ah yes i love ‘hugh sutton’ the musical as shown in their profile photo i made this comment before i saw kat say it also like, their poor understudies if they ever go on
I think what will blum had to say about this on his ig story the other day was pretty well put. If the actor's name is bigger than the show title you aren't selling a revival, you're selling a glorified cameo. Not to mention the point other people have brought up about how much shit the understudies for this are going to get from people who paid $400 to see hugh jackman. I don't bear any ill will against any of the cast and crew for the music man but I'm definitely confused and disappointed by a lot of the decisions being made by the people calling the shots here.
what i think is funny is that scott rudin reportedly said that he didn’t think beetlejuice would last because of no big names and no fan base and just think it would overall flop which is why he allowed music man to go in... MEANWHILE.... MOST OF THIS MARQUEE AND THEATER DESIGN JUST HAVE THE NAMES HUGH JACKMAN AND SUTTON FOSTER!! anyone else see some irony or something weird here. i ADORE sutton and i think hugh is very talented but this design isn’t sitting right
I adore the marquee but it was unnecessary to add the Ya Got Trouble and 76Trombones in those weird orange squares on the side. Also whenever there's a big name in the show, it'll usually be in very large letters along with the title (think, Bette Midler in Hello, Dolly!)
Fun fact for all Beetlejuice fans. I know that not a lot of people will see this, but Beetlejuice is going on a national tour in 2021. I was really sad until I found this out. The dates and citys have not been disclosed yet, I will comment the city’s as soon as I find out. Spread the word!
I was about to comment that Seth and Laura should take over when Hugh and Sutton leave. Ever since the BBC Proms when he sang Yah Got Trouble, I'm like this guy was born to play Harold Hill.
If I just glanced at the marquee I would think it’s for the revival of carousel based on the colours. I know they’re both old shows but since that revival was so popular you’d think they would want to make the colours distinct to the show.
this is literally the funniest video I’ve ever seen. like why did I laugh so hard watching Kay discuss drama about Wolverine and princess Fiona being on too much of the theatre??
I am super excited to see The Music Man in March for my first trip to NYC! I agree that the marquee is a little ridiculous with how busy it is, but it also kind of sets it apart from other shows with its style. Especially with it being such a classic, old show. I hope you do an Updated video soon. I heard there were lyric changes for some songs for the issue you addressed. And I also agree to give Sutton a chance for this role. She has had roles before that sang above the treble clef staff.
Hot Topic is pretty neat nowadays, despite their horrid aesthetic and cramped layout. They have tons of great merchandise from stuff like Disney, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Harry Potter, etc. It's awesome if you look past the oppressive atmosphere! Yeah, sure they have all your favorite chains and goth collars and stuff. But I honestly feel like that's pretty minimal nowadays compared to the rest of their stuff. They had a bomb-diggity Jasmine necklace from the live-action Aladdin, and they carry lots of jewelry in a similar vein! Okay, sorry, thought I'd put my two cents in. For the topic that wasn't even the main one. The "hot" topic, if you will.
To be fair, they are legally obliged to give the title of the show as "Meredith Willson's The Music Man." Every production has to. It's part of the licensing agreement to include his name.
It's a good day when Kat uploads! Also I'm applying to a school near LA and not going to lie I'm super pumped! I know that it seems very glitzy and that's just more so it's rep, but ahhhhhhhhhh I really want to go there!
I truly enjoyed Music Man. Hugh was great Sutton was BETTER! Whole cast, including kids, was fun. They seemed to enjoy what they were doing, and who wouldn't? The only small problem was the Winter Garden didn't have enough bartenders staffed for the intermission. Have no problem with marquee whatsoever,
hi Kat! I'm currently an advertising major in college and i brought this up with my professor after watching your video! basically how he explained it, The Music Man is such a classic show that it can survive on its own; the purpose of putting hugh jackman's name on it is because he has so many entirely different audiences (i.e. wolverine/marvel) and they hope that if these fans go to the show just to see him live, they might accidentally end up becoming interested in the show itself/musicals in general, then by word of mouth, The Music Man will start to gain a bigger audience. (similar to the effect Beetlejuice had with tiktok). And of course anyone who loves theatre loves Sutton, so even if they aren't the biggest fans of music man, they'll go to see sutton (ik i would). After all this, the goal is that even when the big names leave, the show will continue to have success! As for the cluttered billboard, rather than creating brand awareness, they are more sparking interest/confusion (it takes people a few times to actually make out what it's trying to say, making them look at it longer.) Also the ads in the time period of the show looked clutter like this so that's another effect they seemed to be going for. I'm so glad you made this video!! I love theatre and advertising and it was the perfect discussion for my advertising class!
Not to be a graphic design major on main but I think the marquee is pretty similar to most posters and signs from the period the show is set in. I highly recommend googling Victorian posters bc it's the most chaotic typography you will ever see. I do agree it's hard to read at a glace and if you weren't familiar with the show you probably would be confused about what it was for, they probably should have made the show name way bigger that the performers. It might have been intentional (I hope not bc oof it bad) but if I've learned one thing at college it's to claim you mistakes were purposeful during critique.
The colors are just a bit off for me. I understand that they maybe don’t want to use red again because it’ll look too much like Hello Dolly’s ads, but I would’ve at least used colors that resemble the classic marching band aesthetic
