I am so excited about what you are sharing. I want to be a world class jazz drummer by the time I'm 100, I can do this. I still have 27 years to make it happen. I appreciate all of your help and wonderful lessons. All the Best 😊
I love brushes. Years ago I played small jazz combo gigs with all brushes. I had to wing it and did ok on my own. I'm playing in a big band and we have two charts that require brushes. This lesson is gold.
These are all great patterns! Thanks for putting these together for us. I like to create funk & hip-hop patterns with brushes, where my hands sweep left-to-right across the head, in opposite directions (one above & one below) - RH = 1 &, LH = e a.
What i love about you mate is your passion for teaching. Great drummer with a great personality. You make me want to practice...thank you Quincy from Australia ❤
Oh, I especially love the Samba groove. It sounds so light and yet driving already without the feet. Great stuff! What I struggle with the most in my brush playing is comping while playing patterns. I don't want to fall into the trap of learning a bunch of patterns and then that's all I can play. It feels like I'm in a cage I can't break out of sometimes. The difficulty for me comes in at adding accents and smooth transitions to other phrases and stickings. And I haven't found a teacher yet that really moves beyond teaching patterns they like and use for different situations. Maybe you can make a video about your approach to that?
I have used a few of these over the years, but I wish I had more opportunities to utilize these types of skills more often. The groups I get to play with now are usually playing louder electric jazz/fusion. I love that stuff too, but would like some more chances to play some traditional jazz as well. Great lesson as always thanks! FP
THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN! The best brushes lesson around. I remember asking you about brush comping/fluency about a year ago and you responded! Thank you so much for getting round to it, this is exactly what I need to develop my brush playing to the next stage!🙏🙏🙏

This is gold! Thanks so much! I personally learned to sweep clockwise but I see so many of the greats actually sweep counter clockwise. Do you have a preference on sweeping in either direction? Thanks in advance
Really nice video lesson! I love playing brushes. I practice clockwise, I think there are some advantages (finger flick, fast feather) but on gigs I find myself playing counter clockwise…seems like I have a better feel counter clockwise…weird.
I love playing ith brushes! Studied with Alan Dawson from 1980-82, used to do his Ritual with brushes! Question, I am much more comfortable going clockwise in my left hand with my sweep. Does it matter whether you go clockwise or counter clockwise with pattern #1? If so, how come?
That’s awesome you studied with Alan Dawson! For Pattern #1, clockwise or counterclockwise is fine-it’s all about what feels natural. Many prefer counterclockwise for phrasing, but if clockwise works for you, go for it! Keep experimenting!
Im gonna get a new pair of brushes soon. My current pair of heritage brushes are all bent out of shape from years of gigs. I see you’re using a pair of heritage brushes, but what do you think about other types? I tried a pair of Steve Gad brushes (with a kink in all of the wires) and they were pretty cool. It was a long time ago so im gonna see if i can try them out in person again before i make a purchase but i thought id ask you about your thoughts on types of brushes Edit: the use case is for jazz, btw. Combo playing
For jazz combo playing, I personally like Regal Tip and Vater's basic rubber handle brushes with thin wires, similar to the VF Heritage brush. While thicker ply wires can be great for other styles, I find that thinner wires really swing and have the right feel for jazz. Those Steve Gadd brushes are cool, but if you're looking for that classic jazz sound, I’d stick with the thinner gauge. Cheers!
Hi Q ! I am Baba from Nicaragua... Many jazette drum kits like mine come with a 13' snare drum. Am i wrong or i always see jazzmen playing brushes on a 14'. So my question is ...a13' isn't it a bit too small to play confortably sweep paterns ? Thank you

Yeah this is great, Anthony Stanislavski is also great too imo!
I appreciate that very much Joe!
I love the simplicity in the patterns. It amounts to eloquence. Thanks Q!
I appreciate that Scottie! I definitely gravitate towards simple and meaningful over the other stuff.

That’s right, Ron. You tell them my man! Thanks for the watch🙏🏾
Love brushes great great lesson❤

That’s awesome! Nothing like the cool but nuanced sound of funky brushes. Cheers!
Thanks for the truly helpful and practical lesson! I wanted to see more on how to add accents while those patterns are played.
I think I go into that a bit more in other brush videos I've made. Thanks for watching!
What i love about you mate is your passion for teaching. Great drummer with a great personality. You make me want to practice...thank you Quincy from Australia ❤

My drum and many other jazz drummers snare drum is 14”. But you can play jazz brushes on a 13” for sure.
Yeeeehaaaa 🔥❤️🥁
Thanks!
