    Its difficult for me to understand how someone could call any of that cheating. Before writing, you outline. Before animating, you storyboard. Before painting, you sketch. It just prepares the ideas so you can go in with a plan.

    I actually improved greatly in my art because I would trace :( I would trace the Teen Titans and before that I couldn't draw hands and was too scared. After I kept tracing the hands I understood them a bit more and they became less scary to attempt on my own. As long as you don't trace a drawing and call it your own original work I don't see anything wrong with it.

      @@zoomie7 Quite honestly, I beleive that is because she does not neet it, and never did. She is simply too talented, she does not "think" or work the same way as most people. She was giving her honest opinion, but what helps improve is different for everyone, it's ok!
      Also, I've already seen sketching at cheating, but as Neu dae said, only if you call it your own (it's just not)

    Reference pictures is not cheating... Lol. EVERY SINGLE professional artist I have met that draws from life uses reference photos. Personally I draw from life and sometimes take pictures so I can refer to them later. Im not capable to just 'remember' how things look 100% and I believe that applies to most if not ALL artists. So when artists say they "remembered perfectly how an animal looks or a character looks like" I call BULLSHIT. Yes, people can draw things so much that they end up remembering how to replicate it, but that's rare if not impossible unless you have a photographic memory.
    Art is the imitation of life and as long as someone isn't tracing every single thing then it is NOT cheating what so ever.
    P.s
    Also tracing does help for beginners to understand proportions but don't rely on it because your skills will only grow to a certain extent

    • @dmb1745
      @dmb1745 5 років тому +9

      Also drawing from memory is still using reference. The references are just memories you've collected by using your eyes. Same thing but the references are just murkier and less detailed. People need to rely on actual references in order to produce artwork that is anatomically correct for example. The idea that references are "cheating" is so childish and I can't even comprehend how some people believe that.

      @Underswap Papyrus
      I see what you mean but in the art world drawing from life isn't seen as a reference. It is an original source. References are things that can be taken with you that refer back to the scene

    • @LoriFahy
      @LoriFahy 5 років тому +1

      i love what you said here.. also, tattoo artists trace out their designs on the body before going at it with a tattoo gun.. the image left on the skin is a LOT more than just the traced outlines. Not many people have that good of a memory that they can remember every single aspect of everything they see in life, and reference photos and pictures are a great source of inspiration.

    This comment is not directed towards you Jamie... because if anyone knows about this that would be you, but I do not consider referencing cheating at all. Sometimes classmates will look at my art and be like “woah that’s so cool! Did you use a reference?” I would say yes since I did and somehow they take it as less legitimate or something. It would be 300% more impressive if I can just draw a realistic human face just from memory, but guess what, most people probably can’t. When drawing something literal, especially realistic, it is *recommended* to use references, that way the final product will look better.
    Also I just wanted to say the Toy Story music box is just the best...

    • @katherinechoi9500
      @katherinechoi9500 5 років тому +13

      I agree 💯%. I'm a BFA art student and posted something similiar.
      Although my drawing prof. tells us not to use pictures (he's all about drawing directly from the source) I do it anyway! I don't have time to sit for 10 hrs at a freaking zoo whilst half the time the animal is moving around. If it's a building or scenic drawing I'll draw from the source but there is a thing to be said for the passage of time/ changing sky colors and light sources. It seems cruel to be forced to only draw from the source when the environment is changing.
      That being said I do take very detailed initial sketches from life but also take a lot of reference pics. because realism/surrealism is what I do.

    • @ellabellacookie9662
      @ellabellacookie9662 5 років тому +4

      Agreed. Artists like Chuck Close use references as well, and no one can say that man doesn't have serious talent. I think its because of the age we are at where artists on social media are developing art styles in order to post frequent work, and once you have a style down references aren't needed as much so people just presume its like that for all styles of art. When attempting more hyper realistic works in particular, a reference is pretty much essential.
      look at the difference, A man paints a realistic portrait using reference: ua-cam.com/video/f-TYO0cGFmQ/v-deo.html
      two months later the same artist attempts realism without reference: ua-cam.com/video/qu9KNUxAfBY/v-deo.html
      Don't get me wrong, they are both incredible but there is a clear difference. He chose to do it in black and white rather than colour, the second eye seems bigger than it should be to, the space between the hair and side of face is off, and it looks a little like the woman had been face tuned around the jawline, under eye and mouth. I don't see how using photo references is any different from using Windsor and newton paints vs dollar store ones. It just makes it easier, it doesn't detract from the effort we put into it.

