Power steering high pressure hose replacement - 2 to 4 hours.
This video will guide you through the process of replacing the high pressure power steering hose on a 6th generation Nissan Maxima. That should cover the 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 year models. Both ends of the house are visible from the bottom. One side just inside of the passengers front wheel, the other side goes into the rack on the drivers side. If you have small hands and arms, you can do this job without much frustration, however, if you have larger hands and arms, it will be quite a challenge.

Thanks again Robert DIY I took my pops and I about 3 hours with lunch. Taking the air cleaner off helped to see and maneuver the hose out and the most difficult part was bolting the top bracket as the space between the firewall made it tricky to get it on. Outside of that, my car and my pocket book really appreciated the DIY instruction. We owe you a beer!
Aldo Parenti Sweet. Glad you guys got it worked out.
Glad you found the video. The people on the Maxima forum were NOT helpful at all so I had to go at it in the dark. So many of them were so mean that I did not post a link to this on the site.
screw them! Thanks for showing this. My wheel was hardly turning. took it to firestone and they said I have a leak in the high pressure hose and wanted to charge me 1000 bucks for a new pump and hose.
Good for you & for us, Robert. Ive got a honda dealer i could say few things about. Thanks for the clarity of your Video. (at least semi -clarity)
Forums you can find a few good tidbits of info ,otherwise are fraught with smoke & mirror topics. Dealerships , are too busy with stuff beside advice for a customer .
Pep Boys was going to charge me $500+ in parts and labor for this. I'm fairly hand and change brakes, alternators, etc. and am really glad I found your video.
Chris Roe Good deal, thanks for watching.
Possibly the most comprehensive car part replacement video I have ever watched. Excellent visuals and commentary. Well done.
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative and detailed, thanks for putting this out here to help us maxima owners with leaky power steaking hoses that dont want to get gouged by shops!
You are welcome. Hope it goes easy for you.
Replaced my line today. After taking almost all day here is some tips that might work: Remove Airflow pipe that is connected to the air filter, remove the black hose connected to the engine by a clamp (radiator fluid), This gives you complete access to the power steering line bracket, and connection from above the car. Eliminating how much time you may have to spend under the car.
thanks for the tips.
Robert, I did the same job today. I did not watch this vidio until the job was complete. It is my opinion you did a fine job explaining every aspect of the procedures. I did the job on a Nissan Quest. The only difference between the two is that you cannot see or access the bracket holding the hose from above. Removing and reinstalling this bracket is next to impossible. Fortunately I am a slim man with long arms so this allowed me to get the parts out and back in. Thanks for what you are doing.
inrx8 Good deal. Glad you got it done.
If you are going to change your own P.S. hose, THIS is the video to watch. Two things I think will help is to understand the routing of this hose, and do a dry run to recognize the parts in the video. Simple but tedious after that. The routing of this hose is shaped like a roller coaster. From the 24mm bolt under the car it goes UP the back of the motor to the 12mm manifold bracket, then DOWN to the center/bottom bracket on the backside of the engine and then OVER to the drivers side steering box. You can only see it from under the car. Once you watch the video and get under the car it all makes sense.
Something else that makes this job a LOT easier is to remove the plastic/rubber intake boot that is clamped on between the air filter box and manifold. You can put your arm WAY down between the engine and firewall to access the hose brackets behind the engine. It makes seeing and routing the hose 100 percent easier too. Great video Robert.. Love the way you pronounce hose,,, "heouz"...
+Richard Westin lol, thanks for watching and sharing. 😂
Robert thank you for the very helpful information. It really saved me lots of $$$$. Thank you. I have only one thing that I believe would make this video even better, Using a screw driver as a pointer to point out exactly the bolts and or screws and or clamps to look for when proceeding. I enjoyed the video and it was very very helpful. Thank you once again and keep up the good work
thanks.
Thank you for this video! I was trying to help my neighbor for the last few hours and we just couldn't get it seated right. The tips on feeding it from the top, making sure the o ring is on the end piece that screws in, and that there is the washer/ gaskets that go on the opposite end on the passenger side where the tips that we were missing. We got it done record time thanks again.
You are welcome.
Thanks for the tips and for watching.
Thank you sir for taking the time and explaining every detail. It is help like this that saves Americans hundreds or thousands
Thanks for watching.
