wrong. Unless it's an emergency, plan to deliver in a proper medical setting.
I am still in practice as a labor and delivery doula and will not do home births, if that's what the parents want they're going to have to find themselves a doula who does because this one right here doesn't. I will move heaven and earth to leave you feeling empowered by your birth experience but you only have to run a mom with a prolapsed cord down the hallways to the OR once to know that that sometimes you only have minutes and that seconds count enough that they can mean the difference between a live birth or a birth so compromised it results in the loss of the baby's life. Tears and regret can't bring the dead back to life.
I am heartbroken for her children. As a nurse, and 3rd time mom, she knew the risks. But those poor babies had no idea of the risk she was taking and have now lost their mom.

The initial domino is the tragedy IMHO was the mother, with her medical background AND previous birthing history, even considering a home birth. Second domino, IMHO, mid wife even taking her as a patient. Third domino, IMHO, dad thinking all was good with her "color" and giving " honey" for blue lips instead of when he first sensed something was not right and mid wife had not shown up loading her up in the car sooner and getting to the hospital or calling an ambulance. The mid wife, IMHO, even with all the complaints against her etc was not totally at fault here. It all began with the mother, with her medical knowledge and previous birth history, even considering this in the first place. SO very very sad. My heart breaks for her children she left behind when it possibly could have been avoided.

I let my doctor decide how to remove my remove my gall bladder and stitch me up. Gosh people are goofy. I feel so terrible. At the end of the day, home births have risks and you need to be prepared for the outcome of not having doctors close by. There is always outliers.
This is true, but hospital births are also risky, and statistically much more so than home births. I almost died myself from a mismanaged hospital birth. The truth is that birth itself is risky. Doing research into your provider is essential. Not blaming the woman who died, but the information was actually there, and her own medical history should have also been thoroughly discussed. Always meet with multiple providers, and check the state board for complaints! They are a matter of public record.
Hospital births are pretty risky too. These headlines just give people the liberty to say, "see I told you so, just go to the hospital". The truth is that women and babies die everyday even with the hospital interventions. In my opinion, going to the hospital would be a less safe option for me going forward because they almost killed my baby the first time.

When did they start allowing vaginal births after previous c sections?? I had c sections with all of my children and it was understood after the first one, the following children would all have to be c sections. It was never even considered to try a vaginal birth because the risks were too high. One of those risks.. uterine rupture with internal bleeding which is sadly, what took this mother and child's life.
That’s why birth centres attached to hospitals are better. You get a comfortable midwife led birth in privacy but they can wheel you to the maternity ward if you require medical intervention.

Nurse practitioner was definitely negligent, but it sounds like even the RN patient did not even realize that she should not have a homebirth after a C-section and a blood transfusion?? It almost sounds like they wanted a homebirth no matter what. This is so very sad.

I had 7 homebirths but my midwives always followed my and baby's health closely throughout pregnancy and birth. Plus the midwife has hospital priveleges and had me registered ashes of time, in case of unforeseen need to transfer. They also had emergency medical equipment in case- such as oxygen, injections to stop bleeding, etc. My midwives also ensured I knew that if anything stays from normal then it's all immediate transfer and I always lived close to a hospital. I'm very grateful for my amazing midwives and my homebirth s!

It’s always unfortunate regardless. I had a beautiful home birth and about to have another. My sister had two home births after a c-section. There are lots of wonderful, skilled midwives out there, along with some bad. Kinda like there are also some good and some horrific doctors.
I think this mom being a nurse was well aware of the risks and was advised against this. It looks like she really wanted to experience a " natural birth" and did what she could to get this experience. I know a lot of midvives wouldnt take her on as a patient due to her previous C-section and blood transfusion and the risk involved so maybe this midwife was the only one who decided to take her on. So unfortunate. Healthy baby and healthy mom should be the ultimate birth plan.
As a baby nurse herself, wouldn’t she know about not doing home birth after c section and blood transfusion?! These trendy moms wanting to do these dangerous things are delusional. The kids paid the ultimate price, one deceased and 2 others without a mom. Hopefully this guys next wife won’t be so hard headed and have his child in a hospital setting….I wish him happiness and the best of luck in life.

That’s why as a NICU RN I would please please advice to deliver in the hospital. Too many complications in a matter of seconds the babies life and mom’s life could change.
A mother should absolutely already know that having a natural birth after 2 caesareans is dangerous. Also, why did you hire a midwife 250 miles away? You saw your wife turning blue, and you DIDN'T call 911? And then you just drove her to the hospital instead of an ambulance? I am so sorry for your loss. As an L&D RN for 30 years, ACOG encourages VBACs, as the overall risks are lower than a c-section, as long as everyone is healthy and there are no health issues which would rule out vaginal birth. We have a lot of VBACs in our large hospital. The issue was the inattentive midwife.
This happens in hospitals as well. Let's not forget that fact. I've always believed that we have been given the gift of Medical Aid in hospitals that we should be utilizing. Remember how many women died at childbirth in homes when they didn't have hospitals to go to.

