      Migrating from CentOS 7 to Ubuntu/RHEL9 is actually super easy. I was part of the team that did the migration couple months ago, and to be honest, it couldn't have been more breezy. We moved from CentOS7 to ubi9-minimal, and except the change in package manager, it wasn't much work.

      You do have to give them credit for the GNU coreutils like bash, tar, and all of the commands that run on top of the Linux kernel. Some of their more recent decisions have been questionable, but their early work is extremely important because Linux in its current form would not exist without Richard Stallman and his team (like Linus Toravlds said, a kernel by itself gets you nowhere).

      my dad's job as a civil servant actually started using FOSS alternatives to office 365 (at least word, excel and power point i think) about 10 years ago and they still use libre office to this day. Any government must secure support for any FOSS product they employ. The argument I keep making to the government's which provide services to me is that they are currently all supporting the economy of Washington State, whereas they could contract with a domestic support company, which means they would also get much of their support payments back as taxes.
      One big issue with M$Office Is that all large organizations have scripts and procedures which are tied to specific features and unique behaviour of M$Office. Dealing with that will require an upfront investment.
      The most annoying consequence of this addiction to Micro$oft is that when I tried to obtain forms from my provincial government, the government website refused to send the PDFs to my browser because it checked the response from the browser and found that I did not have Adobe Acrobat installed. I did not have it installed because Micro$oft used its financial clout to force Adobe to *eliminate* support for Linux.

    Apart from game conservation, there are other things like playing games with different form factors, controllers, and additional accessibility options (both of which Yuzu offered and Nintendo didn't). Hopefully at some point we'll get more legal protection for the emulators, so the developers have solid reasons to not be afraid.

      I don't play Nintendo games anymore. I had already been moving more and more to PC and then also the Steam Deck when it came out as that was more powerful than the Nintendo Switch by a HUGE margin, more open than any traditional console, and aligned well with my values as a Linux user and right to repair advocate (they partnered with iFixit for replacement parts). The Yuzu threats were the final straw in my nearly 20 years as a former Nintendo fan and one who had all of their consoles from the GameBoy Advance and GameCube (and the Nintendo 64 before it, which i got after the Wii released) up to and including the Switch. I certainly won't be getting the Switch's successor (almost all of the games that I could buy on the Switch are also on Steam or Epic Games and are better on PC / Steam Deck) and I have been encouraging other people to treat Nintendo the way the treat their fans, because they deserve to be treated like shit for this and the Etika Joy Con incident.

    @TheLinuxExperiment There are exceptions for the 10 years rule. For example, for medical data, this is 10 years rule after the person has been declared dead. If the patient is still alive, this is 20 years after the last visit to the health facility or practitioner, and if the patient was minor then and the 20 years period ends before their 28th birthday, the period is extended until the patient's 28th birthday. And data relating to blood transfusion is to be kept for 30 years. (A certain tainted blood scandal decades ago is probably involved.)
    For the 10 years after death, I guess this is because on one hand, a dead people's health data can still relevant to their living relatives diagnostics, and on the other it covers most scenarios where the person was declared death while their body is still missing (both to identify the body later or if they are still alive) or if there was misidentification of a body.

    Not just better training against social engineering, but better segmentation of the database. If every database is just one big blob, if it is breached it is game over. Instead of one big vault, make it 10 smaller vaults, that way when a breach happens, less people get affected.

    • @Chr0n0s38

    • @guss77
      @guss77 2 місяці тому +8

      If you have one system that needs access to the entire dataset (which is like 100% of all cases) then such segmentation does not make sense - it makes administration harder without providing any additional security - if you breach that one system, you have access to all data.
      You must remember that no one actually breaches databases - the database itself is always segregated and can't be directly accessed from the internet (unless your network admin is really dumb). All breaches are the attacker compromising an application that has access to the database.

    • @korakys
      @korakys 2 місяці тому +2

      @@guss77yes, I was confused the comment got so many upvotes. Intuition dictates you'd want to centralise databases as much as possible so you have fewer to protect.

    • @fakecubed
      @fakecubed 2 місяці тому

      The apps should themselves be segregated and the data those apps can access should only be the data absolutely necessary for that app to run. Why is name and contact data associated with pension data, for example? Each bit of information should be stored in separate databases accessed by different apps, and anonymizing tokens should be used for all of it. Associating data together may make an organization's jobs slightly easier, but it's a bad idea for data security. An attacker should have to compromise multiple apps to actually make any useful associations between data.

    You didn't really mention that the reason for the COSMIC delay is not that they are not progressing as fast as they thought, but rather they are progressing faster than anticipated. So they are delaying the release of the first alpha because they are skipping the planned first alpha entirely, and going for the second one which is supposed to include all of the apps. For this reason they need a bit more time for polish them.

    Different sources say: Build a minimum set of features that enable you to gather feedback from visionary early adopters. - Build only what is required.

I change WiFi card for a better one and it improved things a bit, but the range is still bad, especially with 2,4GHz networks which range seems to be half of what 5GHz is, which is the opposite to what should be or opposite to all other devices that correctly show twice the range on the 2,4GHz network. For me, the issue has more to do with the bad antennas.

