  • I'm not much of a gear head, but realistic gear reviews based on real life experiences seem to be a rarity on UA-cam. So I'm launching a new gear review series (currently untitled), where I'll give my honest opinions on different kits, gear, etc.
Make sure to leave suggestions below on what you guys want me to review.
My Background: I am a former Special Forces SGM that started my career as an 11B or basic infantryman, and became a Special Forces 18B weapons specialist and served 9 combat rotations overseas. I served as a Sniper, Assaulter, JTAC, TSE expert, Free Fall jumpmaster and more.
I served in 3rd SFG, 10th SFG, USASOC, 19th SFG, and the CIA as a GRS officer protecting Case Officers overseas. I have a Bachelors degree in Homeland Security/Crisis Management and I appreciate you all tuning in!
I own Fieldcraft Survival LLC, in Heber City, Utah where we specialize in teaching civilians to be prepared for the worst case scenario. First Aid, Mindset, Fitness, Tactics, Mobility, and so much more.

I’ll gear up in private, when I did it in a public range or public setting I got talked down by military/cops why I was trying to be like them ever since then I purchased my own land and set up my private range. Thanks for being down to earth, so many cops/military dudes have such big ego’s it’s hard to deal with.

I have shot many matches where I was able to not only beat the brakes off law enforcement but watch my son do the same. When he was 14 he beat the head of the FBI from the state of Louisiana for 11 hrs in the MS state USPSA match. We have seen many law enforcement officers get ego checked. Just remember the ego won't get you home, the training will. 👍

My cousin was in the Corps during Vietnam. Wore the flack jacket and the iron panties. Everybody gave him crap until they saved his jewels from a bouncing bettie. Literally hit him in the crouch. He went one way, the mine went the other. He was wounded but still had grand babies. He laughed when he told me that everybody was wearing them when he got back to his unit.

When I took my first class I was too shy to wear my body armor, but a dude there was like, "Don't worry about what anyone thinks, it's better to wear it and not need it, than to have another beginner accidentally flag and shoot you while you're not wearing it." I wear it at classes 100% of the time now.

11:44 This is precisely why - when you armor yourself, you're protecting your whole family. It's why we stay in shape and get regular checkups. It's why you keep your vehicle in good working order and check the tires. It's why you get to know the people in your neighborhood. All of these are the ways we protect our loved ones.

Some great considerations, and excellent points made, Mike.
So I worked in Armored Car for several years. Worked though the fiery but mostly peaceful stuff too. We had, not in the company but in the industry, so many armored cars robbed or outright killed in El Paso that the FBI set up stings with ghost vans. As a result, the owner of the company wanted the employees to practice more and so she asked me to start taking people out to my range when I would go.
Man I can tell you I used to get made fun of a lot in that profession because I ran a red dot and a light on my pistol, and level 4 plates in my carrier. Everyone would laugh at how expensive my gear was, and all that stuff. Yet when you put a red dot handgun in their hands they could suddenly shoot much more easily, even with a gun they never shot before. Like, people went from constellations for shot groups to mostly within an a zone. An hour or two of practice made them significantly better.
When my buddy asked me about the armor choice I made, I explained my reasoning and we took a vest out with us. The PROVIDED vest stopped two 9mm rounds before it failed. Two shots from about 7 yards. My plate still isn't dead from countless 30-06, .308, .300blk, 5.56. The main weapons used against couriers are rifles and handguns, usually when we are at ATMs or coming back to the vans. I cant say enough how important rifle armor is in that industry. Anyway, after we showed the videos to the other employees almost all of them upgraded to 3+, and most of them started attending the practice shoots.
I know you didn't touch on it, but if I can also just hammer home how important medical gear AND training is. We had a courier working on an ATM. He had just set down his bag full of money and was going through the process of opening the kaba lock when a shot came out from a man hiding in the bed of a truck across a parking lot. The courier was struck in the chest and bled to death, while the people around him thought he "had a heart attack". The attacker's accomplice scooped up the bag of money in the confusion and walked off. Cameras would later help to ID that man, and he turned in the attacker. And while it's a small chance, if someone had medical skills and some gear on scene, that courier might have survived. Basic medical training by some very skilled EMTs out here is $35. Full med kits go for around $100-250. For less than $300, less than my body armor or any of my guns, anyone can get some skills and potentially save someone's life.
Civilians should have all the gear they want and need. Gear doesn't make anyone better, but training with the gear sure does help. My apologies for the rambling mess. Good vid.

