Depending on the specific plastic that your container is made of, Acetone (or the Acetone portion of the 50/50 ATF mix) will often (but not always) slowly evaporate through the plastic.
If you're going to go through the risk and danger of making off with The Mrs's nail polish remover then go for the Full Goose Maneuver and keep the remover / ATF mix in that remover bottle (and just use the Acetone's original container for bulk storage.
Acetone "eats" many plastics - just like Gasoline does when you pour it on Styrofoam. Because of that it's a good idea to NOT allow this mix to touch plastic, rubber or paint.
Great series you two! I'm watching every one. Joe S

    • @stevenmark8156
      @stevenmark8156 Рік тому

True. But obviously it doesn’t eat the plastic that the nail polish remover comes in. That bottle would be a good one to mix the ATF into to keep. You could keep refilling it out of an Acetone can.

Hey Steve. Rob Fadelle here, back on the East Coast. I recall us using Kroil at Tom's back in the days I was out in Nanaimo. I recall Paul having issues with a mower blade on a push mower. So two of us tried with a three foot bar, me holding the mower and using one hand to pull with Paul. It wouldn't move. We soaked it with Kroil as it was the end of the day. Next morning we went back to the same positions and when we pulled, it popped lose so easily we almost threw ourselves to the floor. Fun times :)

It was great to hear what you homemade recipe is. There is a recipe for a gun bore cleaning fluid that has been around since WWII. It's called Ed's Red bore cleaner. Very Similar.
1 part Dexron Automatic Transmission Fluid, GM Spec. D-20265 or later.
1 part Kerosene - deodorized, K1 (such as for burning in heaters)
1 part Aliphatic Mineral Spirits (Varsol)
    1 part Acetone

I tried several other penetrating oils but I use what I’ve been using since I was a kid. That would be Liquid Wrench in the can, although now it’s a plastic squeeze bottle. It’s cheap and you can apply it directly where you need it instead of wasting it like aerosol sprays do.

Relax Bud, I was just joking around. I've never used it myself but someone told me how expensive it was. I just think it's hilarious that so many people waste so much money on wd40 etc. Diesel works just as well and Kerosene. I've used 5w30 too.
Another good one is compressed air tool oil. It's like a friend once said WD 40 only works when you add a good wrench.
If I have stubborn nut I torch the bastard first with a propane bottle. I've never taken apart a nut where I can see wd40 has actually penetrated past the rust. The whole concept is just BS.

We used all types in the penetrating sprays in the oil fields.
Kroil, pb blaster, cheap lubricant sprays, like on amazon, w-mart. Kroil used on heavily rusted bolts, expensive comp ared to the ATF and acetone. I bet you could put that into a spray bottle for use in certain situations. Just dont breathe the vapor or mists. Stay upwind in a well ventilated area. I have heard of this home made mix, but have not used it.

Just to add to April and Steve's great video, Engineering for Change (Drezel Team), conducted the experiments on this subject in 2012, and found that acetone combined with any vegetable oil was as good as using ATF, which can have some nasty chemicals in it.
The actual ideal formula they found to be best was using 87.5 percent vegetable oil and 12.5 percent
    acetone.....The acetone evaporates quickly....
I have experimented with olive oil and acetone, and found that repeated sprays using 30 percent vegetable oil and 70 percent acetone worked best for me if I did the soakings over an hour or so....However is you going to leave it on for longer periods of time, I believe the Drezel Teams finding of 87.5 oil to 12.5 acetone is probably good.......
You can bring up the study with a simple search.

I'll agree the best penetrating fluid is ATF+Acetone. In terms of store-bought stuff, the best I've found is XPS (made by BRP - Bombardier). It's rather expensive but it's excellent if you live in a high-humidity area like I do. I'd say the next best would be PB Blaster.

I buy PB by the gallon and refill my squirter bottle. It's that much cheaper the math works.
For big bolts May be 1/2 inch and up. That I know will be corroded. I rub beeswax on the threads before assembling. But if it's stuck. I heat with a torch and melt the beeswax on it and let it lube.the threads. Then a big cheater bar and 6 point socket.
I've used kroil it's ok for smaller bolts and things needing cleaned up like knozzles

Interesting recipe! PB Buster or blaster has always been my go to. It stinks but is effective. I learned about PB from my late Step father who was a mechanic.
You are correct about Acetone having a high evaporation rate though, I used to use it alot for mixing analine powders (colors) in the furniture repair business. It was actually called wilpro, I believe it was a mixture of Acetone and mineral spirits.
Once you made the color you had to apply quickly because of the evaporation rate. Acetone is used in a lot of ways with certain materials. It will eat any paint finish, foams, adhesives and more.

Pb blaster has more lubricant, but wd 40 loosens rusty stuff much better. Any oil and acetone works well. Introducing vibration always helps no matter what is used as penetration fluid. The red stuff Steve preferred sprayed on a polished welded part, wiped down, then dusted with cornstarch can reveal cracks as red lines.

I always used to use good old WD-40, and don't have anything bad to say really, but I read an article on PB Blaster one time and it stated how great it was. I found a multi pack of it and haven't ran out yet.
And you're right. I'm sure my home made penetrating oil container is now basically 100% ATF. It's in one of those metal oil containers with the little pump lever. Not very air tight.