That 12 pounds baby story is crazy. That woman definitely had gestational diabetes, which means she should not have had a home birth. And for the baby to get to that point, that woman likely did not work with doctors to control her blood sugars. This was a failure at the prenatal and birth stages. Also, a *4th degree tear?!* Ouch! That means a tear all the way through the muscle, merging the vagina and anus into one orifice. How did she get through that without medication?! 😢
they didn’t mention until the end that she previously had a C-section. there is definitely more of a risk of uterine rupture if you have already and a c-section. thats why many people get repeat c-sections…thats not the case for everyone…but it seems legally whatever state she is in doesn’t allow for home births if you have had a c-sections. I don’t think home births are more risky if you are healthy and have no risk factors. There are babies, and mothers who die in hospital all the time. birth is just inherently risky…but the midwife should have definitely been following the laws of her state…plus the lady who had an 11 pound baby? did she have gestational diabetes? was she not checked for that? why was the baby not measured before birth? many mistakes made. I wrote all that to say I have had all of my kids at home and nothing bad happened. and I know many many hundreds of women who have as well…I just think its important to consider the risk factors and know the signs of distress and not ignore them. Thats what a midwife is for and she failed in that.
The mother's fundal height was likely taken before birth at every prenatal appointment, but third trimester ultrasounds are notorious for being inaccurate when diagnosing or determining the baby's size. Some women just make larger babies and it many times has nothing to do with gestational diabetes. This makes me wonder if the midwife was making the mother do purple pushing or yanked the baby out of her body, all of which could have led to such serious tearing. Most women have successful VBACs and most women who have uterine ruptures survive as well as their babies, but the signs of it were ignored in this woman's case.

Especially one that lost so many babies. There were 3 angels I saw out of maybe 30 names. That's 10%! The hospital I had our Cub at has a lower maternal/neonatal fatality rate. I'm gonna venture a guess that's also true for the hospital she worked at.
It doesn't necessarily. Many women have successful vbacs at home. High risk women need special monitoring and may not always be the best candidates for a homebirth. Home birth isn't for everyone and both home birth and hospital births come with risks. Most midwives won't take clients more than an hour away unless they have no other access to care, such as in rural communities. The midwife was too far away. The husband should have transported her to the hospital when she was in distress. There is a time and a place for home births. They happen more than you may think. Their birth plan wasn't working. Sounds like these people were trying to force things to go a certain way because they wanted a certain experience when they should have changed course and dealt with the situation at hand differently. This situation was messy and it's unfortunate that that was the outcome. There are some amazing midwives out there serving their communities. I don't know what this midwife was thinking and I'm saddened that none of them had the sense to transport her. The many midwives that I have known would have refused this client and if they attended her birth, they would have have been camped at her house with multiple assistants with oxygen and other emergency staples ready to transport immediately if things started to go in the wrong direction.

I have had three homebirths and live in AZ. Homebirths are wonderful and safe for routine, healthy labors and can be done with VBACs but my understanding is that uterine rupture is a very well known risk after c section and therefore the midwife should have recognized these signs. I remember my midwife telling me for my first birth, "my job is to know what normal looks like, if something starts looking NOT normal, we are going to the hospital". All of my midwives (I've had a different one for each birth) have been highly attentive, attune, and not too proud to transfer out when needed.
The level of pure cluelessness from that midwife is horrifying. She made mistakes and clearly didn't learn from them. The state is right to revoke her license. She gives all midwives a bad name - home birth with properly trained midwives is statistically one of the safest birth experiences. My heart is with this family, as well as all of her former patients who suffered from her ineptitude.
That husband only talks about HIS wife and HIS baby, what about the 2 children she already had that are now orphans? Everyone could have done a better job at using common sense. You pay a videographer but wait until the last second to call an ambulance? Knowing you live out in the middle of nowhere, smh.
Home births sound so nice but this is why I never had one. I would never be able to forgive myself if something bad happened to my baby that could have been prevented by being in the hospital. Let alone die myself!!! Lots of women have safe home births, but I couldn’t chance it. Very sad story. So sorry for your losses😢
I completely agree with you. My grandmother (99 years old) had no choice but to give birth at home with a local midwife. She lost two twins in the process and 5 safely delivered. When I told her that home births were an option after finding out I was pregnant. She said no, because I have every single opportunity and privilege to give birth safely in a clean hospital with a fully equipped staff. Glad I did, my daughter tore a major artery. Shortly after her first cry, I lost consciousness because of the blood loss.
Nothing wrong with home births, this is not about that. This is about a midwife who ignored obvious signs and was clearly negligent. She needs more than a revoked license, she needs jail time. God bless the family and may they be lifted up and given strength during this time.
I don’t trust midwife’s after my first birth. The next two were born as home UNASSISTED. It was amazing. My husband and I know what we’re doing and we thank God every day for our three beautiful children.
I am completely and totally against home births. It is so, so dangerous and unnecessary. I had a very serious medical complication and being in the hospital saved me and my baby's life.

