  • The definitive collection of Bonporti’s chamber music, including many first-ever recordings. Labirinti Armonici is an Italian-based early-music ensemble with a string of Brilliant Classics albums to its credit, focusing on the neglected music of the north-Italian composer Francesco Antonio Bonporti (1672-1749). A priest like his contemporary Vivaldi, he focused his creative energies on music for the church and for chamber ensemble, and it is this impressive catalogue of work that Labirinti Armonici has documented.

Bonporti has by and large been heard only in excerpted, fragmentary form on collections of Italian-Baroquecomposers, but Labirinti Armonici reveal the true breadth of his creative personality. There are four surviving collections of stylish sonatas for two violins and continuo, published as Opp. 1, 2, 4 and 6. Labirinti Armonici take an imaginative approach to the continuo part, enriching the skeletal figured-bass line with cello, harpsichord and organ in various combinations according to the mood and character of each specific sonata.
Having most likely studied the violin with Arcangelo Corelli, Bonporti shares with this master of Baroque-violin style a graceful approach to melody which prizes cantabile above virtuoso flourishes, though a thorough understanding of Baroque ornamentation is needed to make the melodies rise and fall with the harmonic intensity intended by the composer. Bonporti tends to make bolder harmonic excursions than Corelli, and in itself this is likely to make a more striking appeal to modern ears.

For me, Bonporti was just a name that I read in books about baroque music; I hardly remembered it. Here, I discover a gifted and original composer. Thank you for having posted this record.

I wonder how many Baroque era composers who came slightly later - Bach, Handel, Vivaldi - might claim to have been influenced by Bonporti. Or rather, who might hide their influencers?

J S Bach’s influences are well known Corelli, Albinoni, Vivaldi, A. & B. Marcelo., for String Italian composers. Frescobaldi, (subjects) Palestrina, and Pergolsi for ParodyVocal works. And to my knowledge, no manuscript, autographs (in J S Bach’s hand) or his sons or students of Bonporti.
Handel usually unashamedly plagiarized a variety of composers even his friend Telemann, and as well as a number of Italians…Mattheson even published a thinly veiled accusation of plagiarism, but no Bonporti.
In both Composers I mentioned, no evidence of direct or indirect influence. As to any subterfuge, the Baroque period composers made no bones about who or what they borrowed. Or for that matter, for personal use list the composers, such as. Couperin, Stoezel, etc. Other than J S Bach’s Teacher Georg Boehm, and J S Bach, A M Bach didn’t have presence of mind, nor did C P E Bach to write the name of the composer when their handwriting is involved.
That fountain of error, Wikipedia, claims Bonporti influenced J S Bach’s inventions, which previously were called Preambulum in WF Bach’s Notebooklet. Besides the title, Bonporti work published in 1712, is a Violin solo over a simple figured Bass accompaniment, in several movements, with triple stopped and other characteristics of violin writing. This contrasts with Bach’s single movement pieces in imitative counterpoint. Encyclopedia Britanica’s Attica mentions the connection and attribution of the Tittle with the word “may”…as J S Bach doesn’t start compiling his son’s notebook until 1720, makes the Invention and Sinfonia as first separate collection after his Cantor appointment, which appears in his students works 1725…the opposite side of the coin “may not” is more likely.
Four of Bonporti’s found their way into the Bachgesellschaft edition of Bach’s music, however works by Purcell, and other composers likewise found their way and are in the Anhang list which I do not know, although no one gives a reason for the mistaken attribution. In short it’s not like Bonporti pieces had been copied into Anna M. Bach’s 1725 Notebook similar to the two minuets from Petzold’s G major Suite.

Saudações do Brasil. 🇧🇷

      Ahhhh....
      Vive la France!;
      Vive le Québec libre.

I don’t believe in an afterlife but I do have a profound hope that there is an infinite and abominably painful circle of hell reserved for those who are responsible for these loud and moronic ads being placed between movements.

    What does B.C. stand for?
    ...two violins and B.C.

B.C. stands for basso continuo, simply for the accompaniment instruments. They provided the harmonic structure of the music by supplying a bassline and a chord progression. It's mostly used in Baroque music.

Grazie
