This is heartwrenching. It touches me, as a multiracial person with slavery and indentured servitude in my ancestral bloodline. It is awful that real people had to ensure this type of life. As much as we don't like to hear these accounts brought to life the awareness needs to be shared and these stories of these lost lives need to be appreciated. It is sad that there were so many people that believed they had the right to own a person and treat them in such a way. People like Maggie and others made it possible for us in the world today. Thank you for bringing Maggie and her story to life.
@@Yarncandybycherie yes . It is sad and aggravating, anger inducing, that people could think they had the right to treat human beings as property. Those choices by those men all those years back are still affecting the relationships between races today . I started this video and 40 min. into it, i realized that the entire family; silently gathered behind me and had been watching and listening to this woman. From the 8 year old to 18 year old, and the wife. All 7 of them, and not a word was spoken, no fussing, just intense listening... When the candle was blown out at the end, my oldest girl said "and what do we have to complain about...nothing"......
Update: oldest daughter told me that she insisted that her history teacher play this for the class today. She also said that they all really enjoyed (as much as you can enjoy this poor womans story) the video. There is something to be said about capturing the attition of a class of freshman.....lol...
@@christopherstalter449 Thanks again.... this is exactly who we love to reach out to. Ask your daughter to tell her entire class that Maggie says hello!
As heartbreaking as this tale was, it was performed in a masterful way. Many times I had to stop ,and actually remind myself that this was a reenactment. I cannot fathom the horror and sorrow these people had to endure. Again, I must applaud the two reeanctors on their performance, and thank them for creating a tangible way to experience an often overlooked part of history. Thank you for sharing your talent with us!
Carol needs her own channel - or at the very least her own theatre. I hope she's paid better than what the usual reenactors are paid. She's just outstanding. Better than Hollywood.
Not gonna lie the second she said, "Dia duit." I responded in kind, "Dia is muire duit." And my heart broke for us both as she was told off for speaking it. I understand the historical realism but it still hurt...
for sure, This Maggie Delaney character was so well done, and unfortunately encompassed so much of the suffering of the indentured.... and imagine, for practically nothing, you could be 'transported' and suffer the same, for nothing. I remember seeing some cartoons as a kid about the Aussie's transported away for nothings..... and they were treated thus as well..... no wonder they have that ingrained toughness.... not only the climate, and the hardships there, but also for the servitude forced upon them..... horrible thing in history, but should never ever be forgotten..... this was a perfect presentation in my view.
I’m not an emotional man nor a sensitive man , but this woman’s story brought a tear to my eyes . I’m still confused how people can treat others like this , even to this day in many parts of the world this is someone’s story .
This was an absolute pleasure. I have a matriarchal ancestor that was difficult to trace back in 1690s because she came to the colonies list as just cargo. She was an indentured servant.
I wish I could be there in person for when Carol does her pieces. She’s so amazing it’s scary. As Hawaiians, I think we would say she’s got Kupuna/Elders/Ancestors whispering their lives into her ear.
My heart went out to this family and others just like them. I think of my forefathers who sailed here from other countries. I never realized that they could of gone through this. This woman made this so real to see her heart broken as her children passed or took them to work on other farms. To never see her sons again is heart breaking. God bless them all
Read "The Rat Pit" by Patrick MacGill. Which, while it occurs in the early 20th century, illustrates why you could understand why people would consider signing themselves to an indentured service contract. Ireland was worse still when Maggie would have signed her contract...
This actually had me tearing up a few times. Gosh . They were slaves with a different name. No kind of slavery was ever ok. This performance was so amazing that I could've sworn that I was actually listening to Maggie herself. Bravo!! Applause!!! Beautiful and heartbreaking.
This video should be MANDATORY viewing for students studying American History! Amazing story, told by an even more amazing woman! Tears racing down my cheeks.. How did they survive? My heart goes out to all who gave so much, so we could be here, where we are today
The part about indentured servants running away is why the African trade began to take over. This video could also be called, "When the Irish Weren't White."
To this day I'm still truly surprised this doesn't have more views. Every time I think about watching it I tell myself I'm only going to watch like 10 minutes, but the hour goes by instead, and I'm lucky to have been allowed along for the story. Carol, you have just made these people, long dead and easily forgotten, be alive again just for a while; these people are real through Maggie's story. My heart is broken for our past, for THEIR past.
No words...I’m sitting here shaking with emotion and can scarcely see thru the tears to write this. When indentured servants are even mentioned in history class it’s treated like it was no big deal.
"I'll just watch a little before bed." An hour later, and now I feel kind of hollow inside. Which speaks to the beauty of her storytelling, but it's just so sad what we're willing to do to our fellow man.