This is really helpful. Thanks for taking the time to put this video together!
gmhummerh2 Thank you for watching.
Thank You for the huge time saving information short & to the point. Great upload Robert
you are welcome.
Yeah thanks partner! it was the residue that had settled all over the place all seems Good now! thank you for sharing.
+jimbola77 you are welcome
this video is a massive help one you study the car and figure out where everything is
Thanks for watching
@@RobertDIY i did it the lazy way without putting the brackett and it loosened it self near the rack and pinion 😅 my bad
Nissan wanted to charge me $250 for labor + another $250 for the hose. Your video will save me the labor and I found an aftermarket hose for $140 with a lifetime warranty. good day indeed.
+Solidus Prime Happy birthday. ;)
I found one for 69.99
Solidus Prime $59 + shipping @ rockauto.com
Robert, I have a 2005 Quest, the set-up looks very similar only less room to work. I'm sure it is going to be a real PITA. I would like to thank you for making this video, it really helps knowing what you are going to be getting into before you start. I have always thought about making these types of videos but it seems like I never have the time or the patients, and again I don't know how G rated it would be either. If I notice anything different doing a 2005 Quest I will report back.
Again SUPER job on the video and many thanks!
+John Owens LOL, thanks for watching. Please do let me know how it goes.
Did you ever do this hose replacement? I need to do mine now, any tips would be appreciated,
Great Job Robert. Appreciate the detail and was able to complete quicker because of your video.
Good deal. Thanks for watching.
Glad I found this I'm attempting this job tomorrow! Thanks for the info sir!
thanks for watching.
Excellent video...very helpful! Thanks for sharing knowledge.
Thanks for watching.
Another tip: I used a RUBBER BAND to hold the bolt and washers on the banjo. After getting the bolt and washer on banjo, wrap a rubber band around the bolt and the metal stud. This held the washer in place and allowed me to manipulate the hose enough to get the nut in place and hand threaded. I spent a good amount of time trying to get the bolt seeded with the washer using only one hand with access from underneath the car. As soon as I used the rubber band it only took a few minutes.
hmmm
Robert. Thanks for these postings. You are very clear and descriptive for everything from the tools to the process. Wish you had a Nissan Quest though as apparently Nissan made some changes one engine to the other. My husband is trying to do a replacement of the High pressure Power steering hose.
+Sheryl Adair VanVleck Yea, they bury those things. So sad.
You are very good at what you do and your videos are great and full of the information needed
Glad you think so!
Your Tutorial Really helped!!! Im saving 600 bucks by doing it myself. Maximas have very limited working space.
Batman Gotham Good deal. Glad you found the video.
Batman were you able to do it just like his video w/out taking out the wiper assembly?
Chris Roe Yea, it's pretty hard, considering that I have huge hands. Take your time and follow his video thoroughly.
Thanks! Just enough info to steer me in the right direction. Job done.
+jdgarrett2 thanks for watching.
Yes that is to much. I believe my friend ended up getting his line for something like $45 or $65. The retail cost was about $115. You can get a new hose from the dealer, a new hose from an after market store, or you can also remove the hose and have it rebuild at a hydraulic shop.
My opinion is that it is always best to get the OEM hose. However, at the rate they are failing, there may be better options. You can check other dealers around the country, they will ship the part to you.
Your the freaking man.. I don't think i'm doing this one doe...
Thanks for the message. Small hands help.
Thanks for making this video! Have a Merry Christmas!
Same to you!
Thank You! I found it helpful.
+Ronald Craft thanks for watching.
Once you get the level right the bubbles should go away with just a little bit of use. You may have a damaged pump or rack.
It may be the pump they sold you. Does the steering feel bad or is it only the noise?
I just did this work with the help of this video (2002 Nissan Altima 3.5). It took 4+ hours. I did the driver's side from the top (remove the rubber air intake from the air filter to the exhaust manifold), the passenger side from the bottom and wheel well. Getting the old hose out, sliding the new hose in (from the driver's side top), and reconnecting the driver's side wasn't that bad. Reconnecting the passenger side of the hose SUCKED, however. I left the old top bracket attached to the exhaust manifold because the old 10mm bolt attaching the hose was missing, but the new 10mm bolt/screw to reattach to the bracket was damn near impossible to get in and tighten. Also, the new hose would just NOT line up with the power steering pump connection (with the 24mm bolt) while trying to hold two copper washers in place - all with one hand. Getting both of your hands in there is impossible. (It took two right hands - my son helped out).