As a nurse who works with kids that are chronically ill and medically fragile...often from undiagnosed conditions and birth traumas. There is NO WAY I would ever suggest ANYONE have a home birth. NO ONE. I don't care if they live a acoss the street from a hospital. 3 min is all it takes for your baby to be brain damaged or you to hemorrhage. I'm sorry but this guy watched his wife turn white. He knew that wasnt normal. He saw her in previous childbirth situations and knew that wasnt normal. He should have called 911 immediately I cant believe she chose this knowing what happened last time. She was not a candidate for home birth.and she knew it. The midwife shouldn't have accepted her as a client. There is plenty of blame to go around on this one.
I used to work as a medical assistant at an OBGYN prior to going to nursing school. One patient wanted to have one of our doctors be a backup for the midwife. At one point the doctor said he did not agree with the patient and midwife and said they need to find someone else to be a backup. The patient was post-term and our doctor wanted her to be induced in the hospital. Instead she did the home birth with the midwife and the baby had meconium aspiration (post-term deliveries have an increased risk of this). Since there was no life saving equipment at her home, like there would be in a hospital, the baby died. I felt bad for the woman, but she was warned of the risk. I'm sure the midwife knew the risks, too, and they went through with it anyway. It was just a sad situation. I understand why some women would want a home birth with a midwife, but if a doctor tells you that you need to go to the hospital, you go. The midwife made mistakes that killed this woman and her baby, and definitely deserves to have her license revoked. However, as a nurse, the patient should've realized she was taking a huge risk having a VBAC at home. There's a small chance that uterine rupture will happen, but you could be the unlucky one it happens to. Personally I wouldn't take the chance. I'd like life-saving equipment nearby in case something goes terribly wrong. I feel bad for all involved. Unfortunately some bad decisions were made all around that led to bad consequences that they now have to live with.

There's "blame"all around. The RN nurse who made the decision to have a home birth after a c-section, the midwife who accepted the job and the husband for going along with this.
I don't understand why people try to have babies at home. There are so many complications that can happen with childbirth. There's a nurse that I used to work with that was caught stealing patience credit cards and going on vacation. That woman is now a doula delivering babies. It's really scary. You can try to have as natural a birth as possible but please just do it in a hospital
statistically it's safer. in the USA we have one of the highest maternal death rates IN the hospitals. pregnancy is not 100% risk free, especially giving birth. this idea that we need to fire the midwife, imagine if doctors in hospitals were fired every time a patient died? nobody would even care, it's too common. I don't mean to be crass, but unless this midwife did anything wrong (which I don't know yet) this idea to attack midwives in general is uncalled for.
@@chicbate thank you for stating that. Homebirth and hospital births come with risks. Homebirth is a good option for many mothers with a qualified midwife. This situation is tragic and may have been avoided if she was transferred. Sounds like they were adamant about sticking to the birth plan instead of changing direction when things weren't going the way they hoped it would. It's very sad and perhaps foolish, without knowing all the details.
@@r5014 sadly it may be a case of not planning ahead for what-ifs. I just don't want a story like this to reflect badly on all the midwives out there. And I don't blame women for not wanting their first memory of meeting their infant to be in some hospital room. It wasn't always how we did it for centuries. Given we have better healthcare now, we don't have enough close by hospitals across America. I worry about when things do go wrong because it's not so simple as getting to a hospital. I hope to learn more details.

Vbac or not, this is a totally incompetent "midwife". I've had 6 successful homebirths, my 1st midwife was the very 1st to become licensed in the USA, she attended 1k+ births, and the 1st thing a successful and COMPETENT midwife will tell you is that you will be transported asap should the need arise. They checked my vitals religiously. This woman must've been riding the waves and soaking in the "glory". No excuse.
My daughter had a traumatic delivery IN the hospital. She wouldn’t be here if I had tried a home delivery. The delivery nurse said just this after she was resuscitated. Why do people put their babies and themselves at risk? I will never understand it. RIP momma and baby, such a devastating loss.
This shouldn't be just on the midwife. This is where you need to have common sense as an adult. Father had none at this time which is very alarming. I'm so sorry for the family's losses.
Thats why home births are too risky. You have to travel/seeking help right then and there at the actual time of the crisis. Plus you are relying on one person, who does not have backup a shout away. So sad for such unbelievable loss for you and your remaining 2 little ones. Just devastating and how do you get your mind around it. The sheer arrogance of the midwife - one complaint against her and a half decent person would be doing a serious "inquest" of their own knowing lives could be at stake.
I agree this mid wife having all of these complaints.. well.. I hope the state does something. This is awful. We had planned for a home birth last year with our first child. After several hours of close monitoring, our midwife and my husband looked at me and said "nope, it's not happening, we need more help". I knew too. We drove to the hospital and our baby girl was born healthy and happy and we both had 0 complications. It's more important to have a healthy outcome than the type of experience you pictured. That being said, I'd probably consider a home birth again, but we'd make realistic decisions based on what we need to do.
Just got to a hospital, they can deal with problems and have more staff to help than at home. My grandmother was a nurse in maternity and said there was always people coming in from home in distress and they had to try and figure out, fix what was going on.
if you had two hospita births including a csection. no doctor would recommend a midwife . also if she is later 30s she is high risk. if you can just include the midwife at the hospital so you can experience the care of the hospital along with the care of midwife. im sorry for your double loss. rip baby and mama . please revoke her license. she is a callous practitioner. there should be a fetal heart monitor. and prenatal appts to know things are safe or not to progress
This happened to my midwife. My encounter whet fine. But later the same midwife had a bad outcome for mom and baby. She lost her license and the doctor she worked for also lost his.
I'll never get it... why wouldn't you have a midwife be there but as you have the baby at a hospital? You don't want a doctor intervening, fine, but have the baby at the hospital so if something goes wrong your lives can be saved. Speaking from experience here! Had I not been in the hands of doctors I would've died from a uterine rupture. Through history the amount of women who passed from child birth is staggering. It's really sad, but at the same time I just don't get what's so appealing. No midwife can save you what if you're uterus ruptures? Aortic dissection? There's just so many things can go wrong to mom and baby. These states should crackdown on these midwives on a power trip. I blame them for allowing this type of thing in the first place! If you want to deliver babies go to medical school and become an o.b. or a peds doctor if you want to work with babies.
This is so horrible. RIP. As a former L&D nurse this is heartbreaking. Many people do not know that a "CPM" aka "lay midwife" (this midwife) is not the same as a "CNM" Certified Nurse Midwife. These lay midwives are not even NURSES! Had this patient sought out proper prenatal care she would have been advised to deliver in a hospital. Yes, there are many successful home births, but what you don't hear about as often are the home births gone wrong. This is so sad!

