Either Ronnie B as a prophet and didn’t know it lol or the looney liberal leftists stumbled on it and thought ‘mm, the new normal’, or both!! Here in 2023 the likes of Lia Thomas who because HE says HE’s a SHE thinks he’s perfectly entitled to enter women’s swimming competitions, blow everybody else out of the water and then stroll into the women’s changing rooms with HIS junk hanging out!!! Insane perversion, not forgetting the criminal in Scotland who at trial all of a sudden decided HE was a woman and DEMANDED to be placed behind bars at a WOMEN’S prison and subsequently played a part in Sturgeon’s downfall! 🤔😆

"They'll stay in a nudist colony.. and air their differences" lol.. Barker, at his best.. Without doubt, one of the best comedy sketch writers of all time.. The subtle way he slipped in the 'members only' double entandre, (considered edgy for a 70's primetime family show) was pure, blink and you'll miss it, Ronnie Barker...

That's because, despite what most people think, political correctness isn't something that was invented 10 or 20 years ago. The shift towards gender neutral language in the workplace (such as chairman to chairperson) is something that's been happening since women started getting equal rights in the workplace.
Most of the other stuff in this sketch is just silly jokes. Sure, some people like to get worked up imagining other people getting worked up over silly things, such as renaming Manchester to Personchester or removing all references to gender in film titles. But most people know that such things would be absurd; only the furthest fringe of the left would even dream of championing such a cause. Even the renaming of manholes, which I will genuinely credit this sketch with predicting, was only implemented in one city back in 1990 or something.
My point is that people these days paint political correctness is some kind of vast, all-powerful creature that all must obey. It's really not. We should see it like they did back in the '70s; as just a loose bunch of ideas put around by an even looser collection of individuals. The good ideas we'll accept, and the bad ideas we'll mercilessly mock on a successful BBC comedy show.

I'm a bit late to reply, but Get Smart made a very similar joke to this, and so did The Munsters, Gilligan's Island, F Troop... In fact, it was almost a staple in American comedy, to make fun of guys in drag or to make fun of women being in men's shoes or men being in women's shoes. The Get Smart one about Gertie-Jerry was especially funny, about a half-man, half-woman employed as a freak in a circus.
"My hobbies are weight-lifting and embroidery."
"What do you think about diamonds?"
"Diamonds? Pah, who needs them. Well... they do have a certain charm! In fact, Larry the Midget proposed to me with a diamond engagement ring just last week."
      "Did you accept?"
"Are you kidding? With him around?" /points to the "jerry" side/
now, if that isn't an under-the-radar joke about transgenderism, I don't know what is :P
Though, on American TV you wouldn't be able to say words like "boobs", "hell" or "damn", at least, not until the 70's, but even then it wasn't treated lightly. Get Smart got away with saying "Satan's Place" lol
