I am changing the look of my front garden...

  • Gardeners have to deal with changes all the time. Sometimes we like it, sometimes we want our plants to behave like furniture in the living room: we move it in, and there it stays! Gardens always change, shrubs grow, trees mature, plants die.. The cycle of life. In this video, I am removing one lilac, which blocks the view from my pretty house flowers, and drastically trimming down the other shrub. Happy gardening!

You were very brave in taking down those overgrown shrubs, but That's exactly what was needed! Your front door is welcoming and inviting now! What do you think of putting some kind of statuary or a beautiful birdbath in that space and then plant around that? An urn on a pedestal could be planted for the different seasons and decorated with pine bows and pumpkins for holidays. Just a few ideas running through my head.

Olga, you're very brave! What a magnificent improvement! Now I would consider reducing the size of the yews by about 50% and perhaps reshaping the tall one into a more narrow conical shape, or even a topiary with 3 balls. I think the current large size of the yews is overpowering and drawing the focus away from your beautiful painted designs which are such a unique and lovely feature. Everything else should compliment them and your beautiful obelisk, not detract. I absolutely love what you've done in opening up that space and can't wait to see what you do with it next.

Wow, you made some quick work of trimming your shrubs. Looks so wonderful! I removed my white lilac last year because it was just too large for the fence. I saved a piece and replanted and now it's getting very large. I think they like being cut back. I like how you painted flowers on each side of your windows and your green door. I enjoy seeing all of your videos.

Hello Olga, I think you were wright, it looks much more balanced and clear now. If you’re brainstorming about what to plant in your “jewel box”, I’ve experienced some plants that can cope with dry shade although people don’t always think about them: my Rosemary blooms in a shady spot and never receives water. Hellebores are also good at this, and surprisingly Oriental lilies also accept a fair amount of shade. If you want to keep it low, creeping thyme may work, and short or medium allium bulbs too… good luck with this new space, hope to see the result soon 😉

Well done. The sedums are great, do the chelsea chop on them next year in may. First you will have a lot of cuttings and they don’t fall apart. Maybe you combine them with your perennials at the walkway. Repeat the plants is always a good idea to make the appearance cohesive. If you like you can put up an urn with a pedestal. Or create a knotgarden, with iberis or small taxus, lavender if it is sunny enough.

Olga this is so inspiring! We have a few very overgrown shrubs that were inherited with the house and I've always just thought that I need to leave them be or just keep on top of pruning them, even though they really don't fit the space. My advice is to plan something small size there next year maybe some loving shade flowers like superb coral bells they could give you a punch a color in front of the house.
Or maybe some shade tolerating decorative grasses, some look superb like silvers or purples and flowy in the wind , making a contrast on you beautiful yew. Also would cover the stump fast because grasses grow fast.
The view is fantastic now after you cut down those unruly shrubs. Good job on your courage to do such a big decision.

Olga, I love the way you imagine your space, and I've bookmarked your videos on pruning roses. A couple of comments on this video. Taking out the lilac was brilliant. If you want to kill the roots without damaging anything around it, rub Round-Up CONCENTRATE all over the freshly-cut surface. It will seep down and kill the root, and you'll never see another shoot come out. Also, you might consider taking out the quince and putting in one of the smaller hybrid forsythias which will give you bloom at the same time as the quince but be easier to maintain a smaller shape. Best of all, the bright yellow blooms will pack a lot of visual impact. To manage a forsythia's height, remove a third of the canes from the ground level every year. Since it blooms on new wood, selectively removing old stems not only keeps the height manageable, it also increases bloom volume.

I guess you have to decide if you want it to be one way or the other. Pull those lilacs roots and that other shrubbery that you pruned. Sometimes if you have a logging chain you can fasten it to those roots and pull the shrubs ouy clean with a lawn tractor or ball hitch on a truck.

Amazing!! Sedums do well with road salt-I have several varieties by my mailbox just for that reason. The large tall evergreen to the left of the front door if it was gone it would really open it up and I feel give more focus to the yews in front you are training to have the balls on top as well as your front door. Also could you bring in more annabelle hydrangeas and plant them where the queen of swedens and boxwoods are to fill that space in under your windows and continue with the same variety to create a group for good focal interest? It’s so gratifying opening up a space.

In time we see our garden grows & flaws come out! Garden design! Its something I've seen the landscapers draw on paper and colour in flowers to show or see how it will look. I have been thinking of doing this myself in the future. It takes quite a visionary gift otherwise to see how each plant actually looks in the future with changes going on through growth & that alters the sun. So much to think about. Your a brave woman, cutting the way forth❤

Geraniums (species), hostas, heuchera, ferns, bleeding heart, columbine (reseeds easily), Hellebore... woodland plants that are used to competing with tree roots and canopy. Have fun doing your research!
