I had the pleasure of taking Civil War and Reconstruction with Dr. Robertson at Virginia Tech. Thank you for the recommendations.
Keep the blessings coming Dr. Harrelson, thank you for part one, two and any future parts to your book list. it is Father’s Day weekend 2024 so happy Father’s Day to you! God bless
Thank you for taking time to give your recommendations on books of this topic. As a Carolinian, a Southerner and the 7th Generation of living on the same farm for all these generations, as well as having family fought in every war from the Revolutionary war. I am proud of my history and my heritage and love reading about it!
I do love these recommendations. Growing into my Catholicism also saw me grow in my appreciation of the South once it more feudal originals were pointed out to me. And I am a firm believer that if we ever see a uniquely American Integralism, the idea the Church is a fundamental part of society and its governance, it will more than likely come from the South. And it will come when she realizes where her constitution, and I mean that in more general sense, came from. For I see the South in many ways as an offshoot of Merry England. Hopefully one day the Cavalier will get the better of the Roundhead, both here, in the Mother Country, and the Empire at large.
Love the book recommendations. I grew up with a set of great grandparents being around until I started high school and a grandfather who was an avid genealogist and history buff. Wish my dad and his brothers would have kept my grandfathers library versus selling everything at his passing. Seeing your shelves in the back bring back a lot of memories. Your recommendations are sending me down a new trail of discovery. Which is much appreciated as I gave a very diverse appetite for reading.
May this series have many episodes; I’ve enjoyed it immensely!
I am looking forward to reading Ben Robertson's memoirs
Southern Culture feels to me (a Midwesterner) like the only real America left. The last vestige that hasn't been McDonaldized and strip-mall-ified into the generic corporate America soup.
You’re so right. Waffle House is way more authentically American than McDonald’s. Lol
Sadly it's fading
Maybe not “mcdonaldized” but is being faded out after years of ill treatment that has affected our youth such as to feel shame for their heritage. It is sad to see.
As a Black Man born raised and currently living in the South I can confirm that dueled edged sword of a blessing.
That the South might be considered "real America" is an interesting opinion. I love for you to flesh that opinion out a bit, please?
I have only today stumbled across your channel. I am Southern Appalachian by blood but was born and raised in the lowlands of the Deep South. I am very proud of my heritage and homeland and have found this video to be a delight. I intend to go back to watch the first part to see which books you suggest there and look forward to more of your content about our history and culture. Thank you.
I look forward to part III. As a semi-derancinated Southerner, which is true of many contemporary Southerners, this series is helping me reconnect with our people and our culture.
Finally. A couple books available on audible and one was free for me! I now have 4 of your 9 recommended books and a reading plan for the summer
Thank you for sharing this information with us. I really appreciate it. I'm hoping to add these to my collection as well if I can find them. We need more people to stand up and defend the southern heritage and history.
I love this content! Please continue!!! No one is teaching us our history. I'm a millennial and from Texas. No one teaches us our true history. We will receive Texas history more or less unvarnished but not southern history. I'm from Ft. Worth, and you are the first person to tell me about BRADFORD?!?! Thank you for this series.
I am captivated by your recommendations and brief explanations as to why.
I really appreciate the good work you’re doing here Dr. Harrelson. The South deserves more than so called “historians” and “experts” painting her in a negative light.
Very good, please keep the series going. Thank you.
As a cradle Catholic and born and bred Southerner I’m very interested in southern Catholic history. Do you have any interest in this topic?
I love the series, Doctor Harrelson. I find myself pausing each video, searching to see if my local library carries the book you mentioned. Red hills and cotton was available So I’m adding it to my reading list.
I would love to hear more of your thoughts on the history of the south and how we as southerners might go about preserving our wonderful culture for our progeny’s benefit
More videos like this please. I'm a supporter of the Abbeville Institute and I crave things like this. I have all of those books but the last one .
By all means, do continue to educate. Do not allow the provocations of the foolish dissuade you from speaking truth through knowledge. God bless you sir. Proverbs 8:5 "O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart."
I love hearing you talk about the South. It’s so great to hear good things about her. I grew up in the South. I live in DC now. I miss the South.
Please continue with this topic sir!
Dr. Harrelson, as an avid lover of Southern History and a classically trained Historian, I wonder how you approach the historical narrative of the Lost Cause as it relates to alternative historical treatments of the American South. This video seems like a paean of the South? Fell in love with your content at the intersection of pipes and Catholicism.
I also wonder what his treatment of the “Lost Cause” is. I tend to sympathize with it myself, though that’s largely from reading the thoughts of the generals after the war.
Your comments on VMI and Stonewall tell a tragic tale of the current state of political correctness
Thank you for adding to my reading list.
Please keep them coming. Only wish I had heard of these the past 40 plus years.
I know I keep saying this, but I look forward to parts III, IV, and V.
