- She was a star in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Her first role was in Max Reinhardt's A Midsummer Nights Dream in 1935. She signed a deal with Warner Brothers and appeared in some of their most important films of the thirties including Captain Blood and, of course, The Adventures of Robin Hood. Her role has Melanie in Gone with the Wind brought her her first Oscar nomination. She lost that year to Hattie McDaniel but that didn't stop her form winning two Oscars later in her career. Her name was Olivia de Haviland and with her death at the age of 104 we've lost our last living connection to the Golden Age of Hollywood. To Honor her, John and Steve have recorded a new introduction to one of their favorite episodes, The Adventures of Robin Hood with special guest, Joe Mantegna.

The Reinhardt /Dieterle "Midsummer" is one of my favorite movies.
Love this film. OdH and EF had great chemistry
I Loved Olivia de Haviland,she was so beautiful classy I Loved Maid Marion.
I 1rst time I saw Robin Hood was on the Movie show on TV called Family Classics Hosted by Frazier Thomas Sundays 3PM CT on WGN-TV Ch9 Chicago just like your guest did.
She is magnificent in "The Heiress", for which she had to fight, as they thought she was too beautiful for the role. The movie is perfection, as an adaptation, as an ensemble, and as a punch to the gut to the audience.
Rathbon'es in "Captain Blood", too. He has (another) great duel with Flynn.
Great duel. It's interesting to watch the duels back to back, seeing how much Flynn improved.
Great episode. You should do another of Olivia's movies, one of her Oscar winning roles.
Also, please do an episode on "The Mark of Zorro". The duel between Tyrone Power & Basil Rathbone is one of the top 3 movie swordfights, imo.