I forgot halfway through that this was a made up character! I was completely sucked in. Eye opening and heart wrenching. Our ancestors were brave beyond comprehension. Thank you so much Carol this was incredible and thank you townsends for featuring her!
Just want to add that "Maggie" brought me to tears more than once. Her emotion and acting is top notch. Also her "master" in the background worked very well as comic relief. Can't say it enough. Awesome. Townsend's is the best channel on UA-cam!
I'm Irish and I am so incredibly moved by this performance. This chapter of my country's history was brought to life for me here in Maggie's story. What an amazing performance. Thank you for this.
Every person enjoying the freedoms of life in the United States should see this. Thank you for such quality and depth in sharing this amazing re-enactment.
O my goodness how my heart aches for Maggie. If this were a true story, and I’m sure most situations were, I can’t fathom how she endured with no hope left. How Blessed we are to be a free people. She is an excellent actor. She brought to life the ways a bond servant may have made it to the colonies to eventually be free. My people are of Scotch/Irish decent. I’m sure some of my people may have been brought over on a ship, may have been in the belly of the ship also. Makes me appreciate the toughness of a stubborn people.

If you love History you really need to Watch Carol L. Jarboe's portrayal of Maggie Delaney, and 18th Century Indentured Servant. I have known Frank and Carol for several years and love their different portrayals and characters. Most of all when they are just themselves. This is an outstanding Video. Thank you Jon for producing this outstanding video.
Wow, wow, wow! As a thespian with a BS in Educational Theatre, I am so impressed with that production! Thank you so much for that. I hope to see more in the future
Part of my own family came here as an indentured servent. I had no idea it was so hard for many. Fortunetly he not only worked through his service but managed to learn a trade and enough money to buy property. That was prior to the Mayfield so my family has been here a very long time.
This was beyond amazing! I cried at so many points, especially about the children. How is this not commonly known within history!?! I love Maggie! Please, please, please continue more of these. Encore! Encore! 😍😍😍😍
I wept listening to this. Even knowing that it’s a re-enactment, even knowing that I could turn it off and go about my day at any moment if I so chose...my heart was touched. Thank you, Maggie Delaney...thank you
This is by far the most intense and meaningful UA-cam “content” I have ever had the chance to view. Thank you to all involved in creating this for all of us to view and learn from.....
Dear Carol, your performance is uncanny and I'd vote you an oscar if I had such power. But more important is the gift you give to us: to realize the importance of these often forgotten histories of oppressed people. I pray we find the goodness in ourselves to fight injustice like this, because the evil of greed and cruelty is still with us today. And thank you, Townsends, this is exactly the kind of exploration that makes your channel a cut above the average youtube video. Kudos.
Whoever added the bird sounds was genius for putting video in moment of Maggie telling the story to someone. (And toning down the seriousness of it for people to easier handle.) Great Job!
I am speechless with tears rolling down my face. My Irish descendants went through so much and this puts it all into words and feelings and took me to me being right there with her.. Losing her children and her husband. Thank you for this. I honestly will be spending St Patrick's day remembering my heritage and the journey of my ancestors.
Heart wrenching, my own ancestors a family of 5 came from Ireland as indentured servants in 1683. I now have a much better understanding of what they must of went through.
I first watched this on UA-cam, but then bought the DVD (with the accompanying music CD) so I would always have it. All I can say is Carol Jarboe has created a character and life story that goes straight to your heart (and soul). She is a true treasure and I truly thank Jon Townsend for introducing her to us! Oh, and the music CD is also stellar - and remember, buying the set through the Townsends website also supports Jon's work, maybe you should buy a copy too! 😊
Please do not stop doing what you do, I cried so many times during this, throwing Us in a story that I'm sure is true in many ways... Looking at my three babies from 13 to almost 8, looking at my Husband, doing what a Man can do for his Family taking a risk for Freedom or a better life. As We all look at our lives in the States Now, How Lucky we are, how lucky indeed. Give your loved ones hugs, tell them you love them, stand up for what you believe in, for when we do thing's from our heart is when we truly live.
I just discovered video yesterday and absolutely think it’s amazing what she’s doing. I finished her interview about creating Maggie a few minutes ago and had to come back to this video to rewatch it a second time while I clean. And she is right, the reason I loved this so much was because she brought out the raw emotions, pain, and suffering that history books or teachers don’t touch on. Does anyone know anymore videos like these? I would really love to see more stuff like this. Someone acting out voices and emotions from people who lived way before us. I would love to see other scenarios all around the world, different backgrounds and races. If anyone can help I’d be very thankful
Magnificent story and acting. I was captivated and heartbroken for Maggie. Her strength and story were the lost stories of so many of our forebearers. Bravo
Yes! Oh, my god. This was the absolute finest Living History production I can ever imagine. The education it offers is unmatched by anything I know with its reach and richness. Kudos to all involved and please consider making as many stories such as this as could be possible.