More tips from my rookie experience: 1) Have a 17mm wrench on hand to separate the pressure sensor from the hose AFTER you pull the old hose out (forget about disconnecting it in that tight space). 2) Don't try this job without a really long, snake-like funnel ready for the passenger side. Regular funnels can't get into the tight spaces and the fluid runs everywhere. 3) Get a good metric ratchet wrench set for tight spaced jobs like this one. A long 10mm (and perhaps a 24mm?) ratchet wrench would've been really helpful. 4) Have a helper to give you a 2nd right hand on hand? :)
Very nice, thanks for watching and sharing your tips.
Good. Keep the fluid topped off.
great video wish I could see how some things where done but all in all great video
Thanks for watching.
thanks to your video I'm aware and in need of a 24mm before starting this project. Thanks RobertyDIY
+Cliffton Jones thanks for watching.
+Robert DIY did my job yesterday. my replacement didn't use either one of the factory brackets. which was the most aggravating thing about the whole process anyhow. I secured the replacement hose with zip ties. no issues on day 1
That should hold up fine.
Nice job, thank you for the thorough presentation!
You are welcome. When I needed to replace this line, I could NOT find any help at all. The guys over on the Maxima forum were jerks about telling me anything about it. I think they didn't know but instead of saying that they were simply mean.
Glad it helped, the one I swapped in has worked well so far.
No, it will bleed itself real fast. Just check the fluid level after you drive it a little.
Thank you for that great information Ready two handle that job
+L Park good deal
Excellent video. Thank you.
you are welcome.
Excellent video thank you for sharing!!!!!
You are welcome.
Having spent a fair amount of time under the car and limited to only using one hand due to space limitations I am wondering if the entire project can be completed from above the car. Instead of putting the car on ramps, access to the banjo might be easier by just jacking the passenger side up, and removing the tire. This may give the necessary room needed to work with both hands and the needed space for the wrench or socket.
Let me know.
There could be a problem with the pump or rack. If you were running it low it may have been damaged.
i would say this video is not for beginners that don't know vehicle components etc but its good info if you got some experience
+Free Spirit thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this - it's been very helpful! (I'm part way through right now) I'm having a heck of a time getting at the bracket you talk about at 4:22. The new hose has a new bracket, so it would be nice if I could get the whole thing out, but my hands are quite big which is making things tough...
Christian Poynter Yes, the designers care nothing about the mechanics on those cars.
Robert DIY any transverse mounted V6 is a horrible, horrible experience. To do almost anything it seems removing the engine is the best first step.
The easiest ps pressure hose you'll ever replace is on a Chevy pickup...having said that, imports with rack and pinion steering is always a challenge, dang hose starts at the pump and travels back to the rack...once I opened the hood and couldn't even see the hose, I knew I was in for a challenge....good video just the same, I'll take off the intake hose as one commentor suggested and see what this hose is about that has radiator fluid running thur it that you didn't remove.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks you.. This is very helpful..
You are welcome
Thanks Cleveland!
You're welcome Skeeter.
Very helpful! Thank you!
+lildavidjax nunya you are welcome
Robert, does the end that goes onto the power steering pump get two copper washers.? One on the pump side and one under the bolt head?
I have no idea. Whatever I showed in my video.
I'm in an 06 Maxima sl. I have a leaking problem, but I noticed in the reservoir on the bottom right third of the cup, there is a tiny space like it separated. I didn't know if that was just a little strainer kind of thing so nothing harmful gets in or if that was actually broken. It wasn't leaking too bad. I would go through maybe a quarter every week and a half, but starting today I had to fill it up twice! Any info you have would be great. Maybe if you could look in your reservoir and such? I'd appreciate it, but great video. If it is indeed the high pressure hose, then I will definitely use this video as a guide. Thanks again.
If it is the power steering system leaking I'd say it is the high pressure hose. Also, any leak that consumes over a quart per month is bad.
Actually the lack of fluid does. If you run it with low fluid level, it can and will damage the rack, then it gets real expensive.
Any tips for getting off that 24mm? I tried from the passenger side near the wheel well and can get a socket onto it, but no room to turn anywhere. And i dont have a air ratchet
+Stuart Follett If not in that video, I don't know.
