      Also, while feeding the damn moose is a very bad idea, if you ARE going to do so, at least put the food in the palm of your hand and hold it out to the moose. Holding food between your fingers and offering it to an animal with very strong jaws is a great way to lose fingers. Not that the moose would bite them off on purpose, just that if it misjudged where the fruit is it's got the bite strength to EASILY remove your appendages.

    • @Xanthelei
      @Xanthelei 3 місяці тому +493

      @@daerdevvyl4314 This is true of every grazing herbivore, ever. One of the first things I was taught as a kid growing up around horses (our neighbor had three) was when you offer food that isn't a big bundle of grass, you put it in the middle of your palm and spread your hand as wide as you can so it cups down. That way even if the horse isn't careful they won't get a good grip on your skin.
      While most horses are careful taking treats, that seems to be a domestication thing - I'm not sure I'd want to hand feed a small treat to ANY wild herbivore, even with my hand spread flat!

    As a Canuk I can tell you, Moose are extremely intelligent quadrupedal ungulates. They have an amazing memory and can remember individual persons. Many have compared the intelligence of a moose to that of a wild horse, yet unlike horses moose tend to be solitary for the most part. Most folks are afraid of a moose because of their imposing stature and of course they have seen videos of moose charging, for example: by a cow with calves or a male during the rut. During the Canadian winters Moose tend to be less grumpy and more appreciative of carrots or an apple accidentally dropped from your car while you are parked admiring them.

    I grew up in the northern tip of Maine. Moose casually walked across our porch pretty regularly and we were taught to be calm but not to interact. They were so curious. Another time when I was out running (in New Brunswick Canada), I came around a corner and a huge bull was in my path and I was like NOTHING TO SEE HERE, SIR, JUST SILENTLY BACKING UP. Moose are smarter than you think. They can associate the location of the fridge as a food source very quickly, even bring friends. If it really wanted to out of hunger, it can come back and break through since it sees you as non threatening (dominatable) to get to the source of yumyums. Some of them might get aggressive if it thinks you're hiding the gems.

So there was all these calves and I made my husband who is from the country and was totally embarrassed to go ask the people if I could pet the calves I’m sure they thought I was weird. They said yes, so I got all excited walked up to the pen and as soon as they saw me the human, they all went running as far away from the fence as they could get, so I couldn’t pet them. I’m sure my husband was dying.

I saw another video where a guy raised a stick over his head grunting at a moose while stepping toward it to scare it away while the girl he was with cowarded and tried running away. I'm not saying anyone can just do that but he was just applying a little pressure to tell the moose that wasn't OK.

      When animals are hungry in the winter an apple snack is a joy. This looks like a fairly young moose. If he senses no fear he will probably stay calm. And the man can always close the door. An ungulate can't challenge that. A bear would be a very different customer.