Oh they could and did take that land away. My family went west, homesteaded, took 180 acres of that free land. Held it for a while, until it was hindering the growth of the city, or so we were told when given next to nothing for it. There's a street sign with my family name marking the street we once lived on. There are even still houses standing on that street that were built by my family, some going back to the 1880s. I'm now the 6th generation of my family in my home town. We were here before it was a state, when the land was free, for a while at least.
fartzinwind The elitists who run the world do everything they can to make sure no one gets anything. And the gov't has a history of taking back what was supposedly given. Just like they want us to believe that the oil barons were just regular folk who got lucky and struck that "black gold" when, if you research the genealogy, you find all the family connections to the "black nobility" and the thirteen bloodlines. Basically, they ran off and murdered anyone whose land was discovered to be valuable. All our history has been engineered.
This makes me so happy. Seeing someone keeping history alive with this level of dedication is just fantastic. I really enjoy these! Thank you SO much... after watching Silla (Brenda Parker) I went back to Mt. Vernon and loved it just that much more.
Amazing story, acting, filming and production. Is there a film venue you can submit this to.....Sundance or similar? The talent and the story should be recognized by the widest audience possible. To all involved thank you so much for creating this.
I got to meet "Maggie" today!!! She was at the Colonial Market Days event in Lebanon, Indiana! I had to come back to this video and watch it again as soon as I got home. This performance gives voice to all those in the past whose names have been lost to time, whose stories are untold. It's funny-- I KNOW I'm watching a video, I KNOW Maggie is a character, but just a few minutes into the video and it really seems like you're hearing an actual voice from the past, and you get kinda lost in the story. Thank you for putting so much time and effort into your craft, for us all to enjoy. 🙂
I don't know how you pulled off this amazing video. The actors are flawless. The format was original. And Maggie. The actress who portrayed her should be nominated. She held me in the palm of her hand and made me cry. Well done.
I've had to put off watching this until now, when I had a quiet hour to spend on it, plus some extra time after to cry because I knew that was coming. This is AMAZING. Kudos to you all for bringing Carol's stellar performance to all of us.
What a heart wrenching performance this was. I cried twice, when she described losing her children and at the end. Giving a 'like' doesn't even begin to cover my appreciation for this story. It was amazing. I know it's fictional but I'm hoping she made her dreams come true and made herself a home after her indenture ended. Thank you so much for this.
Wow... if a story like that doesn't set one's priorities straight and one is grateful for the life one is able to lead today, I don't know what will... Amazing performance! Thank you very much, I so wish that there will be more to come!
Wow, what a powerful story and moving interpretation. I am so glad you are doing this and sharing this history, people need to see this. THANK YOU for honoring our ancestors whose stories are forgotten. We pre-ordered the DVD and I plan on sharing the link and DVD so others may learn.
She is very good! It feels very real. I have done reenactments most of my life. But none first person. Always "interpreting". Dressed in the clothing, pulling a handcart, making candles... explaining how it "was". What the pioneers had done. In the last couple of years I have started to learn more about my ancestors, specifically. Their names, occupations, etc. It makes it more intriguing. I'm a mother, who has had the unfortunate circumstance to hold my baby that had passed away. I thought I was going to cry when she spoke of her baby dying on the ship. She just has the feelings nailed down so well.
Carol named the baby in the story after a dear reenacting friend that passed just as the story was being written, and is reminiscent of the loss of my baby sister many years ago. I too am sorry for your loss and the pain this story brought to mind.
I am ripped to the core after watching this monologue. My great grandfather was an indentured servant to Canada. Although I don’t think his story was filled with as much suffering as Maggie’s was, it pains me to see that their pain and suffering has been long overlooked. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you Carol for a performance that touches heart and soul. Thank you for shining a light on the history of the thousands of indentured servants who came to the colonies. Most were teens and children. There was even a London program that rounded up poor children and shipped them, one-hundred at a time, to southern colonies to work in the tobacco fields.
No words come to mind that can describe how hearing a story that could very well be one from my own ancestry. Thank you for a glimpse of the truths they do not speak of in schools. Blessings to you sweet Lady. You are a fine teacher.
I have family from Ireland, too. Going by genealogy records there was a woman in my family who had to become an indentured servant and after watching this video, I pray she didn't have to suffer what Mrs. Delaney did. This video really touched my heart and it's so hard to forget the tales of sorrow and of the cruelties Mrs. Delaney suffered knowing that I have a distant female relative who had to become an indentured servant in order to survive her times.
