Can a Rattlesnake Climb Over a Block Wall? NO!

  • Whenever we talk about Rattlesnake Fencing, we get comments saying it can't possibly work because rattlesnakes can just climb over the wall. Well ... let's see if they can!
We put it to the test with every species of rattlesnake in our service area, along with a couple of non-venomous snakes. According to the comments, all of them should be able to climb the wall and escape without any trouble. But what actually happened isn't a surprise to anyone with a bit of knowledge of how snakes work.
Rattlesnakes can climb a tree, up rough stone, and other sufficiently rough surfaces, but going up smooth surfaces isn't something they are capable of. If the wall has big problems, like an uneven surface or other ledges, then this is considered part of the rattlesnake fence design. What no rattlesnake can do, however, is climb right up a wall like a slug.
Why does it matter? Because knowing how this works can prevent rattlesnake bites. Knowing what can keep a rattlesnake out of an area is not snake trivia ... it's about keeping people, pets, and wildlife safe.
Here is our supplementary video of the experiment, as described in the video:

Very interesting. When I built the vents and access cover for my ground set mobile, I relied heavy on the RS suggestion of a pencil or 1/8” as the largest opening. No rattlesnakes under the house so far.

    Well done, Bryan.
    Interesting & informative, as always.
This video makes me want to get a video of my self, "trying to climb" the block wall that surrounds our small backyard.
Oh, wait, we do have cacti, large plants, & some very large, mature volunteer trees that extend some branches over the fence.
We are definitely in rattlesnake country, & if any danger noodle wants to wriggle across the front (desert landscaped) yard, they are quite welcome.
    😊

I grew up in the desert outside Tucson and, in our small mining community, never heard a single incident of a snake encounter in a yard. As the cities spread and reduce the homefront for these beautiful creatures, people must also take the responsibility to ensure that their footprint doesn't further endanger the wildlife, including snakes. Thanks for all you do!

Can "a snake" climb over a wall? Heck yes...Rat snakes are great climbers. Bull/Gopher snakes can climb.
Can a RATTLESNAKE climb over a wall? Nope.
The trouble is that people can't or won't bother to tell the difference between a RATTLESNAKE or any other snake. They see a snake...ANY SNAKE...and see a rattlesnake.

Where I live, *everything* is a "moccasin", "ready to strike". There have been problems with cottonmouths in the area in the past, but these days, it's copperheads (which are actually pretty rare). Nothing with a rattle, nothing that's red-on-black-friend-to-jack, but I'm convinced that either of those would be called a "moccasin" with the tribal accompaniment of "Grab a garden tool and do your worst!"

"Well, you've heard of 'Escape Rooms'. We've got 'A Snake Room' here." They'd probably have better luck with a real Escape Room, and I had a good chuckle about the thought that someone would believe that the snakes had somehow been trained to perform.

I live in Kentucky and have copperheads and Timber rattlesnakes on my property and occasionally they come in the yard. I also bring black rat snakes and racers to the house and the occasional hog nose snake . I consider them all part of the natural habitat and useful for rodent control. The only ones that can climb a block wall are the rat snakes. I have even turned rat snakes loose in my basement to catch mice. I also think that the smell of a snake is like mouse repellent.

Damn, this is a really cool video. Snakes scare the shiz out of me for some reason if I'm honest but I'm loving learning about them from your channel. One thing I was thinking about this particular experiment is that I'm curious about the performances between species. Specifically, the ones that you said had more experience with terrain that requires more climbing skills. Those seemed to not really try to get out very hard or seem to perform well, I wonder if that's because of their experience and/or innate understanding of climbing. Much like we might try to climb a tree but not scale a flat wall face, maybe they just knew they wouldn't be able to climb that and gave it a couple hail mary attempts before deciding not to waste energy. I dunno but it's very interesting and I love how you're showing and disproving these kinds of myths. I remember you did one about snakes chasing and displayed how they were really just seeking cover. I've lived in AZ for about 5 years now and still haven't seen a rattler in the wild unfortunately but they seem to be less prevalent down here in Sierra Vista. Thanks for putting this video together, I really enjoyed it

I have a picture of a snake (not even sure what species) climbing up a window (taken from the inside), or attempting to at least, of my childhood home in central Illinois. It was a closer in length to that gopher snake though, and we interrupted it before it could investigate further.

Ok, but none of those rattle snakes had their utility belts. If they had their freaking grappling hooks they would have been out of there. Not a fair test given that all rattlesnakes have utility belts. :/
This was seriously so entertaining. The gopher snake looked like someone playing snake on their Nokia. Really specific, almost angular movements. It wasn't only interesting to see all of them try to problem solve, but also to see how differently they all moved.

I've seen rattlers up in trees.....it took me a while to figure out how tye got up there without climbing. The area wS fairly flat but it was a year round creek that had cut thru the bottom of the can yon and over years hat created bluffs along the north side of the creek. Trees and brush had grown the 20 ft up to the level of t h e bluff. My theory is the s are began up on the lev e l of tge bluff and simply crawled I tocthe top branches of the tree I order to get to baby birds in a nest. Every time I would walk under t h e tree the snake rattled. I thought it was a gopher snake until I Saw it was a 4 foot rattler . ..we watched it ..put a video camera on aimed at the top of the tree. Hours later we witnessed it moving back to the edge of the bluff and leave the alder tree! I talked with an arborist who sa I d he had often wondered
How these snakes were often in oaks and Alders. Not a surprise he enjoyed 50 ft in the air! He said my theory wor k s f o r him ...he is more careful along trees lining creeks ...and that's where he iz surprised most often. HE expects kings and gopher and racers...and for 10% of the time is more cautious after experiencing a total of 5 rattlers in 7 years! Northern Pacific ... and they are getting larger ! 3 ft adult is common ...4 ft 8 is a bizarre top measurement x 3 of road kill x 2 yrs in the hills surrounding the Napa Valley.

That Southwestern Speckled Rattlesnake ( Above Average Size ) I wonder if it is also maybe because it is Kinda of a heaver snake ? Those Baby Rattle snakes I thought for SURE they would try to get out or would get out where the cracks are in the middle of the wall. I also thought they all might try to get out by using the cracks. I was thinking they would get out by going under the wall where the cracks are. I am glad you done this video. Now if some one says they can climb Over a Block wall, I will know what to say and believe. That Gopher snake, are they kinda like a Black Snake on what they eat ?