      @michadybczak4862 I've got an Asus G513QE that had a mediatek wifi card, which I replaced with an intel AX210 (Wifi 6E) from framework - it got much better after that (this model seems to be notorious for wifi issues with the default card), but it's not perfect. WiFi would completely cease functioning if I had bluetooth enabled, SSH sessions would hang (though this could be some other factors), stuff like that.
      I'm not sure if this is part of it, but I also did get a whining noise when the dedicated (nvidia) GPU was in use - I looked it up and I think it had something to do with interference between the GPU and the wifi card, but I don't exactly remember the details.
      Also just in general bad wifi performance, reduced range, random dropouts, that sort of stuff. I haven't done extensive testing, mostly because I've got a FW16 preordered, but I still hope this fixes the issue since I'll be passing this laptop on to someone else.

    On the OpenAI thing:
    There should definitely be no way to reproduce an ENTIRE article just from a snippet. If that is actually possible, it would be no contest. Without that, it's the same failed argument everyone has against AI: no, it's not copying. Copyright is only for copies, and AI does not copy, it analyzes and stores aggregate statistics. What can happen is that an article is so specific that it's alone in the aggregation and can thus be recovered completely. We already have TONS of laws for that same use case when handling personal data and there's standard procedures to handle it. You just scrub all data below a threshold, ensuring it's an aggregate. Done, no copies. This is what they SHOULD be already doing. If they're not, then they are guilty.
    That said, one has to wonder: Are NYT articles so bad that they look a lot like AI generated fluff from the title?
    On the Yuzu thing:
    They were bundling keys and providing decryption methods, specifically going against DMCA. Sure, Nintendo's claims were far wider than that, but the bit they had them on was DMCA, the rest is to scare them.... but you never know and a bad ruling could set precedent which harms innocents. First step is not bundling secrets in the emulator nor providing access to them. Charging for access probably doesn't help the case, but I don't think that was the main problem. Clean room implementations will be fine, as they should.
    Also maybe keep projects targeting current gen in private? it's just not cool.

    Open source is OPEN.
    Now, if a company is going to make money USING open source code, the responsibility of security WILL fall on them and it should. I have NO problem with a large corporation having to ask themselves if they want to take the risk of open source or buy a software package that has requirements to be secure or develop their own. That SHOULD be on large corporations, most of which make hundreds of millions or billions of dollars in PROFIT each year. Yes, they can spend the money.
    Joe Blow in school making some software as a project and allows it to be open source should not for years have to make sure it's secure, or track every person who uses their OPEN SOURCE software and remind them to check for patches.
    I mean, that would mean many people would take software away from that type of licensing. Instead all they should be required to do is talk about how they maintain the software, if at all and warn people that there could be security risks with it.

    It's really funny that so few people try to emulate xbox consoles for so many various reasons. They do a lot wrong, but their overall commitment to game preservation combined with developer mode makes it so there's little motivation to emulate their stuff and little motivation to try to jailbreak it. They must make so much passive money from sales on decades old games that they have made compat with the new generation
    If the switch 2 had DLSS for going to 4K at a consistent framerate, and they put all the big hits from previous gens either on NSO or some version of a VC. There's gotta be so many more companies willing to work with them on licensing if it's just for an old game to be put on a storefront vs on their subscription service. There would be so much less of a push for pirating their games. Now they won't do ANY of that which will just lead a larger-than-average amount of people to pirate their stuff. Whether it be to get a consistent framerate or see the game in a decent resolution, or to play a game that's $200 on ebay and you have *no idea* if Nintendo will ever remake it or resell it.
    The decisions they make regarding their legacy content is what drives the emulation and they won't fix the root, just keep trying to attack the leaves and branches.

    I am very interested in the suit against OpenAI. I have highly suspicious about OpenAI (and CodePilot) because they most likely use copyrighted material to train their AI, without any compensation, acknowledgement or forwarding of the copyright notice. In case of Copyleft code, that would be a crime.

    You should talk about the Valorant native port for Linux code on Riot's website(?). It's probably boilerplate code but is also definitely good clickbait material lol

      Wait what?? Will this translate into my actually being able to play League on Linux again? I play via a maximally sandboxed proton setup but that will stop working when rito in a scant few weeks from now forces us to use that unethical and windoze-mandating vanguard abomination if we want to play league, which of course, I can't and won't do. I thought the only hope was darling (what WINE is to windows, darling is to MacOS) progressing to the point we can run the mac version sandboxed, which probably won't happen for like 5 years, considering darling's just barely reaching minimal graphical application support (let alone be able to run a graphics-intensive application like a video game and performantly, though Moore's law could eventually come into play)

    • @MH_VOID
      @MH_VOID 2 місяці тому

      @@cameronbosch1213 I mean, in the hypothetical scenario that I make more than enough money to build a dedicated and externally sandboxed Linux gaming rig, I might, just might, be willing to modprobe vanguard or whatever whilst I play league and shut down the PC immediately afterwards, treating the PC as always compromised, but IDK. Frankly, valorant is dogshit and always has been, and league has immensely gone to shit, and the game probably won't be fun at all by the time the aforementioned would come about. But yeah, no chance whatsoever of that shit being on any computer I use for anything besides pure gaming. I wouldn't even play in bubblewrapped proton for months because it wasn't secure enough

      @@MH_VOID Exactly. Not to mention which country owns the company who owns Riot Games. I wouldn't allow that on my computer unless the entire source code for Vanguard (the "anti-cheat" rootkit) was at least available and audited.