Would whoever is cutting up onions cut it out? I can't barely the screen! Wow! What an absolute treasure! The tale and the telling. Should be required viewing in every American history class....
Lisa, I just discovered this raw look at what an indentured servant would have gone through from her own perspective and shared it on my Facebook page as well. Brilliant job by both actors, and thanks to Jon and the entire Townsends crew for bringing this to our eyes and hearts.
It is heartbreaking to think that such a story of a human existence is real in any form. Carol is superb and has done the Irish proud. My grandmother came over on the boat through Ellis Island at 16 by herself and by God's grace did not have such a life. I wear my name with pride and Maggie reminds me of why I do. Keep up the good work. It is worth doing and means a lot more than you know.
I am seldom at a loss for words but this performance left me speechless. I hung on every word anticipating the next and was left longing for the tale to never end. I rode every emotion to and fro and for a bit of time, felt as Maggie surely did. Thank you for taking me there.
In the Catholic cemetery in this town there is a 19th century section with rows of Irish names, and sets of markers for children, one after another from the same family, sometimes in the same month. Several families with same story. Carol brought back the memory of seeing that. We've lost one child I can only imagine what losing a household would feel like. This whole production is art and has soul. Thank you.
I was not prepared for a heart wrenching story so early in my day. I had to remind myself like others, it was a reenactment, a powerful one. Thank you!
Bravo!A stellar performance on a great monologue that really brought Maggie Delaney and all her suffering to life! You really honored the life of this character!
Oh, dear lord! Just when I think that’s you can’t get any better, you up your game this was most excellent and thought provoking. The woman representing Maggie had me so enthralled that I forgot that I was watching a video and felt that I was right there with her. Thanks to all of involved
My grandmother came over from Poland as an indentured servant to pay for her passage. My grandfather came a little latter and recognized her on the streets of New York City, from his village back in Krakow , Poland. He suggested they marry and he would buy her out of her slavery. They were happily married until they died exactly a year apart in the early 1970s.

Part of my own family came here as an indentured servent. I had no idea it was so hard for many. Fortunetly he not only worked through his service but managed to learn a trade and enough money to buy property. That was prior to the Mayfield so my family has been here a very long time.
😥
what a story! Poor Maggie Delaney.
I praise Carol for telling the story of these poor people! Thank you!
Kudos.
You have outdone yourself. Such a touching story. Please keep it up.
I was captivated by Maggie from beginning to end. Amazing! I would love to see more.
Mr.Townsend....Well done👏🏾...The indentured Servant papers was.enlightening ..
Wow.
With tears in my eyes and an unspeakable heart - I sincerely thank all involved for sharing Maggies moving story.
❤
I don't know how you pulled off this amazing video. The actors are flawless. The format was original. And Maggie. The actress who portrayed her should be nominated. She held me in the palm of her hand and made me cry. Well done.
Wonderful production!! Can't wait to show this to my class.
This was so beautifully done. It is heart breaking the way poor people are treated. Thank you.
I've had to put off watching this until now, when I had a quiet hour to spend on it, plus some extra time after to cry because I knew that was coming. This is AMAZING. Kudos to you all for bringing Carol's stellar performance to all of us.
Wow Carol is amazing, she made me cry. Please do more of these
What a heart wrenching performance this was.
Jennie Anderson thank you for your comment.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
@@lovemesomeslippers Thank you.
Carol named the baby in the story after a dear reenacting friend that passed just as the story was being written, and is reminiscent of the loss of my baby sister many years ago. I too am sorry for your loss and the pain this story brought to mind.
@@frankjarboe3271 Where do you two reenact at? Do you have a regular historical farm that you work at?
I am ripped to the core after watching this monologue. My great grandfather was an indentured servant to Canada. Although I don’t think his story was filled with as much suffering as Maggie’s was, it pains me to see that their pain and suffering has been long overlooked.
Thank you for sharing this.
My heart is so crushed watching this but it makes me grateful for all I have. What a magnificent piece. Thank you for this.
Outstanding! What a powerful story. Thanks for this look at a part of history infrequently told
Carol is an amazing reeanactor! This story is so moving, I was in tears while watching. Thank you for sharing this!
This lady put on such a wonderful performance! They both did. I was bawling by the end.
This was so great, that I had to post it to my Facebook page. ❤
Thank you!
This is beautiful! PBS worthy! Such a well done job, Townsend!
What a Wonderful talent and gift this lady has for telling the story of the silent. Thank you!
Amazing monologue! I felt so many feelings over her portrayal. This is beautiful; please do more!