A previous c-section AND a blood transfusion and the mother, being a nurse, studying to be a mid wife, wanted to have a home birth so that when she became a mid wife knew what the parents would go through, CHOSE to have a home birth??? With her medical background and labor/delivery history SHE CHOSE THIS?? Seriously, a nurse, studying to be a mid wife who had a previous c-section AND a blood transfusion chose to have a home birth??? THAT alone, IMHO the mother, I would hope would have KNOWN or at least been concerned about attempting a home birth especially with her medical knowledge. The certified mid wife IMHO should have never even attempted it. MANY screw ups in this situation from, IMHO, the mother and the mid wife. Why in the world would a nurse who was studying to be a mid wife even take the chance of having a home birth after a previous c section and blood transfusion? Would she, after finishing her study and becoming a certified mid wife, do exactly like this certified mid wife did and allow other mothers with this type of birthing history to have a home birth?? I am glad the state is stepping in and hopefully pulling the mid wives license. I am sorry both mother and son's life were lost in the tragic situation. I have no medical background, but this mother did, there is no way no how I would have even considered a home birth after previously having a c section let alone a blood transfusion... I remember when they would not allow a vaginal birth after you had previously had a c section.. THERE IS A REASON FOR THAT... this is a prime example of it.. uterine rupture (possibly from previous c section incision??) with internal bleeding along with many other things. When did they start allowing a vaginal birth after a c section?? I had c sections with all of my children and it was understood after the first one, the following children would all have to be c sections. It was never even considered to try a vaginal birth because the risks were too high. Why did the dad not get her help sooner when he saw/felt things were not right here? The perfect storm, sadly, fell upon this poor family. I am so sorry for your loss. Hopefully your story will put s spotlight on home births after c sections etc. This is sooo sooo sad. A lot of fault is in the husband. He waited too long to get her help. Way too long. And I know rupture hurts like hell. How they went so long like that…
By no means I’m I defending what this mother did was right I wouldn’t attempt a home birth after having a C-section. I don’t know how old your children are but now a lot of women opt for VBAC ( Vaginal Birth After C- Section) I’ve had 2 natural births after my first was born by C-section. My children are now 35, 33, and 30 years old.

They went for their doctors appointments and c sections dates were schedule. None of them were ever asked would you like to try to have a vaginal birth and quiet honestly, I am glad the discussion never came up.
Because in those situations, investigations are mandatorily held and it is frequently found that the medical staff did everything possible to prevent the death(s). There was absolutely no oversight in this case; so much more should have been done. They shouldn’t have even been attempting to deliver at home in the first place.

To be honest, they’re all partly at fault, though I of course feel bad for the deceased. The mom had the training to realize she was a bad candidate for home birth and waited WAY too long to give up on her plan and ask for an ambulance when the reg flags were clear, the midwife clearly had no clue what she was doing (honey for someone turning blue??) and was wildly irresponsible (how did it take her 6hrs to arrive when she lived 3hrs away?), and the dad’s lack of medical knowledge doesn’t excuse his lack of common sense. His wife was obviously losing the battle and he waited until the very last minute to even try to get her to a doctor. The couple’s children played no part in this disaster and are suffering the loss of a parent.
I pray for this family! But for someone that was training to becoming a OB nurse and eventually a midwife herself should she have seen the signs? With pervious c-sections wouldn’t she have been considered a high risk patient for a vaginal birth? And the midwife shouldn’t have taken her as a patient as obviously she’s not properly trained. She should have turned her away and referred her to a trained ob-gyn trained on vaginal birth after c-section. Ultimately it was her (midwife) blatant negligent that took the mom’s and baby life’s.

My doctor refused to do a natural birth after I had a previous C - section. It’s very dangerous. Women can lose a lot of blood after birth. Because your uterus tears and dr’s can’t tell unless you’re in a hospital. Condolences to the family.
I had Two V-backs after a C-section. But it was in the hospital under my doctors care and Nurses constantly with me. A home birth after a C-section would be so risky. The mid-wife should have Never agreed to that. Especially with her training, she should have known.

I think it’s difficult when someone doesn’t have medical training is told by someone that HAS had training and has experience with this, coupled with the mindset of people believing with childbirth that “the body knows what to do”, they trust the person with the experience and lord only knows what else she might’ve said on the phone the he in hindsight is embarrassed about.
Moreover, the pain that poor woman experienced probably went back to the thinking of my body “knows” what to do and thinks contractions are THAT bad…. Who knows. My heart goes out to the family.

There is a midwife here on UA-cam (I forget her name) African American woman, who has done many AHB after c-sections and they were all successful. 🤷♀️ This midwife (Or was she a doula?) seems like she knows her stuff extremely well. I’ve seen her have to call the ambulance a few times too, but I’d rather her do that than to end up with mom and babe deceased. 🙏

I live in a small town. The closest hospitals are 40 to 50 minutes away. My friend tried to hire a midwife who lives 30 minutes away but she advised against a home birth, she told her that if anything went wrong she felt even a 30 minute ambulance ride to the hospital could be fatal.

