Scooter Brake Fluid 101: A Beginner's Guide to Changing Motorcycle Brake Fluid

- How to change, bleed, and fill brake fluid on a motorcycle or scooter is the same process and very quick and easy. All you need are a few basic tools, 3/16" vinyl tubing, and something to drain the fluid into. My Honda ADV 150 adventure bike requires (recommended) DOT 3 or 4 brake fluid as do most other motorcycles.
In this video I demonstrate the process, and because my brake fluid level was level and clean, I did not have to bleed or fill it. I have low mileage on my Honda, but I wanted to show the procedure regardless because I've had people ask me about this.
NOTE: The rear brake on this bike is a drum and does not require brake fluid because the process is different. You can Google how drum brakes work on motorbikes to learn more about that.
Thanks for watching and I hope this helps you when that time comes!

I said "socket wrench" during the video, forgive me. I meant to say closed-end 8mm wrench. Anyway, you get the idea!
That was EXACTLY what I needed to know. Thank yiu very much for posting!!!! Simple and straight to the point. 👍👍
You're Welcome! ✌🏼
Simple and to the point. Much appreciated
Good to hear! Thank you.
Nicely made and narrated video, thank you.
I'm glad it was useful! ✌🏼
thanks, straight to the point !
Thank you!
Thanks a milli Billy 😅 its been a while since ive dealt with brakes and i needed to because its not safe with only back brakes!!!!! Thanks again for the refresh🎉🎉🎉
NP! Stay safe!
thanks for this excellent and concise tutorial.
Welcome!
Thanks for that! I have a 2023 Wolf Rugby 2. I just got it and it would be great to see some maintenance on them.
I haven't heard of the Wolf line, but they look cool! Seem to be very popular and well-built from what I read. Anything with the word Rugby in it must be tough!
Great video. I guess that you have to do it on both front discs if it has two of them. So bleeding it on each side separately. Thanks for the answer. Cheers.
Yessir! You're correct. On the ADV 150 (US version) the rear brake is drum, not disk. In other countries they have disk front and back. There's more demand for it in other countries because people expect it I feel.
@@Trekopolis I see. :)
Great video thank you
Anytime! ✌🏻
thank you brother its very helpfull !!
Bless you for this .
My brake fluid is leaking i dont know from exactly where
I know where the resovoir is upper right hand side near the throttle it drips down near the ignition to the storage below
I dont know if its the seal or near the banjo bolt
Is it difficult to remove? .i cant seem to find one anywhere .
Please help .
I've never removed anything but the top cover so I wouldn't know exactly. I wish I could provide more. Have you searched the Internet for leaky brake fluid reservoir? I looked at the service manual and there isn't much detail on that. Here's an idea: If you're not a member of this Facebook Group I highly suggest joining and posting your question there. You'll get a lot of feedback from the people who like to tinker on their bikes. facebook.com/groups/266428567756162/ Good Luck and I'm sure somebody will offer suggestions.
Thanks for the video. On scooters with rear drum brakes…does the drum need to be bled or does that use a cable system?
Drum brakes don't use brake fluid, just a cable/camshaft that presses and expands shoes that push outward on the inside of the drum.
Greetings, thanks for the video on ADV150. What does the service manual says about replacing the Fuel Filter on the Honda ADV150? Been scouring the net trying to figure out how to do this. Additionally, a video on how to replace the fuel filter would be much appreciated haha...
Good question. The manual only states to inspect the fuel line every 4k, but doesn't mention replacing the fuel filter unless there are signs of fuel line or loss of pressure. Pressure at idle is noted at 38-46 psi. I'd reckon you'd need a fuel pressure tester to really know. There is a fuel filter, but it's not anything I see needing replaced unless there's problems. At least according to the service manual. I'm curious if any dealer has ever replaced one. 🤔
@@Trekopolis According to friends and ADV groups, the fuel filter needs to be replaced every 20K as the fuel filter can be clogged. Signs that the filter needs replacing includes loss of power. Mine has been 23K, which is why I am curious to know
@@RoyStevenUngKengSoon I'm finding the so called service manual is very limited with information. Doesn't say anything about that. Thanks for the info!
@@Trekopolis needless to say, I'll be on the look out for your "Replace Honda ADV 150 Fuel Filter" videos 😆😆😆😜
@@RoyStevenUngKengSoon Perhaps I'll tackle that one some day! 🤔😉
Does anyone know if my pulse scout need brake fluid
I read yes
Really nice video! Thanks! I have the same brake fluid tank on my Honda, with the same inscriptions. What do you say? I need to refill with brake fluid, but I don't know if it's DOT3 or DOT 4 now in the system... Would it be safe if I add DOT 3&4 type brake liquid? Ride safe! ✌
As I reference the service manual, Honda recommends DOT 4. I don't know what fluid they use at the factory, but the differences between 3 and 4 can be understood more here: www.differencebetween.net/object/auto-object/difference-between-dot-3-and-dot-4-brake-fluids/ Either one should be fine under normal use, but if you have to change it you can use that information to get a better idea!
@@Trekopolis thanks for answering. Well then, I think I will get a bottle of DOT4 , and I will completely change the fluid, by bleeding the system multiple times, just to be sure.
hi bud, easy peasy :) now i heard that the brake fluid can damage the paint, so a towel as you mention would be great. Also maybe some glove as it might burn your skin? I'm not sure i havent deal with the brake fluid. Hey i didnt watch the nfl draft, did i miss anything? take care buddy and thx
And remember, don't drink it cause it resembles the color of beer. That could definitely cause heartburn. 🤔😁 Actually, didn't watch the draft much. Maybe the first couple of picks. Hard to watch kids winning the lottery. (NFL) Must be nice. 🤑
@@Trekopolis agreed
Do I need to bleed it when adding brake fluid?
I don't when I'm simply topping it off or adding a little. If you change it completely then yes, or if there's a chance it gets very low and causes air in the tubing, then I'd bleed them if possible.
@@Trekopolis Actually, its just a little.
so I guess no need for bleeding.
Thank you brother!
Deserve a subs! :)
@Trekopolis Is this ABS?
Only the front, yes.
Can I just add brake fluid without having to bleed it?
Yep! I was showing the bleed mainly for folks who want to replace the entire fluid if it gets older.
thank you for the response✌🏽🙏🏽
If I let it go empty am I in trouble or can I still add and bleed them ?
Brakes could fail so keep the levels checked. You still can add/bleed them, but make sure the pressure is good before riding of course.
@@Trekopolis thank you for the reply I will make sure to do that before I ride agin
Hey, I tried this, but the fluid keeps on squirting out while I'm pumping the brakes, is that normal?
From the top? If so secure the top lid and pump out fluid until it runs new through, then add more to top as needed to bleed until you see new oil exit tube near brake.
@@Trekopolis thanks, i tried that but there is still no brake pressure
Make sure the seal is good on the top fluid cap reservoir and close the bleed valve and pump the lever to check pressure after the fluid drains with no bubbles or air. If there's still no pressure you may have a leak somewhere else like a cable or connection. Also be sure to use the proper fluid so it's not too thin like standard oil. Just making sure. :) @@jabzziijbz69
🤔 So simple even I can do it?
My guess is yes! 😉
Actually ,you should not use Phillips head screwdrivers on Japanese bikes as the screws a JIS ,Japanese industry standard.
This is why so many people destroy the screws on their bikes.
Thanks for the info!
Truth. These are JIS 'plus' heads and a Phillips head will destroy the heads on these screws, especially if they are weathered.