I'm enjoying your book lists. Keep'em coming.
I am enjoying these videos on the American South. God bless Dixie!
Thank you for this content! Ive been starving for this exact type of info.
Thanks Dr. Harrelson! I enjoy your videos on history of the South, especially through the eyes of faith and truth! I agree, it’s important we know our true history. I moved to Louisiana decades ago and I’m always amazed how rich our Catholic history is because it’s begins before the country was founded here in Louisiana. For instance, the Ursuline Sisters and the
Redemptorists priests helped the different European immigrants who came through the port of New Orleans. Also General Andrew Jackson won the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 with the help of Our Lady of Prompt Succor as the nuns and towns people were encouraged to pray to her because they were sorely outnumbered by the British. Hope you come to Louisiana if you haven’t already to enjoy the rich history of the South! Keep up the good fight! Finally, welcome to the Catholic Faith! I hope you have discovered the Traditional Latin Mass as well. It’s very beautiful and “ historically “ accurate! It’s the “Mass of the Ages.” Pax Christi 🙏👑❤️
Yes..I want to hear more!!I love reading about the south!!!!
Love Robertson's Jackson bio. Was thinking about taking it up for another read on vacation this summer.
Absolutely, more!
Thank you sir, you have a new student.
Very interesting content. From a Canadian perspective It's interesting to learn more about the south and the American civil war since it had significant impacts on Canadian confederation and the division of powers within the British North America Act. The south may have been trying to defend itself locally but the impact was international and those international impacts still play a role today. Again thanks for your wonderful content.
It would be extremely beneficial Culturaly for Our South to have its Independence again.
Just discovered your channel and am thrilled to be a new subscriber. I'm also anxious to watch part III of this series. Very best to you!
More of this, please.
Thanks. Very interesting.
Very well done
Nice 'outfit' this Yankee sure does enjoy learning from you. Please keep teaching.
"Don’t call what your wearing an outfit. Don’t ever say your car is broke.
Don’t worry about losing your accent, a Southern Man tells better jokes." - Drive-by Truckers
You have me intrigued, ordered 4 used books you have suggested from part 1&2 plus Bradfords book, I am a yankee from Illinois and Love the South, warm inviting culture ( no pun indented ) Sidenote, I did enjoy Robert Bourke's book slouching toward Gomorrah..
Thank you for preserving a part of the past that has been the main target for historical revision aficionados. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. That's the kind of history I cherish. Against much resistance I yearn to learn more.
This channel is great and the information much needed! Keep the videos coming!!
These videos are always a blessing, keep it up Dr. Harrelson
I lived in Louisiana for a short time and it made a huge impact on me. It helped straighten out the "Southern hospitality"/"racists southerners" paradox in my mind.
Enjoy the content and the book recommendations!
Thanks for sharing out this content.
I grew up in Fredericksburg, VA, in the late 70s and early 80s. I severely miss the South I grew up in. I've known all along that the South, our current society, tries to demonize isn't a true and fair representation. I've learned a lot from you guys who put the true story out there, and I greatly appreciate it. I just found your channel, but I've been listening to the lectures and podcasts of Brion McClanahan, Donald Livingston, and the Abbeville Institute for some years now. Please continue to spread the truth, Good Sir.
Fredericksburg is the new mason dixon line, well maybe Culpeper
Fredericksburg is a progressive wasteland nowadays. The Mason Dixon line, in my opinion, would start around southern Spotsylvania County
@@paulie6709 Roger that. I live in Richmond and I also have cousins in Fredericksburg. I'm a descendant of George Rowe who had one of the old homes on Hanover St. Culpeper feels less saturated.
Great insite to our southern heritage , thanks from old New Orleans 😇🇫🇷 🇩🇪🏴☠️
Great stuff. Keep it coming.
I’ve always loved history, and I’ve always loved the South, though I am from the West. I always have considered myself a Southerner in disposition. I look forward in to being able to work through the books you recommend here and elsewhere. I just purchased Shelby Foote’s narrative of the War Between the States largely under your influence. Keep up the good work and don’t be too put off by negativity. You wouldn’t be doing something worthwhile if it didn’t make you some enemies.
A good friend of mine is originally from California and moved to Alabama after finishing law school in LA (Louisiana, not Los Angeles !). He, like you, is most definitely a Southerner in disposition and has now established firm roots in small town Alabama. If you've never been to this part of the U.S., I highly encourage it.
Another Great video on Southern History and Tradition. The US lost a great deal during and after the war of northern aggression
More please
More to add to my list. Thank you Dr. Harrelson. I appreciate everything you do. God bless ya.
Awesome! Love it!
Thank you for your recommendations. I look forward to some excellent history lessons from you. I have just started the book J.E.B. Stuart: The Last Cavalier.