Growing up in Africa, my parents had me and my siblings at home with the help of a midwife, because the next available hospital was hours away and not accessible. Why in America, anybody wants to have a home birth is beyond me. You have the privilege of access to a hospital equipped with professionals and life saving measures.
People usually want to have a home birth because they are comfortable in their home and/or uncomfortable at the hospital. Some people just see hospitals as bad places

I let the surgeon decide how he is going to remove my gall bladder. Call me crazy. People are goofy. Then for the years the kids are little and moms are all together talking they can sing their own praises about no drugs during birth, how they told their midwife exactly what their birth plan was and it went off perfectly. No one cares. Few people have control over such things. As if they are better people for not needing a c section, or feeling the pain or not needing forceps. Doctors don’t know what they are doing. Why don’t they know about birthing babies? If their spouse was having a heart attack or their kid a seizure they would take them to ER call 911 and let the doctors be without micromanaging them.

Unfortunately some people have terrible experiences in hospitals. I’ve heard countless stories of nurses and doctors not listening to pregnant patients complaints just because they feel they know better than the patient. Women have died giving birth all because the nurses and doctors refuse to listen to them, I’ve also seen new mothers complaining of long lasting pain from certain procedures done in hospitals (such as permanent back pains, and doctors cutting the patient even when it was completely unnecessary)

They say it’s safer. A few things about that. This midwife had 3 babies die in a year. She delivered 31. 10% of pregnancies resulted in death. There is probably some double counting here. The hospital if they ended up in hospital got credit for those deaths. 10% of babies don’t die in hospitals. Midwives are not supposed to take risk patients. She did take a risk patient. Did mom lie to her? So their stats would be lower than hospitals cause the midwife does not handle the risky patients. And risk does not mean mom will die if she has it. Just that is risky without the watching over and the interventions and monitors the midwife does not have with her in her car. Should she bother to make it there. This family was focused on the video and making a home birth work cause she wanted to midwife and felt it was necessary at any cost. Surely nothing would go wrong.
Ok let me understand this. A woman who should not have been practicing as a midwife was still working and a nurse who's previous birth experience invalidated her from a homebirth. They both choose to ignore the consequences of their actions of what could happened and it ended in the loss of two lives which was preventable. This was a tragedy on so many levels that should never of happened. There are laws for a reason.
Well unfortunately there are many women who think like this who would risk theirs and kids lives just to go through the “right of passage”(I.e Vaginal birth). As a mom who had 2 emergency C-section births it would horrify me to be in labor away from trained medical professionals or within an earshot of an OR. 😢

It sounds like all 3 adults played a part in this tragedy and should accept responsibility. 1. Wife should've known better as a nurse herself that she was at risk and should never do a home birth after C-section. 2. Husband should've called 911. 3. I was a labor and delivery nurse and NO WAY would I even consider planning for home delivery. So much can suddenly go wrong. Unless it's an emergency, plan to deliver in a proper medical setting.

I am still in practice as a labor and delivery doula and will not do home births, if that's what the parents want they're going to have to find themselves a doula who does because this one right here doesn't. I will move heaven and earth to leave you feeling empowered by your birth experience but you only have to run a mom with a prolapsed cord down the hallways to the OR once to know that that sometimes you only have minutes and that seconds count enough that they can mean the difference between a live birth or a birth so compromised it results in the loss of the baby's life. Tears and regret can't bring the dead back to life.

Third domino, IMHO, dad thinking all was good with her "color" and giving " honey" for blue lips instead of when he first sensed something was not right and mid wife had not shown up loading her up in the car sooner and getting to the hospital or calling an ambulance. The mid wife, IMHO, even with all the complaints against her etc was not totally at fault here. I feel so terrible. At the end of the day, home births have risks and you need to be prepared for the outcome of not having doctors close by. There is always outliers.
This is true, but hospital births are also risky, and statistically much more so than home births. I almost died myself from a mismanaged hospital birth. The truth is that birth itself is risky. Doing research into your provider is essential. Not blaming the woman who died, but the information was actually there, and her own medical history should have also been thoroughly discussed. Always meet with multiple providers, and check the state board for complaints! They are a matter of public record.
Hospital births are pretty risky too. These headlines just give people the liberty to say, "see I told you so, just go to the hospital". The truth is that women and babies die everyday even with the hospital interventions. In my opinion, going to the hospital would be a less safe option for me going forward because they almost killed my baby the first time.

That’s why birth centres attached to hospitals are better. You get a comfortable midwife led birth in privacy but they can wheel you to the maternity ward if you require medical intervention.

I had 7 homebirths but my midwives always followed my and baby's health closely throughout pregnancy and birth. Plus the midwife has hospital priveleges and had me registered ashes of time, in case of unforeseen need to transfer. They also had emergency medical equipment in case- such as oxygen, injections to stop bleeding, etc. My midwives also ensured I knew that if anything stays from normal then it's all immediate transfer and I always lived close to a hospital. I'm very grateful for my amazing midwives and my homebirth s!

It’s always unfortunate regardless. I had a beautiful home birth and about to have another. My sister had two home births after a c-section. There are lots of wonderful, skilled midwives out there, along with some bad. Kinda like there are also some good and some horrific doctors.