+Stuart Follett Extensions, flex joints, and long breaker bar. Did it recently on my Infiniti
How much does take to get my new power Steering hose to put it on my 2002 Maxima?. James Moses Jr
I have no idea.
Ok thanks
Thank you! I truly appreciate what you are doing!
***** Thanks for watching.
Hi Robert, great video, congrats. I have one question for you. How many e-psf bottle(s) to replace entire fluid for steering wheel?
I have no idea.
Sure, thanks man
H.P.P.S.Hose: I need to change my hi pressure hose going to the P.S. Pump 00 Camry Solara. I am sure you have changed one. Did you remove the hose by pulling it up through the top? Was there any thing to move or anything that hindered you from pulling the hose through the top?
ua-cam.com/video/tVYUe_atbWs/v-deo.html
I replaced one line on my Nissan Maxima. That was a very difficult job.
I couldn’t get my hands in there. Such a very close space. I did all that only to see it still leaks from the other hose.
I almost wonder if it would be easier to pull the engine.
Ouch!
No, same place I got the hose I used.
Seems all I need is a bit of patience for this diy fix. I'll be spending a few hours doing this today. I'll keep my tablet handy for reference. I did see another video where the tech showed where it was leaking on that high pressure hose. Out of curiosity, was it leaking from the crimp under the heat shroud? Great video Robert. Thank you!
Aldo Parenti Man, that was yesterday, I don't remember. They usually leak from the crimp seam. Always the high pressure hose.
Robert DIY This would be the 3rd such leak right around the 110,000 mile mark. I have two friends where that's where it leaked and coincidentally, it looks like mine is leaking from there also. I'm glad I caught it before my driveway paid the price.
Thank you very much
+Solidus Prime Thank you for watching.
My O-ring kit came with two washers and two O-rings a big one and a small one but my original banjo bolt only had two washers on it no ring. So does my 05 Altima not need a oring on the banjo bolt? And also out of the two o rings I got in the kit, which goes on the driver side end? Or do both?
I have no idea.
It would help if u told about how long it took you to do the job.hut i liked it .keep up the good job
I did, in the description area. Did you look there?
Good job 👍
Thanks for watching
I can put everything where it needs to go but I can seem to tighten the 14 mm line into the steering rack I can get it tight but not tight enough where it won't leak and all I can fit in there is a 14mm wrench is there some other tool or something i can use to get it more tight
If the video doesn't help, you may need to have it towed to a garage to finish it.
I have the same problem on 2002 Nissan Maxima. James Moses Jr
ouch
very helpfull thank you.
you are welcome.
Good job bro thank you
You are welcome
Hey robert I'm having to much trouble with the 14mm trying to loosen I got it loose but still hasn't come out
Man, my time estimate on that job is between 2 - 4 hours. Take a deep breath and keep on hacking away at it.
thanks
You are welcome.
do I have to put the bottom screw in first because I'm having problems I did the driver side first
+Tyrone Williams Please watch again. I do not remember.
I have a 2009 Nissan Altima 2.5 s coupe and everyone is tells me my power steering pump is out. It makes a loud vacuum noise kind of , it does effect my car it passed smog and everything I just really hate that noise. My steering wheel is not stiff at all but when I turn my wheel left or right the noise get liter or stops , I want to know if you could help me out is you think it's the pump or hose because the steering on the car is fine
+Jamaal Storay if the fluid level is good, I'd say the pump is bad.
Naaah I just decided to wait another day and start over. thanks for asking
+big kev OK.
hey robert i did this job myslef thx for the info, i had one problem tho, i couldn't figure out how to get that rubber gromnet with the metail hook back on the line at the bottom, it seems fine without it, is it a big deal ? should i get help to put it back on?
I usually put stuff back the way it's suppose to go. I think it is there to avoid the line from rubbing other things. If you do NOT get it back on, make sure you check the line from time to time to make sure it is not moving or rubbing anything.
Robert DIY ok thanks, im going to have my brother help me this weekend to put it on, i need some one from the bottom to hold in place well i screw it in from up top, it was an aftermarket line from (edman) i think thats why i had trouble, but thanks for you post your a lifer saver :)
Thanks. I had a hard time finding any instructions on doing this and the shops want a pretty penny for it.
