    After all that, how much has it cost in terms of your time plus gas to render the brass down to create a 1kg ingot.

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  6 років тому +1

      In gas about $5 and all the stuffing around I recon 2 hours to melt and clean . It’s certainly not worth your time and effort but there’s a lot of satisfaction to had when I see what it was to what it has become 👍🏻. Definitely not worth doing if you’re a scrapper but I keep everything I make and all my ingots will be used in future casting projects👍🏻. In my new furnace I could easily melt down 7-8 kilos of brass in 15 minutes👍🏻

    hey bigstackd casting, what do you suggest for materials for a foundry to make, old propane canister like what you did, or using a big metal barrel for it?

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  6 років тому +1

      It really depends on how big you want to go with your crucible. They say only have a chamber a little bit bigger than your largest crucible as thatll use the heat more efficiently. It certainly wouldn't hurt to start smaller and get your head around everything involved and then if your still interested and want to go bigger than you always can. My little BBQ gas bottle furnace i use is perfect and the chamber size can still fit an 8KG crucible ,ive only ever used really a 6kg and ill never need to go much bigger with what i do so why not start with something like mine (Although im hoping to fix up my beer keg furnace very soon,the chamber is pretty much the same size but it definitely looks alot cooler than what im currently using.) If you ever decide to build one do aheap of research on UA-cam and if you ever need a link to where i got my burner or the dimensions of my chamber so you have a reference to work with let me know🤘😀

    • @bigstackD

      Only tarnishing I ever get is on the copper , it’ll start to loose its shine a few days later. The brass always stays shiny but gets very dusty. My friends suggested I spray some clear lacquer on the copper to keep it from tarnishing so I’ll do that eventually 😁

    What crucible do you use I've got a cheapo ebay spesh that after a few firings it starts to crack, not crack open but it starts cracking.

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  6 років тому +1

      Hey matey all my crucibles i buy also from eBay just plain old clay/graphite crucibles. When i first get them i put them in my house oven for a few hours at about 85-90 degrees Celsius then crank it up to about 200 for an hour i then transfer them into my furnace where i heat them slowly to red-hot then leave them in the furnace to cool slowly over night . The reason i do this is because i dont know where the crucibles were stored and they could have been sitting in a damp box in a damp warehouse absorbing moisture for years. I have found with some of my crucibles that if i dont do this they can crack on their first firing and that crack can only get worse each firing. The reason i fire them slowly under 100 degrees for a couple hours is if there is moisture in the crucible that moisture can turn to steam and crack the crucible. I hope this helps mate👍

    • @joshhocking3244
      @joshhocking3244 6 років тому +1

      Ive done all of these steps too still did it but i think i might be cranking up the heat in the furnace too quick thanks though:)

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  6 років тому

      I’ve also had people say if you have the crucible in direct burner flame it can also do damage to the crucible just incase you have 1 of those furnaces that directly heats the crucible 🤷🏻‍♂️👍🏻

    • @joshhocking3244
      @joshhocking3244 6 років тому

      Yeah i have 2 burners that i face directly at the crucible to get the most heat but i see that you have it off to the side so it circulates around, i might have to do some adjusting.

    So many flaws in the pour.... I don't want to be critical because I haven't done this yet, and your vids inspire me. When I do pour some ingots I really want them to not have any air bubbles, folds or shitty spots. How can that be avoided?

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  6 років тому +1

      If you over heated the metal like with copper bronze aluminium bronze it always pours a lot easier almost like water also if the mold was a hell of a lot hotter I would think that would avoid a lot of the holes as well, or so I’ve been told . A lot of my stuff will eventually be re-melted when I run out of scrap so the main reason for me to make most of these ingots was to remove most of the impurities so when I remelt for a future casting projects it’s a lot cleaner that would also help as well.

    • @KarrensMan69
      @KarrensMan69 6 років тому +1

      I've seen some dudes throw Borax in for a "flux", I think that might help some too. One guy said he used broken brown beer bottle glass. I love the pictures you have of all the shit you've stacked up, and the Nordic Gold ingots you made are awesome. I'd be happy pouring some Aluminum Bronze Bars but the main thing to me is getting the air bubbles out. Once I finally get my forge up and running I'll post some vids and give you props.

      Yeah I only use my face shield or full respiratory mask when I add metal to the furnace and while pouring. Safety first matey 👍🏻

    Nice bar,! Did you get much fumes from it?

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  6 років тому

      Yeah . right at the start it was bloody terrible so had to chuck my mask on . 2 days later there was still a lingering smell in the garage from it , Wasn’t very pleasant but well worth it in the end👍🏻

    Good video but the worst thing you can do with brass is to keep re-melting it.

      what is wrong with re-melting brass?

    • @headstocktailstock
      @headstocktailstock 6 років тому +1

      Not wanting to upset big D just trying to help, if you keep re-melting brass you burn the zinc from it & also it doesn't flow as good,it's not the easiest metal to mold anyway, bronze is easier, alluminium alloy can be re-melted & it doesn't seem to affect it. It's easy to melt metal & pour into tart tins but it's the gentle art of persuading it to flow into your mould successfully. hope this helps.

      Hello my friend, I only do this as a hobby in my spare time and I never sell or give away my projects. I would love to do this for a living but my channel only generates about $3 a day so that will never happen . Thanks for watching 😁👍🏻

      Cheers matey yeah I have thought about selling some bars on eBay and after seeing how the bullion bar turned out maybe I could start to sell them? Time will tell my friend but for now I’ll just stockpile it all then maybe look at selling it all off once I’ve had enough of this particular hobby🤷🏻‍♂️👍🏻. I won’t be going anywhere for a while as I have a heap of casting projects I wana try first😁

      I have people who subscribe to me just to give me thumbs down, it can’t be the money i burn because if they’ve been around long enough they know it’s fake, my videos go for 10 or 11 minutes but sometimes one minute after uploading I’ll have a thumbs down so clearly that’s all they’re subscribing for 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Thats bullion you can bank on!! Be careful with your phone tho mate - that warning is an indicator on the battery and cunts fucked if that thing ruptures, like a fireball. Amazing work mate - always enjoy your content, keep it up.
