17 years as an American vegetarian here - It's gotten a lot easier in that time because of cultural shifts, but in the early days I mostly just went without. I don't recommend, and would've done it differently if I cared about my health at 14
I also went to Colmar with my boyfriend this January! (I live in southern Germany, so it´s not that far) It was soo beautiful but finding vegetarian things to eat was a struggle I had to - I went with a veggie burger in an Irish Pub ^^ Also fun fact about the Bretzel: there are several towns in Germany who claim the Bretzel originated there and there´s a whole tale behind it. It goes something like this: A baker was senteced to death but as he had been a great baker, the duke gave him three days to bake "a cake through which the sun may shine three times". On the third day his wife crossed his arms in desperation and inspired the baker to form the Bretzel. Just as he finished baking the Bretzel, a cat accidentaly threw the Bretzel into a bucket of lye and there we have the Bretzel we know today. There´s a whole celebration around this tale where I went to school haha
I’ve always wanted to go to Colmar and Strassburg because of Howl’s Moving Castle and I don’t envy your plane journey, I’m so lucky to live in Scotland, would barely take me a couple of hours flight. Thanks for the itinerary advice 😅 Happy holidays to you and your future family ❤️ Also, in Europe, mostly all milk products are pasteurised, there are some farmer markets that do the milk unpasteurised but 99% of the time it will be pasteurised.