Where did you buy the part every where I go doesn’t have the part or the hose doesn’t curve how it’s supposed too

Hello Robert, quick question just wondering hoow long did the project to change the hose took you?
Steve DeLeon In the about comments in the video it said 3 hours. If you know what you are doing, likely 2 hours or less. If you don't know what you are doing, as I did NOT, longer. It should not take you 4 hours.
Robert DIY great thanks for the time to response back. Keep up the great work!
You are welcome. Hope it works out well for you.
Coming soon a clearly understanding video. So you won't be wondering what is this no more... Peace from M.I.A..
would you like a refund?
Great videi. Very helpful
Thank you for watching.
Hey. How long did that process take? start to finish
i replace mines but for used hose, but after replace tge steering feels little hard/heavy and when start the car and turn the stereing to the left or right feels a little vibration and noise sound (only the first time) then dissapears.
any recomendation?
No, drive it a little and make sure the level is good.
Nissan wull charge between $650-$750 depending your engine. I have a 3.5 Altima and it was over $700.
Ouch! Thanks for sharing.
Alright , my power steering fluid on my 2005 Altima is real low, the auto parts guy says that dexron 3 atf will work. Do you know if this is correct?
Owners manual.
yes Dexron lll / Mercon ATF fluid that's what i've been using for my leak. till i'm able to get the high pressure hose changed. this is a known problem for most all 04- 80 maxima models , and dealership knows about it and will not do a recall on it !!
extremely useful video I like and sub

I AM HAVING A FIT WITH TRYING TO REPAIR A LEAKING POWER STEERING HOSE ON MY 2007 NISSAN MAXIMA
-- HAVE NO LUCK STOPPING LEAK -- COULD THE LEAK BE COMING FROM THE PUMP ITSELF -- PLEASE RESPOND ASAP! PAUL
+oba paul Roberson where is it coming from?
Seems to be coming from high pressure like, or higher above...
Likely the hose. You will have to replace it.
I got the same car what type of fluid you use? Thanks
Please check the owners manual.
I have a problems with my Nissan Altima 2007. I HAD A LEAK on the pressures hose and we put a new one on. but now it take 30 mines. before the noise to stop. And we did not put the bracket back on the hose . Can you tell me what is wrong plz.
+Leonard Curry Is the level good?
Yea it is
Why is it that i have to wait 30 minutes to an hour before it stops whining? All the levels of the power steering are good. Do you have any ideas of what it could be?
Probably a bad pump.
HI, I HAVE A 2004 NISSAN MAXIMA AND ITS LEAKING BAD POWER STEERING FLUID..IS IT THE HIGH PRESSURE HOSE? I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT CARS LOL
Chances are your high pressure hose is leaking. Very common Maxima problem.
Robert DIY ok thank you
Ok but will this leaking hose cause my stiffness in my steering.
If the level is low.
@@RobertDIY thx
Where did you purchase the hose
I don't remember. Probably AutoZone.
The bolt on 2:50 which way does it spin in order to get it out, bcuz im spinning mine to the left and it is tight as hell it wont come out
Carlos Angeles All of the bolts turn in the normal direction. If one way doesn't get it out, go the other way.
Carlos Angeles Clockwise is normally tight, counter clockwise is loose.
Robert DIY okay thank you ima try some kroil hopefully that works and a cheater bar
Hope it works out.
It worked thanks alot man
Is this the same replacement in a 2001 Infiniti i30
Dana Watkins I do not know. It can't be much different.
How long does this process take
+Gregg Sanders notes in the comments section.
Robert DIY
should I replace the return also???
Nope.
Are you near the SF Bay area? I have 2005 nissan quest with powers streering leak and need help. I can pay cash located in Concord Ca.
I am today.
i just found out that my high pressure power steering line needs to be replaced. They say its going to be $687 not even including labor. Does that seem too much? Bcuz i just looked on ebay and a new line is only about $100
How much are they from the dealer?
well i didnt buy the manufactor high pressure hose and ps pump. i got the duralast version from autozone. could this be an issue?
not immediately.
It was pretty bad. I think they did NOT know how to do it and instead of admitting that they didn't know how to do it, they gave me a hard time.
I had my steering pump and high pressure line hose replaced on an 08 maxima now its making a groaning nouse idle and turning. The lines are tight, fluid is fine, and everything so why is his noise be
worn pump, likely from running it low.