I think this mom being a nurse was well aware of the risks and was advised against this. It looks like she really wanted to experience a " natural birth" and did what she could to get this experience. I know a lot of midvives wouldnt take her on as a patient due to her previous C-section and blood transfusion and the risk involved so maybe this midwife was the only one who decided to take her on. So unfortunate. Healthy baby and healthy mom should be the ultimate birth plan.
As a baby nurse herself, wouldn’t she know about not doing home birth after c section and blood transfusion?! These trendy moms wanting to do these dangerous things are delusional. The kids paid the ultimate price, one deceased and 2 others without a mom. A mother should absolutely already know that having a natural birth after 2 caesareans is dangerous. Also, why did you hire a midwife 250 miles away? As an L&D RN for 30 years, ACOG encourages VBACs, as the overall risks are lower than a c-section, as long as everyone is healthy and there are no health issues which would rule out vaginal birth. We have a lot of VBACs in our large hospital. The issue was the inattentive midwife.
This happens in hospitals as well. Let's not forget that fact.
I've always believed that we have been given the gift of Medical Aid in hospitals that we should be utilizing. Remember how many women died at childbirth in homes when they didn't have hospitals to go to.

they didn’t mention until the end that she previously had a C-section. there is definitely more of a risk of uterine rupture if you have already and a c-section. thats why many people get repeat c-sections…thats not the case for everyone…but it seems legally whatever state she is in doesn’t allow for home births if you have had a c-sections. I don’t think home births are more risky if you are healthy and have no risk factors. There are babies, and mothers who die in hospital all the time. birth is just inherently risky…but the midwife should have definitely been following the laws of her state…plus the lady who had an 11 pound baby? did she have gestational diabetes? was she not checked for that? why was the baby not measured before birth? many mistakes made. I wrote all that to say I have had all of my kids at home and nothing bad happened. and I know many many hundreds of women who have as well…I just think its important to consider the risk factors and know the signs of distress and not ignore them. Thats what a midwife is for and she failed in that.
The mother's fundal height was likely taken before birth at every prenatal appointment, but third trimester ultrasounds are notorious for being inaccurate when diagnosing or determining the baby's size. Some women just make larger babies and it many times has nothing to do with gestational diabetes. This makes me wonder if the midwife was making the mother do purple pushing or yanked the baby out of her body, all of which could have led to such serious tearing. Most women have successful VBACs and most women who have uterine ruptures survive as well as their babies, but the signs of it were ignored in this woman's case.
I had a 10 pound baby and didn't have gestational diabetes. It happens. But when you get ultrasounds they are pretty accurate on the size and weight.

Especially one that lost so many babies. There were 3 angels I saw out of maybe 30 names. That's 10%! The hospital I had our Cub at has a lower maternal/neonatal fatality rate. I'm gonna venture a guess that's also true for the hospital she worked at.

It doesn't necessarily. Many women have successful vbacs at home. High risk women need special monitoring and may not always be the best candidates for a homebirth. Home birth isn't for everyone and both home birth and hospital births come with risks. Most midwives won't take clients more than an hour away unless they have no other access to care, such as in rural communities. The midwife was too far away. The husband should have transported her to the hospital when she was in distress. There is a time and a place for home births. They happen more than you may think. Their birth plan wasn't working. Sounds like these people were trying to force things to go a certain way because they wanted a certain experience when they should have changed course and dealt with the situation at hand differently. This situation was messy and it's unfortunate that that was the outcome. There are some amazing midwives out there serving their communities. I don't know what this midwife was thinking and I'm saddened that none of them had the sense to transport her. The many midwives that I have known would have refused this client and if they attended her birth, they would have have been camped at her house with multiple assistants with oxygen and other emergency staples ready to transport immediately if things started to go in the wrong direction.

I have had three homebirths and live in AZ. Homebirths are wonderful and safe for routine, healthy labors and can be done with VBACs but my understanding is that uterine rupture is a very well known risk after c section and therefore the midwife should have recognized these signs. I remember my midwife telling me for my first birth, "my job is to know what normal looks like, if something starts looking NOT normal, we are going to the hospital". All of my midwives (I've had a different one for each birth) have been highly attentive, attune, and not too proud to transfer out when needed.
Thank you!! We need these comments to balance out the ignorance against home births. The issue here is not that she went for a homebirth/VBAC.

The level of pure cluelessness from that midwife is horrifying. She made mistakes and clearly didn't learn from them. The state is right to revoke her license. She gives all midwives a bad name - home birth with properly trained midwives is statistically one of the safest birth experiences. My heart is with this family, as well as all of her former patients who suffered from her ineptitude.
That husband only talks about HIS wife and HIS baby, what about the 2 children she already had that are now orphans? Everyone could have done a better job at using common sense. You pay a videographer but wait until the last second to call an ambulance? Knowing you live out in the middle of nowhere, smh.
Home births sound so nice but this is why I never had one. I would never be able to forgive myself if something bad happened to my baby that could have been prevented by being in the hospital. Let alone die myself!!! Lots of women have safe home births, but I couldn’t chance it. Very sad story. So sorry for your losses😢
I completely agree with you. My grandmother (99 years old) had no choice but to give birth at home with a local midwife. She lost two twins in the process and 5 safely delivered. When I told her that home births were an option after finding out I was pregnant. She said no, because I have every single opportunity and privilege to give birth safely in a clean hospital with a fully equipped staff. Glad I did, my daughter tore a major artery. Shortly after her first cry, I lost consciousness because of the blood loss.
Nothing wrong with home births, this is not about that. This is about a midwife who ignored obvious signs and was clearly negligent. She needs more than a revoked license, she needs jail time. God bless the family and may they be lifted up and given strength during this time.
My condolences to the couple’s two children who are now without a mother. I hope they can get the emotional support they will need.

