What if you just have a blue blob sitting at the bottom?

What about the red clumps floating in the sample? Do you ad reagent until they turn blue or just the water?

The purple dots are formed when the indicator is added and the pH of the sample is high. What you are seeing is magnesium hydroxide forming as these little dots. Their presence will NOT interfere with the normal red to blue color change

What if it takes 30 drops for it to turn blue

How can I test for magnesium in the water ? As this calcium hardness test would include magnesium in the total hardness and needs to be subtracted from the total (I think?)

Hi! This test only shows the result for calcium hardness and not magnesium hardness. We have test kits that test for both total and calcium hardness (K-1514). You can then take the total hardness result and subtract the calcium hardness result to get the magnesium hardness result.