When you say that you would not give a dime for any book published on Southern History written in the last 10 years, you mean to tell me that you would not purchase Alan Guelzo's book on Robert E. Lee? LOL
I used to play the bagpipes at J.E.B Stuarts birthplace, lived in the town named after him, met his descendants etc. a lot of people there know very little of "old handsome"...
Could you do a video on Tom Sawyer and other such southerners? I always love your insight good sir
Born and raised in central MO. Family of both sides of the civil war. But,,,, the agrarian stuff you talk about and people connected to a piece of land I understand. Love your stuff.
Please keep up the wonderful work on these videos Dr. Harrelson!
I have three of the books on your list, with the exception of the Genovese book, I was fortunate to purchase a signed copy of the Robertson book at the Stonewall Jackson house in Lexington, VA. I am saddened to here what VMI did I was fortunate to visit while he was still venerated, have they removed his bullet torn uniform jacket?
I'd definitely love to see more book recommendations, please keep them coming.
Thank you, Dr Harrelson.
Appreciate the reccomendations and learning more truth about the south.
Please keep making these, they are very valuable
Thanks for the recommendations! I’ve had Red Hills and Cotton on my list for a while now, I guess it’s time to pull the trigger on it.
I just formed a new reading list! Thanks so much.
Enjoy your video. I am looking forward to many more on the same topic. Ron
It is nothing new that the "winners" of a war or other conflict re-writes the history to suit their future agenda.
The problem being ofc that all the roots people have to the nation gets eroded because they live a lie.
I am no american, but i realy appreciate your sharing of southern history/culture and philosphy.
It is fascinating so thank you.
I don't understand why academia and intellectual society wants only the newest material, when most of it is junk propaganda.
It doesn't mean the older material doesn't have tendency to be as such yet, overall, the quality of material is far greater. In some instances, even the binding and paper is better made.
That stated if a book is left to elements and dust it will definitely deteriorate.
Thank you!
Excellent topic and podcast! Keep 'èm coming! I'm thoroughly enjoying them and looking forward to reading some of these books.
Thank you for listing the books!
I would think that books closer to the time the events happened are essential if you are doing historical research. I always try to go as far back as possible and get to the original documents, get to the source.
Surely those who were there, those who witnessed the events, have something worthwhile to say.
For example, if we are researching the Civil War, surely we should rather read Grant and Sherman's memoirs, rather than some recent work. And yes, I know those are two Northern gentlemen that must be notorious in the South, but the same goes for all the great Southern leaders.
Please keep these videos coming! So far, the only books you've mentioned that really grabbed me were _Albion's Seed_ and _Cracker Culture,_ but it's always good to have as a source someone who knows the best books to read on a subject. I'm more interested in Appalachia (a place that neither North nor South wants to claim), but if my interest ever turns more southerly, I know which books to start investigating first.
Always interested in a reading list.
Thank you for your book recommendations. Have you ever read a book by Winston Groom “Vicksburg 1863” I just recently purchased this book but have not started reading it yet. I would like to know your thoughts.
I love this series of the old south.
I have purchased red hills and cotton and look forward to reading it thanks for recommending it 😂
I really enjoy your videos from one Yankee in Pennsylvania. God Bless you, your family, and the South. 🙏🏻
Question: If the South could be an independent nation tomorrow would you support it?
P.S. I’m not a Fed, don’t worry. This is a genuine question.
This is my lifes goal! I beleive my Southland and its Culture to be so worth saving that I see it a necessity. Sececcion does not have to equal War. I am not Dr. Harrelson but I am a Son of this Southern Soil and I cannot exist outside of it.
@@brandonloyd8852 Well good luck. 👍 I don’t know about secession, but I do believe the national should be transformed into 13 decentralized autonomous regions, which themselves are broken down into states and then counties. One of these regions would be Dixie.
Im a 12th generation Virginian
I’m not sure it is that the people in the South are trying to remove our history as much as the busybodies won’t stop screaming until they get their way. And unfortunately, people give in to them to get them to stop. But most normal people I’ve talked to, north or south, think the statue removals and name changes are non-sense, regardless of historical views (and indeed most people don’t have many historical views to speak of). Only anecdotal though, I may just not have spoken to enough crazies yet.
I enjoy your content very much.
However, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen you respond to a single comment on either channel.
Perhaps I’m wrong and you have.
But I’m sure an occasional reply from you on a select comment or two per video would be appreciated by your subscribers.
What separates UA-cam from network TV, and makes it unique, is the interaction between the host presenters and viewers.
I’m subscribed to many channels that have hundreds of thousands of subscribers and they make a point to reply to at least a few comments on each of their videos.
I don’t say this because I comment often and never get a response.
In fact, quite the opposite.
I don’t comment often because I don’t see you respond to anyone and so it seems a bit pointless.
Just an observation.
I will continue to watch regardless.
But I would like to see you interact with the people that support you.
Thank you for your content.
Have a great weekend.
Excellent and very true !!!
