@@R3LAX94 The US could have won VN and made VN become the US's ally but the thing is, being an ally to any country will only put VN in a much more difficult position in the modern day. The main problem is all about the Military aspect, any big 3 countries putting a military base in VN will be the same as declaring war on the others.
So VN goes neutral, and that's also why VN needs independence at all costs, VN will work as a business partner to all countries but never an ally in the military in any form.

My father & I took my Vietnam War veteran grandfather to Washington D.C. several years ago for the 1st time for him to see The Vietnam War Memorial Wall. He was drafted in the late 1960s & he got injured by shrapnel from a land mine (in addition to getting shot), so he got sent home & received a Purple Heart. However, 6 of his buddies didn't make it back home, so before the trip he made a list of all of their names & where they were located on The Wall. As he found each on the wall, he got very emotional knowing that he managed to come home (though injured), get married, have 3 sons, & live another 50 years, but 6 of his friends didn't.

Also, I want to add sth. In 1965, there was an American anti-war activist named Norman Morrison that set himself on fire at the Pentagon in order to protest the US involvement in this war. This action was considered to be inspired by the monk in the previous video named Thich Quang Duc.
