Conga Master Joe Frost - The Sweetest Feel on Rumba Quinto

  • Joe Frost was known for his sweet song on the quinto, the high-pitched solo drum in Afro-Cuban Rumba music. "Joe Jams" were renown throughout the Chicago and Phoenix areas for smokin' hot conga sessions. This is a nice stripped-down Rumba Guaguanco that really showcases Joe's sweet feel for the quinto.
For Joe, it was all about the rhythm. We never played for dancers and rarely had singers. It was always all about the song of the quinto.
    Masterful hands and beautiful spirit.
    Scott Nicolow, conga drums.
    Denni Mobbs, clave (off camera).

When you look eachother in the eyes while playing it's just pure love and energy flowing through your body. The rythm connects you, flows through your veins and creates pure joy.

if any instrumentalist were to study this man’s rhythmic dictionary and time flow they could take over the game

Now we're on the same page (just in case we weren't). His time flow is/was like no other. I've searched the globe, and can't find anyone with such splendid feel. I witnessed many first hand including Giovanni. I am always just as impressed with Giovanni and other drummers with insane chops, as I am with body builders. Cool man, how many hours/days/months/years did you beat on a piece of wood (life a weight) to get like that? You sure are fast (buff), but you ain't got no feel!

Why the quinto is lower than the two tumbadoras used for the rhythm?

We almost never had singing or dancing at Joe Jams. And definitely not rumba dancers. Joe sang on the quinto. I've hung with others who do the whole shebang with Spanish songs and the traditional dances. I much prefer what we did with Joe. His lyrics are on the quinto.

Los Cubano no vemos la música como el resto del mundo.
Quizás porque es nuestra cultura musical.
Aunque nos guste lo que otros tocan aunque lo hagan mal jijiji 😜
