Did you ever hear the story of the Christmas tree who just didn’t want to change the show? He liked living in the woods and playing with squirrels, he liked icicles and snow. He liked wolves and eagles and grizzly bears and critters and creatures that crawled. Why bugs were some of his very best friends, spiders and ants and all. Now, that’s not to say that he ever looked down on a vision of twinkling lights, Or on mirrored baubles and peppermint canes and a thousand other delights. And he often had dreams of tiny reindeer and a jolly old man in sleigh full of toys and presents and wonderful things, and the story of Christmas Day. Oh Alfie believed in Christmas alright, he was full of Christmas cheer, All of each and every day and all throughout the year. To him it was more than a special time, much more than a special day, It was more than a beautiful story, it was special kind of way. You see some folks have never heard a jingle bell ring and they’ve never heard of Santa Clause. They’ve never heard the story of the Son of God, and that made Alfie pause. Did that mean they’d never know of peace on earth or the brotherhood of man? Or know how to love? Or know how to give? If they can’t, no one can. You see life is a very special kind of thing, not just for chosen few. But for each and every living, breathing thing, not just me and you. So in your Christmas prayers this year, Alfie asked me if I’d ask you, Say a prayer for wind, and the water, and the wood, and those who live there, too.
"You see, life is a very special kind of thing; not just for a chosen few, but for each and every living thing. Not just me and you." These are the words the world needs to hear every day, especially now. Thanks, John...
A very good friend of mine who I had the privilege of being a caregiver for, passed away to to this song, literally taking his final breath as it ended. It's not a bad song to go to sleep to. Thank you for the upload.
This brings back a flood of memories. My parents had this on 8 track. It's a shame John Denver took so much grief. He was such a calming humanitarian. The world could truly use someone like him today.
As a wildlife biologist and environmentalist, this is one of my all time favorite Christmas songs. I've loved it since before I even thought about becoming a biologist, and I will love it until I die!
" . . . so in your Christmas prayers this year Alfie asked me if I'd ask you Say a prayer for the wind and the water and the wood And those who live there too."
This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. The Christmas season begins in our home as soon as this is played for the first time. So precious and I hope we can all live in this fashion.
I wish there was a Love button as this is a family album in our house to. My children have been brought up with it and Christmas starts with this ....They all have a copy of the Cd
I taught both my kiddos this song when they were very little. My lovely daughter still plays it at Christmas. I have a cassette tape of my firstborn, who was 3 at the time, asking me to sing "V". That is what he called the song. He sang along. He estranged himself from family and friends 6 years ago. When I listen to the song now, my heart hurts.
My parents got the vinyl edition as a gift back when it first came out. Years later they got it on cassette when my sister and I were growing up and we wore that tape right out. My sister's moved out of the house now, as have I...and now we each have our own copy on CD. This really is the best Christmas album of all time.
This parable is a great way to understand why respecting the land and nature is so important, not just on Xmas but every day of the year. We can all know everything, without ever knowing why. Leave Alfie alone, and celebrate in your heart for the blessings of life every day.
Oh, how this song brings back memories. It was the Christmas I found out I was pregnant with my #4 son. I remember watching this with my 3 boys. This song always makes me cry. And yet here I am listening to this on August 2. Such happy times when my boys were little and needed their Mommy. They're all grown now and have lives of their own. It's our tradition to listen to this CD when they come at Christmas. And I have to hide my tears when this song comes on. How I miss John Denver and Jim Hensen.
I've been listening to this song/album since the late 70's. It's been my mom's favorite for all these years. Well, mom left us this year, and this song brings such warm memories. Merry Christmas.
Its the same here. Christmas never starts without listening to this song. Its so lovely and warm. The Christmas spirit really sinks in after this wonderfull song.
I love this too...I loved and still love John Denver. I'm of his generation and have seen him in concert at least a half a dozen times and fell in love with him even more every time I saw him.
I used to play the Muppet Christmas album while my young sons and I decorated the tree. This was one of my favorite songs. I'd sing it in the car to them and all around the house. It's a prayer, really. Makes me feel as though I'm right back there as if no time has gone by. Thank you, John.
I got this album, yes LP, for Christmas when I was about 5-6 years old. This brings me back to my childhood. Played it so much I think it has grooves cut into it.
I love John Denver and the muppets christmas songs every year at christmas. The season of hope and love and giving and understanding for all mankind. A time to put our differences aside and be greatful for health and love for all people no matter how different they are we are all human.
Oh Alfie the Xmas tree. Wow. i love this so much. Thank you for sharing this. My mum has the LP and we have played it every year since i was born in '83 - and probably before. It just isn't Xmas until John Denver and the Muppets has been played. Brings back such fond memories of the adolescence of childhood and the excitement of Xmas. I know i will be passing this tradition onto my family - although we have moved onto the CD version now - not quite the same without the crackling and skipping!!xx
In this crazy year of 2020, more than ever, this is the song that embodies the Christmas spirit. I have loved it since it was released, and like almost everyone here it's been the family favourite. I wish they would pipe this through every city, for everyone to hear. - stay safe, everyone
My oldest Christmas memories include this album, and my first christmas on my own, my mom bought me the cd. Not the same as the record I grew up listening too, but now I get to share it with my kids too
This is one of my all-time favorite Christmas songs, such a beautiful melody and a beautiful message. It saddens me this hasn't gotten more views - everyone on earth should hear this! Thanks for posting - Merry Christmas to all creatures, great and small!

Thanks for the lyrics! It's "mirrored bubbles", like the ornaments.. "Special time to play" -> "special kind of way". As in a philosophy. A way to see and love the world. It was more than a special day, in that, "Alfie was full of Christmas cheer. All of each and every day, and all throughout the year." It was Alfie's year - round way of being :) Sorry for the exposition, but I didn't want to just say "you're wrong.”, as that would defeat the purpose of the song. Hope you have a great Christmas. :)
The first time I heard this album I was celebrating Christmas with my grandparents and then they passed it on to me John denver and the muppets really knew the meaning of Christmas I love this song it's one of my favorites.
Thanks for sharing. Mom would let us stay home from school one day to decorate and this was a huge staple in our house and now is being passed on to my kids. Folks are 70 but still play this at their house every Christmas.
I have loved this song since I was a young girl... It holds a message I try to carry with me all year long. Thank you for posting... Happy Christmas to each and every one of you...

I miss you with all of my soul Henry...you left a blank spot in this old world when you left! As an indigenous woman this song means so much to me! 🌲
"You see, life is a very special kind of thing; not just for a chosen few, but for each and every living thing. Not just me and you."
These are the words the world needs to hear every day, especially now. Thanks, John...
+huntress1863 He saved my life with his songs in 1975. I miss John.
Be Well

The world would be a better place if John denver was still here

Love this song, always brings a tear to my eye. I wish they'd rerun THIS special instead of all the lame Lifetime movies at Christmastime.
oh I so agree..... something about this song just touches the heart so deep !
No kidding. So great.
I agree
I don't think this was a special. It was just an album.
You mean they don't rerun the classics?
My nine year old keeps playing this! Now I can't stop playing it. Absolutely beautiful! Our record is slightly scratched now! Thank God for youtube!
My parents got the vinyl edition as a gift back when it first came out. Years later they got it on cassette when my sister and I were growing up and we wore that tape right out.

Brings tears to my eyes remembering watching this many years with my children.
I have no words to describe the amount of insane greatness of this song.