      You make a very good point. When I draw people without references they certainly are not bad, but they certainly are not realistic. I have a very unique style when not using a reference but that's not what I personally am going for.

    I often hear people say that using references is cheating...But this is so wrong. References are sooooooo important. Even if you think you know how a thing looks like, chances are high that you still don't get it 100% right at the end. Even big, experienced artist use references. For example, draw something from your memory, a cat, a horse, or an apple, everyone knows what these things look like, right? But what you remember and what a thing really looks like can be very different. But when you use a reference and see details you maybe forgot, your art will be become better.

    I did animation and we were always told tracing poses and using references is the best way to learn. For our final films we were encouraged to act out every this shot and film it so we knew the angles of the camera and lines of action. I’m more of an illustrator and pose references are still so valuable!

  • @adaharrisonn
    @adaharrisonn 5 років тому +36

    Tracing does help a lot actually! It helps you get a feel for how the art piece you're working from has its anatomy and sizing and proportions laid out, however this mostly applies to when you're doing a figure that you want to make look accurate/a very specific style/realistic. You might be doing the same mistake over and over with your art and not realizing what exactly is wrong with it, and by the same branch, you might not realize what it is about the reference work that's different from yours, even though you're looking right at it. Tracing over things helps your hand and muscle memory get a feel for how the lines work together and how to sort of intuitively lay out the style you're trying to achieve. It helps many, many artists grow and improve. Many professionals recommend tracing! Of course, the ONLY reason you should do it is for personal research and practice and never to contribute to your final piece, and certainly not for theft! Many others in the comments here seem to agree. That's fine that tracing never did anything to help you personally, but it is a very helpful tool for many beginners :)

  • @starshade479
    @starshade479 5 років тому +7

    Personally, I think tracing - if used correctly - can help a lot with developing muscle memory for drawing, as well as better understanding/being able to break down different elements to an artwork. That said, practicing or getting used to those different elements through tracing is what it is, usually - practicing, getting used to it. More often than not, it's not used to create final, original pieces, I don't think, but it can really help people if it's what works for them

  • @TessaAvonlea
    @TessaAvonlea 5 років тому +17

    Sometimes i use a trace/charcoal transfer of a few lines when i'm starting a big painting. In the past, i've found that i've got half way through the painting then blamed my sketch for why it isn't looking the way i want it to. I find that if i trace a couple of bits, i don't have that excuse to give up.
    That said, more often than not i do just draw freehand. I definitely wouldn't recommend relying on tracing but i don't think it's cheating or a big "no no".

    Thank you for sharing your process, Jamie! A concept sketch is not cheating. I do a very similar thing when I make an outline before I start writing a book. Like your sketches, it rarely resembles the finished piece. I also do research before I write, especially if I'm unfamiliar with a subject my character would know. Right now, I'm looking at wilderness survival books for a fantasy character who is a hunter of sorts. It's been a long time since Girl Scouts, so I might try some of the camping stuff in my backyard so I can describe it properly.
    Techniques help artists interpret and inhabit their creations. They're tools, like brushes and pencils and word processing programs. 😊

I turned 30 this year and thought I’d take up painting, it’s been so much hilarious trial and error and I’ve been watching artists on UA-cam for tips on how they work, and as you don’t do as many ‘tutorial’ videos I was just watching you for fun and inspiration. So this was a pleasant surprise and much needed! Especially this topic as my reference sketches are currently taking more time than the piece itself, so I’m doing something wrong 😅

    Tracing is actually entirely helpful. My drawing level before I traced was literally toddler-level. I'm not a good drawer, but my skill now after tracing is a thousand times better. It taught me how to draw shapes and how to follow references. I know so many people and artists who actually have traced at some point to help improve their knowledge and understanding of the subject they desire to draw.

    When I started I used the grid method. It helped me learn about shading, porportion, detail and so forth. It's a good tool to use when learning.
