Koichi Tohei after the Founder was the best practitioner of Aikido in any form. I was privileged to train with Tohei Sensei and miss his teaching the actual martial art of Aikido. After two sessions with Tohei, he left no doubt in my mind his speed and skill were magical but real. As the 70’s progressed Aikido became secondary and today the real art is almost lost. For whatever reason, Aikido seems more of a way of life and on the mat it’s a ballet dance. This is an art - but no longer a martial art. I miss the old Tohei right out of Japan. Fast. Snaps. Strong.
I can watch later. In 1977 I was sitting with magazines and comic books at the Wailuku Public library, Maui, and an entire second-grade ( 7 y.o.) class filed into the main reading room. Behind them was Koichi Tohei, who spoke little English. What he taught in that one hour was magical and impossible. I won't type the story right now. He said: "Four principles of aikido - Breath! Posture! Point (center of mass, center of consciousness, ki)! and...Extend Self. This may or may not align with the above talk. Tohei had established a school and dojo in Wailuku and those kids and I were privy to an astounding demonstration on the master's part. He explained and showed the kids how to extend self into infinity and one child held his arm out to practice this notion. Tohei proceeded to SIT ON THE KID'S ARM for a few seconds. I was hooked for life. I'll be back. Yes, this was my intro to aikido, the Way of Harmony, the Way of Love.
