    1) No, the Romans did *NOT* take the Greek gods and gave them new names. This is a common misconception.
While it _might_ be true for *two* gods out of the whole pantheon (Apollo and Bacchus), the rest are *NOT* Greek gods.
The Romans had *THEIR OWN, PRE-EXISTING* deities, which were *VERY DIFFERENT* from their Greek counterparts.
What they did, Roman syncretism, was entirely different.
They would conquer new people and tell them that their sea god was the same as the Roman sea god but with another name, that their agriculture goddess was the same as the Roman agriculture goddess but with another name, and so on. And this would happen with every single civilization they encountered, from Germanics to Greek to Egyptians to Celtic, to Persian...
And they did this even when it didn't make sense.
Example: Ares, the Greek god of war, is the closest thing to a main villain in the Greek pantheon, it was hated and reviled by the poets, and presented as a negative figure, opposite to the other war goddess, Athena, which represented justice and wisdom, other than war. Mars, the Roman god of war, was one of the top three gods of the Roman pantheon, was beloved and revered, had a temple in every city, his colors and symbology were taken as the symbols of the nation, and in the myths was *the very father of Romulus and Remus.*
But then the Romans conquered Greek land and they told the Greeks that Ares and Mars were the same.
    2) No, the Romans did *NOT* name their Gods after the planets (especially not the ones they hadn't discovered yet). *IT'S THE OTHER WAY AROUND.*
    🤦‍♂

    • @PotatoSoundSystem
      @PotatoSoundSystem Місяць тому

Yeah I hate when people say that too, The Romans viewed Greek gods as counterparts, not the same gods under different names, for example Venus was associated with Aphrodite because they had similar domains (love, beauty)

Your explanation of Hindu Mythology is not wrong . A few may contradict obviously because there are multiple books called Puranas that are the source of mythology. And there are 108 of these....and in some purana Shiva is central character in some it is Vishnu and so on and in Devi Puran (Devi=Goddess) we also have a character very similar to Gaia who is the real and ultimate Power of universe who create the 3 trinity and then divides herself into smaller female deities and semi-deity characters that are often the life partner of the trinity and basically guide them on how the trinity should do their job and why their job is important. As any wife inspires their husband to be better. It really is colourful and ones view is very much moulded based on which book(Purana) and stories they are introduced to first.

AWESOME VIDEO! Just some notes: Olodumare [masculine creator]-- is not a masculine form, TeamGXOne. Olodumare is the truest name, while the other names for Yoruba one-God, like "Olorun" were corrupted by Biblical translations attempting to use Yoruba language by European colonizers and missionaries, using the word "Olorun" as translation for the male god of the Israelites Yahweh. Olorun is not a male form nor masculine name. Olodumare has no sex or gender. Both Obatala and Olokun, traditionally in the stories are sex/gender-fluid. Both beings having male and female forms. While there are many traditional Yoruba religious origin stories, one of them being Irunmole-Yemonja birthing the first humans into existence. One of the most common traditional stories before colonialism was the unification or team-up of irunmole-Yemonja and irunmole-Obatala to create "the first human bodies". Yemonja "provided the water and created the clay/mud", Obatala "sculpted" the bodies from said clay/mud (Obatala also became drunk, to explain deformities and disabilities at birth), and Olodumare created and gave the clay/mud sculptures immoral human souls, "EMI" and "ORI". All "Irunmole" are Orishas not all Orishas are Irunmole. Yemonja is -"the metaphysical mother of all Orishas". -she is "the mother of all humanity". Her team-up with Obatala, commanded by Olodumare (Olofi), explains these huge titles that she alone has. While Yemonja was originally the paramount river-diety of the Yoruba (owner of the Ogun river ---the largest river in Yoruba land), being mother of the other major Orishas of rivers, like Oya and Oshun. Yemonja was always tied to "primordial waters". Across the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, it is said that Yemonja was the first Orisha to follow and sooth the cries of racially-enslaved Africans who would be sent to Latin America, thus Yemonja became the co-ruler of the oceans-and-seas along with her child Olokun.

@@thelongestjohn Yeah, that does work for most of them. You can definitely get a good picture of Algonquians that way, whereas they only seemed to have had some minor differences (east coast having this idea of leaving the turtle to a new land, that being destroyed & them coming back. Montagnais season change story being about 2 brothers, but Anishinaabeg being about an old man in the north & a young woman in the south.) I think the only one that doesn't work for is Siouan, because they split into so many different micro-groups at some point, each distinct groups' religious beliefs don't really add up. That, & you can't use other Iroquoian or Muskogean religions to get a good understanding of Cherokee beliefs, though you can see where a lot of the inspirations come from, on both sides.

I quite like some parts of the video but do have to comment on one inaccuracy that i noticed, at 22:48 you state that the "Gods" which in this case are the Aesir go to an apocalyptic war against the Vanir but then are all reborn. This is not true at all, while the Aesir and Vanir did have wars they managed to sort out their major differences and sort out a peace treaty which resulted in the creation of Kvasir, what really happens at Ragnarök is that both the Aesir and Vanir as well as Humanity and the Einherjarl team up against the opposing army made up of Jotunns, Monsters and Undead lead by Loki Laufeyson and the fire Jotnar Surtr. After a brutal battle most of everything lies dead including Loki the Aesir, the Vanir and the Jotunns. Two humans which his on the world tree survive along with a very small number of previously mostly unmentioned gods with Baldur being an ecception that xomes bavk to life.

Quite a bit wrong with the Yoruba mythos...
Olorun is the "Pre-Creator" god [and is actually genderless], and the trinity actually more directly consists of Olorun, Olodumare [masculine creator] and Eleda [feminine creator], with Olofi more belonging to the Orishas, than the supreme god head.
While there IS an incarnation of Earth's creation story involving Obatala [King of the Orishas], this story is more commonly associated with Orunmila the god of the Priesthood and is the high priest of heaven. Lastly, the main goddess of the waters is Olokun, the goddess of the oceans, while Yemoja, is the goddess of rivers, but also other landlocked bodies of water. [BTW, the "J" makes a regular "j" sound, only in Santeria, Obeah and Candomble is the "J" pronounced with a "y" sound]

    • @PaoloCavestro-ey9bb

Monotheism is inherently divisive and tyrannical. Think about it: if you believe blindly to just one god,you are forced to think that the gods of other religions are demons ( or that they just don't exist and they are just "fairy tales"). This Is unavoidable. A monotheist cannot REALLY tolerate other cults except his/ hers, and therefore, every real monotheist is intolerant. Therefore the fault is of Monotheism itself, not of ( supposed) "bad misconceptions".