I don’t trust midwife’s after my first birth. The next two were born as home UNASSISTED. It was amazing. My husband and I know what we’re doing and we thank God every day for our three beautiful children.
I am completely and totally against home births. It is so, so dangerous and unnecessary. I had a very serious medical complication and being in the hospital saved me and my baby's life.
Exactly. I had unexpected preeclampsia and my baby and I wouldn’t have made it. I was a healthy woman in my 20s. Why take the risk?

As a nurse who works with kids that are chronically ill and medically fragile...often from undiagnosed conditions and birth traumas. There is NO WAY I would ever suggest ANYONE have a home birth. NO ONE. I don't care if they live a acoss the street from a hospital. 3 min is all it takes for your baby to be brain damaged or you to hemorrhage.

I used to work as a medical assistant at an OBGYN prior to going to nursing school. One patient wanted to have one of our doctors be a backup for the midwife. At one point the doctor said he did not agree with the patient and midwife and said they need to find someone else to be a backup. The patient was post-term and our doctor wanted her to be induced in the hospital. Instead she did the home birth with the midwife and the baby had meconium aspiration (post-term deliveries have an increased risk of this). Since there was no life saving equipment at her home, like there would be in a hospital, the baby died. I felt bad for the woman, but she was warned of the risk. I'm sure the midwife knew the risks, too, and they went through with it anyway. It was just a sad situation.
I understand why some women would want a home birth with a midwife, but if a doctor tells you that you need to go to the hospital, you go. The midwife made mistakes that killed this woman and her baby, and definitely deserves to have her license revoked. However, as a nurse, the patient should've realized she was taking a huge risk having a VBAC at home. There's a small chance that uterine rupture will happen, but you could be the unlucky one it happens to. Personally I wouldn't take the chance. I'd like life-saving equipment nearby in case something goes terribly wrong.
I feel bad for all involved. Unfortunately some bad decisions were made all around that led to bad consequences that they now have to live with.

There's "blame"all around. The RN nurse who made the decision to have a home birth after a c-section, the midwife who accepted the job and the husband for going along with this.
I don't understand why people try to have babies at home. There are so many complications that can happen with childbirth. There's a nurse that I used to work with that was caught stealing patience credit cards and going on vacation. That woman is now a doula delivering babies. It's really scary. You can try to have as natural a birth as possible but please just do it in a hospital
statistically it's safer. in the USA we have one of the highest maternal death rates IN the hospitals. pregnancy is not 100% risk free, especially giving birth. this idea that we need to fire the midwife, imagine if doctors in hospitals were fired every time a patient died? nobody would even care, it's too common. I don't mean to be crass, but unless this midwife did anything wrong (which I don't know yet) this idea to attack midwives in general is uncalled for.
@@chicbate thank you for stating that. Homebirth and hospital births come with risks. Homebirth is a good option for many mothers with a qualified midwife. This situation is tragic and may have been avoided if she was transferred. Sounds like they were adamant about sticking to the birth plan instead of changing direction when things weren't going the way they hoped it would. It's very sad and perhaps foolish, without knowing all the details.
@@r5014 sadly it may be a case of not planning ahead for what-ifs. I just don't want a story like this to reflect badly on all the midwives out there. And I don't blame women for not wanting their first memory of meeting their infant to be in some hospital room. It wasn't always how we did it for centuries. Given we have better healthcare now, we don't have enough close by hospitals across America. I worry about when things do go wrong because it's not so simple as getting to a hospital. I hope to learn more details.

Vbac or not, this is a totally incompetent "midwife". I've had 6 successful homebirths, my 1st midwife was the very 1st to become licensed in the USA, she attended 1k+ births, and the 1st thing a successful and COMPETENT midwife will tell you is that you will be transported asap should the need arise. They checked my vitals religiously. This woman must've been riding the waves and soaking in the "glory". No excuse.
My daughter had a traumatic delivery IN the hospital. She wouldn’t be here if I had tried a home delivery. The delivery nurse said just this after she was resuscitated. Why do people put their babies and themselves at risk? I will never understand it. RIP momma and baby, such a devastating loss.

This shouldn't be just on the midwife. This is where you need to have common sense as an adult. Father had none at this time which is very alarming. I'm so sorry for the family's losses.
Thats why home births are too risky. You have to travel/seeking help right then and there at the actual time of the crisis. Plus you are relying on one person, who does not have backup a shout away. So sad for such unbelievable loss for you and your remaining 2 little ones. Just devastating and how do you get your mind around it. The sheer arrogance of the midwife - one complaint against her and a half decent person would be doing a serious "inquest" of their own knowing lives could be at stake.
I agree this mid wife having all of these complaints.. well.. I hope the state does something. BUT, the mother, being a nurse and studying to be a mid wife, after having a previous c section and blood transfusion, thought a home birth was a good idea???? I have no medical background like this mother did and I would have never even considered it. Vaginal birth after c section use to not be allowed. What happened to that? There was a reason... possible uterine rupture with internal bleeding along with many other things. I had c sections with all of my children and it was understood after the first one, the following children would all have to be c sections. It was never even considered to try a vaginal birth because the risks were too high. I was told that if you had a previous c section the incision location could rupture if a vaginal birth was attempted. IMHO, the mid wife should have never even taken her as a patient and the mother having the medical back ground she had, even as far as studying to be a mid wife herself, I would hope would have known this was possibly a high risk. Sad situation for sure

