Brian May is a GOD of orchestration guitar playing....to me, his best solo was in Live Kilers album

He found a really coo way to get that big orchestral sound from just one guitar! Is there another one or these cool delay-lead solos on the album???

Right on! Brian's "Brighton Rock" solo! That's exactly what I wanted. Thank you. Nice work on it, too, Jack! Awesome. I enjoyed this new video much more than your prior one on May. I liked that one, too, but this one killed it.
At 10:15 you mentioned that mistakes get repeated on a delay. That footage I am almost certain was filmed in 1978. Funny, around that time back then, Brian told reporters that every show, he at least missed one note, and got forced to hear it 3 times. Also noteworthy is that Freddie Mercury used a similar delay on his mic for "Now I'm Here", "Get Down Make Love", "Prophet's Song", and a few other songs.
You mentioned Thin Lizzy. Funny, I saw that band open for Queen a year earlier in 1977, so it's possible that's the influence. Although, I seem to recall that Brian performed that soloing prior to then.

Awesome, really glad to hear it mate!
Haha, I think most of us who've used delay live have probably suffer through that ordeal- good to know that even Brian May had to endure it!
Aw, man what an awesome bill that would be!

I hear Brian mention Tin Lizzy as an influence. I didn't know where specifically and here it is! I loved your analysis!

How something sounds is key to Brian's sound. I read that on "We Will Rock You" he recorded the stomps and claps, and then when he bounced them he didn't want the to phase. So, he ran a program using prime numbers to time them so they would sound enough out of phase to sound real and bigger. I just love the idea of a guy writing a program on punch cards to run through Imperial College's main frame to make certain stomps and claps would not phase. I loved your analysis. Now, let's go back to members of Queen (particularly Roger Taylor) complaining about the length of Brian's solos! I want to yell, but that's why I came!

To me Brian's most exquisite guitar riffs were done on two songs. First one White Queen at Hammersmith, and Don't Try So Hard on the Innuendo album, absolutely fantastic. Liked your review.

JBF< My main problem is the delay always comes back to haunt me because I can never get those 3rds or 6ths to ALIGN up right to get that brian may harmonized sound. Its really hard for me to play a 4 note phrase and then play an interval of the 4 note phrase a "3rd below" just like how Brian may does without it clashing and sounding like a mess. For me this is really hard to do because you have to time it right. It would be real nice to make a video lesson on just focusing on playing a phrase and then playing the 3rds or 6ths after to make it harmonize good, its much harder to do than it looks.

You're spot on Wayne, it's all about nailing that timing. As a quick start guide I'd:
Work out a harmony line (or just use one of these)
      Put on a metronome
Set the delay to match it (say a 1/4 note of something)
Play along with the click for a while (to get a feel for the rhythm)
Make sure to tap your feet along with it
then try turning off the metronome
I'm trying out the 'shorts' formats, so I'll pop using a delay pedal on my list of ideas, see if I can create something on it 🤘

@@JbfMusicGuitar The hard part is the "delay time setting" lets say 800mS the phrase line has to be played in 400mS and then the harmony line phrase (3rds below) is played in 400ms to = 800mS total. If you don't ALIGH the phrase with the stacked harmony line phrase WITHIN the 800mS its going to sound like a messy cluster of notes clashing very messy. The hard part is ALIGNING the phrase with the harmony phrase 3rd below to make it harmonize like brian may did.

@@waynegram8907 Yeah for sure, keeping in time will make all the phrases line up!

Does Brian own one guitar? Or does he own a bunch of guitars that are exactly the same?

    • @JbfMusicGuitar
      @JbfMusicGuitar  Рік тому

I think his dad made the original, but I'm pretty sure he'll have duplicates of it, all the same spec. I could be wrong, but it would be so risky to just have one copy of that guitar and go touring with it!
