- John Yorke has run both BBC and Channel 4 drama as well as working in the Independent sector on dramas including Wolf Hall. He recently returned to the helm at EastEnders.
In this interview, from our Scottish Festival in 2017, he explains why he started working with new writers and some common errors that he sees them make. He also describes how he learnt the basics of story structure - the elements which are common to all stories - and how Shakespeare's works can be used to demonstrate their validity.
The Matthew Robinson & John Yorke years was the best era Eastenders ever had in my opinion. It’s never hit those heights since.
“Every story should have a beginning, middle and end” something the writers at EastEnders NEED to remember and start applying!
Just like real life!
Into The Woods is the book every aspiring Screenwriter needs to read.
I know this is late but I love your channel!
How does his book and what he talks about apply to fiction writing, but not on a screenwriting context (so basically short story and novels writing)?
@@hfvales, I am a novelist and it seems to translate very well.
Yeah if you want to write crap like Eastenders...
I've started listening to Opening Lines, Radio 4, and really enjoying the insight and clarity of John's discussion
I'm most of the way through. So far, it may be the best book on writing of the dozen or more on my shelf. It is easily up there with Story by McKee, but more approachable. A must for any author.
Sorry, what's his book called? I've got 'Writing for television series, serials and soaps' by Yvonne Grace which is brilliant but could certainly do with another one :)
@@jamess5145 Into the Woods, a five act journey into story. Cheers.
Great points. Anyone wanting to see how exposition should be done should watch the first fifteen minutes of Serenity. The movie had to bring new viewers up to speed on the events and background of the TV series without boring those who had seen the series. There's a dream within a recording within a flashback followed by Mal walking through the ship. Every brief exchange with his crew tells you who they are, what they do and how they relate to each other, and everything they say feels natural. The rest of the film is pretty good too...
Aaaaaahhh!
Come back to Eastenders john! We need someone who knows what they are doing!
By theses standards -- true though they are -- Erle Stanley Gardener for Perry Mason, and and the writers of The Philadelphia Story, for stage and/or screen, would be dead in the water :-)
Shame he's 2nd spell at eastenders has been hit and miss
nathan 〈3 football he was infinitely better than the current team in Eastenders who are less hit and miss rather they are one big miss
He is talking about the new writers in eastenders cuz its shit rt nw
cpprice mac damm right! The current team in Eastenders need to go! We need John Yorke back! We need someone like him to pull the show out of the state it is currently in!