This is awful. We had planned for a home birth last year with our first child. After several hours of close monitoring, our midwife and my husband looked at me and said "nope, it's not happening, we need more help". I knew too. We drove to the hospital and our baby girl was born healthy and happy and we both had 0 complications. It's more important to have a healthy outcome than the type of experience you pictured. That being said, I'd probably consider a home birth again, but we'd make realistic decisions based on what we need to do.
Just got to a hospital, they can deal with problems and have more staff to help than at home. My grandmother was a nurse in maternity and said there was always people coming in from home in distress and they had to try and figure out, fix what was going on.
Mind you, she would ONLY see the ones who tried birthing at home and became distressed. She wouldn't have seen the successful ones.

if you had two hospita births including a csection. no doctor would recommend a midwife . also if she is later 30s she is high risk. if you can just include the midwife at the hospital so you can experience the care of the hospital along with the care of midwife. im sorry for your double loss. rip baby and mama . please revoke her license. she is a callous practitioner. there should be a fetal

This happened to my midwife. My encounter whet fine. But later the same midwife had a bad outcome for mom and baby. She lost her license and the doctor she worked for also lost his.

I'll never get it... why wouldn't you have a midwife be there but as you have the baby at a hospital? You don't want a doctor intervening, fine, but have the baby at the hospital so if something goes wrong your lives can be saved. Speaking from experience here! Had I not been in the hands of doctors I would've died from a uterine rupture. Through history the amount of women who passed from child birth is staggering. It's really sad, but at the same time I just don't get what's so appealing. No midwife can save you what if you're uterus ruptures? Aortic dissection? There's just so many things can go wrong to mom and baby. These states should crackdown on these midwives on a power trip. I blame them for allowing this type of thing in the first place! If you want to deliver babies go to medical school and become an o.b. or a peds doctor if you want to work with babies.

This is so horrible. RIP. As a former L&D nurse this is heartbreaking. Many people do not know that a "CPM" aka "lay midwife" (this midwife) is not the same as a "CNM" Certified Nurse Midwife. These lay midwives are not even NURSES! Had this patient sought out proper prenatal care she would have been advised to deliver in a hospital. Yes, there are many successful home births, but what you don't hear about as often are the home births gone wrong. This is so sad!

A previous c-section AND a blood transfusion and the mother, being a nurse, studying to be a mid wife, wanted to have a home birth so that when she became a mid wife knew what the parents would go through, CHOSE to have a home birth??? With her medical background and labor/delivery history SHE CHOSE THIS?? Seriously, a nurse, studying to be a mid wife who had a previous c-section AND a blood transfusion chose to have a home birth??? THAT alone, IMHO the mother, I would hope would have KNOWN or at least been concerned about attempting a home birth especially with her medical knowledge. The certified mid wife IMHO should have never even attempted it. MANY screw ups in this situation from, IMHO, the mother and the mid wife. Why in the world would a nurse who was studying to be a mid wife even take the chance of having a home birth after a previous c section and blood transfusion? Would she, after finishing her study and becoming a certified mid wife, do exactly like this certified mid wife did and allow other mothers with this type of birthing history to have a home birth?? A lot of fault is in the husband. He waited too long to get her help. Way too long. And I know rupture hurts like hell. How they went so long like that…
By no means I’m I defending what this mother did was right I wouldn’t attempt a home birth after having a C-section. I don’t know how old your children are but now a lot of women opt for VBAC ( Vaginal Birth After C- Section) I’ve had 2 natural births after my first was born by C-section. My children are now 35, 33, and 30 years old.

They went for their doctors appointments and c sections dates were schedule. None of them were ever asked would you like to try to have a vaginal birth and quiet honestly, I am glad the discussion never came up.

The question we should be asking: How many hospital doctors get their license revoked when a woman/ and or baby dies in the hospital? None.
Because in those situations, investigations are mandatorily held and it is frequently found that the medical staff did everything possible to prevent the death(s). There was absolutely no oversight in this case; so much more should have been done. They shouldn’t have even been attempting to deliver at home in the first place.

To be honest, they’re all partly at fault, though I of course feel bad for the deceased. The mom had the training to realize she was a bad candidate for home birth and waited WAY too long to give up on her plan and ask for an ambulance when the reg flags were clear, the midwife clearly had no clue what she was doing (honey for someone turning blue??) and was wildly irresponsible (how did it take her 6hrs to arrive when she lived 3hrs away?), and the dad’s lack of medical knowledge doesn’t excuse his lack of common sense. His wife was obviously losing the battle and he waited until the very last minute to even try to get her to a doctor. The couple’s children played no part in this disaster and are suffering the loss of a parent.
I pray for this family! But for someone that was training to becoming a OB nurse and eventually a midwife herself should she have seen the signs? With pervious c-sections wouldn’t she have been considered a high risk patient for a vaginal birth? And the midwife shouldn’t have taken her as a patient as obviously she’s not properly trained. She should have turned her away and referred her to a trained ob-gyn trained on vaginal birth after c-section. Ultimately it was her (midwife) blatant negligent that took the mom’s and baby life’s.