EMTs are really charging $35 to tell you "rip open this pack of quikclot and stuff the entire roll into the GSW then hold pressure on it?" Let me save you all a dinner at red lobster, the only thing you are really going to be able to do in the field as a civilian, even as a paramedic, is pack the wound with gauze and hold pressure. If someone has a thoracic GSW, they are officially fucked until they are tossed on the operating table. All it takes is holding the roll of quikclot in one hand and using the other to stuff the wound like a turkey. Amazon has a QuikClot trauma package for $23 as of yesterday.

If you never had to wear one of those god-awful things be happy. Otherwise I agree with this video, light and fast if at all possible. 90% of the gear I use is light weight hiking gear with small amounts of tactical gear mixed in when needed. I'd drop $1000s in armor plates on the ground rather than carry them any kind of meaningful distance. Ounces are pounds.

One day there was a big gang shootout that lasted for like 20 minutes in our apartment complex, and ended with a drive by that sent a bunch of stray rounds into the apartments. Struck a baby and a few other people. Rather have armor to toss on my kids or myself or whoever is with me than not have anything at all. 3. I "get" why some people think civilians wearing armor and helmets is "dorky" and some do get a little dorky. That said, why not use every tool you have at your disposal to your advantage?
If you are in a home defense scenario where you have time to armor up before a potential breach of your house, why not gain more advantage?
Your points about family members was also a very underrated point. If I have an 8 year old daughter, I'm not tossing her a SCAR to cover me. Always nice to see a veteran giving information to help civilians too, any time I can hear information from someone based on their experiences I try to soak it up. Its useful information but also the context was probably the best part. Any time I run into a vet who has stories they want to share I usually buckle up for the ride, its stuff that as a civilian (short of WWIII) I will never experience and its interesting to digest.

    Hey Mike!
Thanks for the awesome advice. As a concerned and prepared civilian, I really appreciate the information and experience you’re providing to people like myself, my family and others so we can make better decisions and really think through things in terms of setting up kit and maximizing it’s potential if need be.
Personally, I like a lot of the stuff from Velocity systems. The reason is because they make really good quality and lightweight body armor if you can get your hands on it, but mostly because they make the Mayflower UW Gen4 Chest rig, which is a pretty fantastic piece of kit overall.
It’s pretty lightweight and not very bulky, but holds 4 AR rifle magazines, two double stack pistol mags and can still hold other necessary equipment like radios, IFAKS, food, GPS’s, printed maps and other necessary items in its extra GP pouches.
Regardless of what flavor of choice you decide to run in terms of Plate Carriers, or what your mission needs are, The Mayflower UW chestrig can easily be swift clipped in and then strapped over a multitude of lightweight and lower vis plate carriers and cumberbunds, or even on top of something that is inherently more scalable like a JPC.
Trex arms makes a great back strap which really helps the Mayflower UW integrate into almost any modern plate carrier that has the ability to accept swift clip placards, since it allows you to take off the chestrig shoulder harness portion altogether and run it as a placard style setup that saves weight and cuts down on bulk and unnecessary straps being everywhere. Increased comfort, less bulk and lighter overall weight are always beneficial in my mind as well.
If you needed to ever don or doff the chestrig part of the plate carrier in order to drop weight in the front or bulk for scaling a building or climbing, or for making your signature move low vis, it literally just swiftclips and velcros in and out in seconds instead of having to be hard MOLLE’d to your kit which takes time. You could simply throw it into a bag and run a more slick setup until you wanted to scale up your kit, and then bam, you have a very usable and capable in my opinion fighting setup to supplement your rifle, pistol, comms, and still have room for other essential kit.
Check them out if you haven’t already, because they’re absolutely one of my favorites in terms of people producing great body armor kit these days.

I know you were asking Mike, but if you haven't tried a dot, you should. It's a fantastic upgrade. It's self diagnostic. If you flinch, if you're wobbly, you see it. Dry fire with a dot is incredible, as you can see so easily your mistakes, train to make that dot stay still through a trigger press, and you're going to improve your shooting. I practice by keeping the dot ON a light switch in my house at over 10 yards. I'm 4 years into dots on all my pistols, and I think the term game changer is overused, but it fits here. The other thing that I think is huge about RDS is situational awareness/target focus. Yes, you can shoot 2 eyes open with irons, but to me, it's not the same as full time target focus. I don't think anyone but maybe EXTREMELY high level shooter would think that they would actually front site focus under extreme stress. With an RDS, it's not even a consideration, as there are no focal planes to consider.

