After hearing Sydney Pollack describe Kubrick’s obsession with these commercials, I can’t stop noticing its rather blatant influence on Eyes Wide Shut.
There was a book written turning this couple into a story, which incorporated all the advert stories. It was called “Love Over Gold”. I read it - was quite good.

I just was having a flashback moment of this and had to indulge. I loved these ads. I had no idea there were so many. They played like a mini movie. The chemistry between the actors was incredible. Anthony Head(my beloved Gilles from Buffy) was so gorgeous and sexy.
I remember reading that the man who played her brother was actually the actress's husband, and that Tony stayed with them when he came to America. I could be wrong about all that.
It has to be one of the best adverts the UK ever had - or rather a saga of adverts. There was a simple gripping storyline and it just had people hooked for years.
I find these commercials interesting in era pre-Starbucks, Costa. Coffee shops are everywhere now. I mean everywhere. As a kid cappuccino was an Italian defender. ☕️ 🇮🇹 It’s a very 1980’s success narrative of Filofaxes.

I loved 1:29. It was like he was saying "Keep Your Hands Off Of My Woman, Even Though She's Not Officially". It also reminds me of how Therese Belivet went to find Carol Aird in The Movie Carol.

It's funny how Buffy nailed serialized story telling on TV: the episodes were largely stand alone while linking into a larger narrative where a big story played out over the course of a season, and the popularity of these commercials was due to their serialized narrative. Ripper or not, these commercials are still memorable to those around at the time, and Tony Head's later portrayal of Rupert Giles has little to do with it since most are surprised when they hear who the guy is.
VHS Video Vault, was this ad campaign ever on a VHS? When I looked up "Gold Blend Couple" on Wikipedia, it says there was a "video compilation", but I have not been able to find a VHS in my searches (either for Nescafe Gold or Tasters Choice).
Perhaps they were talking about this ad, which ran on UK TV. I can't remember whether this was the end of the series or whether this compilation was a prelude to a final ad.
I remember these ads being a huge deal when I was a boy. The whole country was seemingly gripped by the saga of the Nescafe coffee lovers.
I don't recall getting all of these stateside. How would I miss it. I was a tv fiend - watched everyday.
