I must say, completely Amazing how well you figure out powder measures. Years back I did rifle reloading, 30-06 and 30-30. We usually poured the IMR 3031 into the RCBS 502 bal scale. Recently I put in for my pistol license, and bought a Sig P320 full 9mm, I decided to also try and reload that 9mm round. I bought that powder you showed, Win231 and bought 115g tips and cases. I reloaded 100 the old way. However I watched how reloaders use a powder measure. So I invested in the Lee Deluxe Powder measure, thinking it was going to be as easy as the measurements on the balance beam 502, Nope. I became perplexed, this is too difficult. And I feel I don’t have the time to take a course on quantum physics, to figure out what makes time travel possible. Lee tech emailed me explaining I would need some CC charts to figure the VMD etc, and I frankly don't understand, why the need to jump thru hoops. Why not just turn the dial to 4.7g and throw it? So I am about to return this measure and the mount. Then I figured I'd look I into videos with the RCBS Uniflow measures, to see if there is a difference, but nope, no difference. What say ye?
Hi Minister. Thanks for stopping by. Two things. First, you can’t just dial in a grain weight on the Lee Powder measure because it dispenses by volume, such as cc, not by weight. All smokeless powders have different Volumetric Density, or VMD. That means that a cc of Win231 weighs different than 1 cc of Unique. So if you set the dial such that it throws 4.7 grains of 231, what you have really done is set the volume of a cylinder in that measure so that it will dispense that amount. The adjustment screw on the measure turns a piston into or out of that cylinder, changing its volume. Now, if you do nothing to the adjustment setting, and switch to Unique, you won’t get 4.7 grains anymore. Unique is “fluffier” or less dense, than 231 and you can’t cram as much into the same space in that cylinder. You’ll get a smaller weight of powder. Complicating the matter is the fact that our data manuals call for powder charges in grams, not cc. Weight, not volume. The mechanical powder measures like your Lee and my RCBS dispense in cc, not grams. Volume, not weight. So, we have to convert the volume dispensed by the measure into the weight called for by the book. “Convert”? Hmmm…sounds like we need a calculator. We do..but your beam balance is your calculator! You simply set the dial on the measure arbitrarily at first, dispense a charge and weight on the balance. If it’s light, we dump the powder back and turn the screw out, increasing the volume of that cylinder and try again. Repeat until we have found the setting on the dial that gibes us the desired weight. Write that number down for next time but remember that this value is only good for THIS POWDER! Next session, if you need a different charge and/or use a different powder you do the process again. Keep records of settings for various charges and the process will go much faster next time. Whew! SECOND 😀 The balance beam DOES “dispense” by weight, just like what the book calls for. No ‘converting’ or adjusting necessary! So why in the Sam Hill do we need that infernal Lee or RCBS powder measure? We DON’T. It’s just faster. With rifle cartridges where we don’t reload the numbers of rounds we want for handgun shooting, so speed and efficiency isn’t all that important Trust me..once you’ve set up the powder measure a couple of times it’s easy. Hi, and thanks for watching. Several shims are supplied with the micrometer stem. They are very thin washers. They may be placed over the threaded stem in combinations that allow the micrometer to be screwed tightly to the rotor, yet leave scale facing the desired direction to be readable. If the shims are not used (and they might not be needed), the micrometer scale may face an unreadable direction when the unit is screwed down tightly. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