The oldest definition of "arms" I could find included Body Armor: "Weapons of Offence, or Armour of Defence." (sic). A founding era definition I found was: "Any Thing that may be used for offensive or DEFENSIVE purposes; usu. refers to weapons of MILITARY UTILITY." [EMPHASIS MINE]. The founders knew the difference between long guns, handguns, swords, etc. and could have easily said, "the right of the people to keep and carry handguns (or shotguns, or long guns openly, or any number of other things)," but they didn't. They used the term "arms". Contrary to Obiden's ignorant statement, Americans could and did buy and own cannons at time of the founding. Otherwise, what would have been purpose of including the power to issue Letters of Marque and Reprisal in the Constitution; and, furthermore, why did they actually do so, and to whom, a couple times?!

You are probably way more experienced in life then I am, however as one victim(distant) to another of western medicine, realize that Western medicine does not care for your remission as they can’t make a profit off a one-off cure. The tactical scorpion plate did hold up as advertised, it took a bunch of 5.56, 55 and 62gr from an 18" barrel at 20 yards. Took a mag of m80 ball 308 from a c308 at the same distance, I finally punctured it with a 224 valkyrie 55grn solid copper hand load moving about 3200fps. The polish one, kevlar stopped 9mm, .357sig and 5.7 blue tip vmax. The plate stopped 62grn green tips but then failed to stop 55grn 5.56 out of the 18" barrel so I tested it no further. The small increase in velocity was too much for it. The kevlar was really nice tho, ill probably try to get another and just put a better plate in it.

I am an American who moved to Canada. I got my firearms license and bought gear because the mindset doesnt leave just because youre in a new country. I get looks at the range when I go in my plate carrier, warbelt, and combat clothes but I truly believe that I will need this. When I bought my body armor I bought 3+ plates instead of lv 4 because the weight savings were most important to me as well as knowing that Canadians dont have access to anything better than M855 and M80 rounds, in a SHTF situation, the 3+ WOULD be the best option. Knowing that the majority of people up here will not be as equipped as I am, gives me a great feeling of preparedness.

Body armor was a flack vest in the late 70's it was used to line your seat in the UH1 it was rated for a 22lr. Now days I have AWS plate carrier for myself and family Derma plate carrier for the younger ones. I'm an old man now not able keep up with the young guys III+ plates. I'm a static defense now as upper 60's and falling apart health wise. No knees, arthritis in hands and feet. So glad you guys made it thru GWOT as healthy as you are.

When I was in the Marines 83-89 my first flak vest was a Vietnam issue, we got the new stuff in 85, it had no use ! Except to slow projectiles! I now have a crye JPC with level 4 Sapi plates.. love it ! I keep it slick and simple , awesome setup 👍🇺🇸

Love the way you share your experience. A lot of it lines up with my own experience in the great GWOT. I was just a knuckle dragged, but will say I would have killed for a plate carrier, 100%. The gear I wore: chest rigs, attached pouches all depended on the mission. It was an evolution in thinking for me as a young corporal. Command hated and often shit me down, because me and my guys didn’t adhere to their uniform dress right dress. That stuff didn’t work 99% of the time. I wanted to live and not die because the kit was wrong or wore us out. I’ve sold some kit over the years, I wish I hadn’t. Regardless, great info, great video, and I appreciate you for being a great inspiration for so many. Keep on keeping on.

Dayton Armor makes level 4 plates that are insanely light, if I recall correctly each 10 x 12 plate weighs 2.5 lbs. Your gonna pay a premium for them....

They aren't level 4 at 2.5 plates today made of ceramic and uhmwpe Wich for a level for plate unless they invent a magic material is gonna weigh more then that

@@popinmo I did some research and found I was incorrect...what is considered their level 4 plates are 4.5 lbs and their level 3 Alpha are less then two pounds.... Also I've read that Dayton Armor through a 3rd party provides armor to the Varsity team....

It’s awesome to see how different your presentation is from Shawn Ryan 001. I’m definitely gonna look into the plates you briefly mentioned but any civilians looking for plates should definitely check out RMA. The tactical field especially is super difficult to navigate and I’m extremely happy that I did the research beforehand and purchased them. 100% made in Centerville Iowa, full ceramic plates up to lvl 4, sells to civilians, and most importantly are NIJ certified..not “tested to NIJ standards”. It’s a shame to see so many fall for the AR500 steel plates when you can have legit ceramics (the 1155 single curves are heavier than Uncle Sams plates) for the same price.

I was literally about to update my plates last night when I came across this video. Initially was going to buy Hescos L210, then moved to RMA, then seen this video and thought "If Mike is talking about a specific armor, I know he won't sling shit and sell out for some cash" So I ended up ordering me a set of Prime Level IV last night. haha
