Wow. Thank you. In this case the equipment inspires me to play more accurately, and I still can’t get over how much music you can coax out of this rig. My thanks to EH for bringing this effect in at this price point.
So, I'm thinking "I wonder how a YC sounds through a Lester K... Maybe someone has posted a UA-cam video". In reverse order, the answers are "yes" and "pretty amazing!". Thanks for sharing!
The reface line is Yamaha's portable line that honors it's heritage. The YC 10 was their first portable organ (which explains the red) and it's been updated with different capabilities. I think it's their best sounding Hammond clone ever. Jake
Great paying and great demo. You are truly a Hammond wrangler. I'll have a YC soon, and had been wondering if the Lester (which I own) would take things up a notch; to make it gig-worthy in certain circumstances, rather than just a home noodler. Wow! And your bass sound on the CS is perfection.
Thank you. Since this was recorded I traded in the KW152 for a pair of QSC K12.2's.....they sound amazing. And now I do stereo live as well as in the studio.
Thank you. The ramp down isn’t adjustable and I wanted to see how long it takes. I could have finished my laundry and gone to the bank while waiting. ;)
Darin, I don't run any of my keyboards in stereo. For live applications it's a given. The YC sounds horrible through the headphones out(stereo), but the Lester works quite nicely in mono. Also, my B-3 and Leslie 122's haven't been stereo for 49 years......😀 Thanks for asking. Jake
Thanks for posting the video. I initially didn't like the YC Leslie sim very much when I played it myself - especially on fast speeds with higher drawbars pulled out - but have noticed like you it sounds much much better in mono. (This is isn't necessarily true for other Leslie sims.) I think the difference between the internal sim and the Lester is quite subtle, but I also know that when you play an instrument yourself, the experience can be different.
Kick-ass demo. I feel like the YC's onboard rotary sim is probably "pretty good enough" for a lot of players, including myself, but I do like the range of control I have with, for instance, my BOSS RT-20. Thanks.
Timflan, thanks for the kind words. The refaces are totally fun, and with the Lester K (or any other rotary sim) it's more than playable. Someone just discovered that there's an acoustic grand sample in the CP model. Even Yamaha said it's not in there, but if you boot it up with the selector knob between any 2 instruments it's there. I hope they do a firmware update and make it a selection. Between these two and my CS I could do a streetcorner gig and sound like my full rig! Jake
Thank you. I'm probably going to have to buy another YC in the future because I think I might wear this one out! this little keyboard kills. With the Lester it completes the picture of the ultimate portable Hammond. Jake
Thank you I still can't get over how well this combination sounds. Yamaha's best Hammond emulation and the Lester K simulation really nail it I still try to play these every day
Corey, Since I am a Hammond player I wanted the drawbar tabs to resemble the real deal (the bottom two are brown to represent the 16' and 5 1/3' bars), so I went to Home Depot and bought 2 cans of Krylon spray paint to match, pulled the caps off, painted 2 light coats, and let them dry overnight.....haven't used the paint for anything else! Good eyes, that's a tough angle to see them.
Great idea. Yeah that kind of irked me that the non-octave sliders were the same color as the octave ones. I'm not a hammond player, but it was always obvious to me that the color difference on the hammond sliders was very useful for eyeballing which sliders are which. When I get my reface I think I might do this. thanks!
Timflan - no problems with damage or crazing....I did do 5 light coats and used a hairdryer set on warm to speed up the process, then let it dry overnight. I slam them like crazy and hasn't even chipped. Jake
@@DavidBerglund David, this is just as you see it, no studio enhancement or audio tricks. Straight out of the Lester and into the speaker. Thanks for watching.
Imagine a brand spanking new Hammond B-3 and Leslie 122 fresh off the assembly line back in the late 1950s-early 1960s. No flaws, no bad tubes/transistors, no dying transformers, its keys and pedals all nice and stiff from not being constantly played/abused. This would remind me of that sound.
I remember when mine was delivered to my house....this October she'll be 50. Still plays like the day I got her. A couple of tubes, a busbar rotation, and oiling is all she's ever needed.
Thanks. I find it odd that Yamaha hasn't used this technology in their mainstream keyboards; ie, when I think Hammond or clone, Yamaha isn't my first choice. The Lester just makes it shine. Jake

wow....thank you. I do nerf a lot of keys, but I manage to get most of them right. Playing this makes me more precise on a standard keyboard, so besides trying for accuracy it's just plain fun.
fat fingers+mini keys=disaster. Fortunately, I get more right than wrong. It's great fun to practice on, and when I use full size keys I have a bit more accuracy. Love my YC.
Dude... you sounded great no matter what size keys. All these size-queens hating on mini-keys forget that their weak arguments all fall apart when you see/hear artists like Aphex Twin, Legowelt, Dorian Concept (to name only the most visible on youtube... except for RDJ who made his love of the Yamaha reface DX known via Soundcloud) eating the mini-keys up for fucking lunch. And you never hear them bitching about size. Some of the most legendary kit is limited - it's all about how artists go about choosing to exploit those limitations to their advantage. I say let the haters hate - these Yamaha refaces are unreal for what they are. The cult is small right now... but just wait and see.
Those aren't MIDI - they are part of the Yamaha Reface series (REimagined InterFACE)that pays homage to some of their earlier keyboards. Each one has it's own sound generation onboard so no MIDI needed. Basically a mini organ and mini synth in their own cases.
great points, jake! didn't even think about it really. ... I have a spacestation v3 and am thinking about getting a lester k or g and reface yc....wondering how it would sound out of the spacestation. .....
if running mono, wouldn't the Lester g be better for the keyboard (because of the speed control ramping up and down) or is it a price thing, compression issue, or something?
I didn't think I needed the G because compressed organ kills your dynamics. The swell pedal is a living breathing thing on a real B, so it should also have the same range of expression with a clone. The rise and fall times aren't adjustable, but they're pretty realistic and not a dealbreaker for me.
I'm sure you will enjoy it. It actually breathes like the real thing. I think I'll use a USB fan just to simulate moving air when I kick it into fast speed..........
I was about to buy and then came across the wonderful Hughes & Kettner 'Tube Rotosphere'...Oh My God!! What a pedal. You can even see the valve/tube glowing away warmly. It is so authentic sounding that I just had to get it. And at a very good price too. To say that it's 17 years old it is awesome. Now my 'Ferrofish B4000+ really does sound amazing. Good vibes to all to Hammond Organ and Leslie Speaker Lovers. Sent From Heaven.
The Rotosphere is one of the better simulators. Currently the Ventilator is very popular, but I chose the Lester mainly for bang for the buck. No sim can totally replicate mechanically moving air. Heaven can thank Don Leslie for creating the real deal.
Your best bet is to use your ears....... try to find players you like and copy what they do. Once you have a few licks down change some notes around, phrase a bit differently, and vary the tempo.
