This current lot grew up with Rik Mayall in The New Statesman as their point of reference.
My god yes. I can't stop bringing that show up whenever anyone broaches the topic of dysfunctional UK politics; we're still talking about the exact same issues that show was writing informed sketches about 40 YEARS LATER!
In every interview like this, I keep waiting and waiting for someone to reference Yes Minister. Liz Truss even used the phrase in this interview and still no one discussed it. The idea that the civil service is determined to run the country its own way, regardless of any elected government, is not some new bombshell revelation.
If Yes Minister was new today it would be regarded as UKIP porn, and confused aunt journalists would be talking about the rise of a weird and whackly phenomenon: "alt right comedy", all part of the whacky world of Brexit Britain.
The problem is, half of the conservatives aren't conservative.

What is conservative? Most of its history it’s been to protect an elite against change the keyword being conservative, be it against socialists or communist or capitalists / business going back far enough when the elites were the landed gentry. Those lines are very confused these days but just saying they aren’t conservative is nonsense without a definition of what is.

I didn't like some of her ideas but I liked more than I disliked and she has ideas that would help us get back in track. Fracking for instance would bring in A LOT of trade and money for the areas especially in the north than saw the loss of coal and have never recovered.
It's easy to simply throw out a snide comment it's difficult to think long, hard and critically about an issue or multiple issues. Listen the interview and listen to what she says.
It drives me nuts that I moved to the UK in 2019 desperately wanting to get out of Germany and the EU... and then I arrive and the "Conservative" Party completely squanders the once in a lifetime opportunity to detach themselves from the more and more bureaucractic monster and authoritarian EU and go a different way with small government and focus on Britain's historic strength such as research, science, entrepreneurship, flexibility, practical attitude etc...
It drives me nuts how a government can be so incompetent they might as well have stayed in the EU if they are gonna do the same exact thing and implement the same exact policies anyway.
My god politics is not that hard... grow a pair and change the course of this country I BEG YOU.

I'd actually say the Yes Minister years were the good times because Sir Humphrey was only the bad guy half the time, the other half he was stopping Jim Hacker from doing something really dumb and usually something really bad for the country. Usually because Jim knew that "a year is a long time in politics" and while something would cause big problems in a decade "there is an election in a year".
The thing that actually shocks me is how fast the civil servants bent the knee to progressivism, especially after "weathering the storm" of new political fads for 460 years. (Or whatever number Sir Humphrey used to say when he always said "well..because it has been this way for 460 years, why would we change it now?"

I kinda disagree. In Yes Minister the civil service were extremely conservative and traditional and hadn't changed for hundreds of years.....but suddenly in the 2010s they seem to have radically shifted to a progressive, anti-traditional, activist world view.
I suspect she discovered Yes Minister in 2022 and is actually using Sir Humphrey's advice to Jum Hacker on how to avoid questions & how to shift the blame.

Here in the US, we have three primary governmental problems. First, is an unaccountable bureaucracy that is wholly aligned against Conservative governments. Second, is liberal governments that have both bad ideas and a tendency to act in a wholly illiberal manner when they are in power. Lastly, is the power and influence of the military-industrial complex which largely drives foreign policy activities.

If they want to limit guns - they run afoul of the Second Amendment. If they want to extend the provisions of The Patriot Act, they run afoul of the Fourth Amendment. Francis is correct to point out that the Conservatives have had 14 years to reverse Blair's and Brown's policies. Truss is disingenuous to portray herself and her fellow Tory MPs as political innocents when they came to power in 2010. Cameron and his advisers referred to Blair as 'The Master'. They saw Blair as the model to follow, if they were to stay in power for 14 years. (New Labour under Blair and Brown was in power for 13 years). They have achieved what they set out to achieve.
Truss may be excused for not having understood Liability Driven Investment Strategies but the person she made her Chancellor certainly should have known about them. Pension funds were taking leveraged bets on interest rates because interest rates were and had been too low for the funds to meet the demands on their funds. Likewise the Bank of England is now seeking government funds to cover the losses the Bank made from buying gilts at 0% and holding them as interest rates rose. Together with house prices at ridiculous levels, these are entirely predictable consequences of Quantitative Easing. So is the eradication of entrepreneurship in building successful businesses and its replacement by a rentier economy where enrichment occurs through holding assets. Truss and Kwarteng were ignorant of these issues because they never questioned Brown's policy of QE. It was simply easier to continue the policy and keep the Ministerial salary and car.
Yes and no. The Cons had to live with the Lib Dems for the first five years. There were limits to what they could do because they had to keep the Lib Dems sweet.
Then from 2016 to 2020 the entire bandwidth of the government was taken up by Brexit.
The party chose Boris as leader and PM and thought that he would be an abrupt break from the past. It turned out that Boris had no idea and he was basically another Blair fanboy once you scratch beneath the surface.
Then along came Covid which also stopped all government initiative for at least two years.
I agreed with her basic agenda, her mistake (easy to say in my chair) was not to front out the planned revolt by the banking sector. She needed to be stronger, like Thatcher was.
Everyone seems to forget how Truss was/is a peak neoliberal and globalist, believing in the wisdom of bankers and financiers, but now acts surprised when they do what they always do, thwarting government policies

She was clearly unaware that things like the Equality Act 2010 were not about equality etc when she became an MP. This is true of nearly every MP. Few got into politics because they wanted to change these constitutional things - they were just good at getting selected by their local party and then had good luck to get elected.
What we need to do over the next 4 years is develop a national movement, using Truss's ideas, (but not her) and people like David Starkey, to take forward these ideas and develop ways to communicate them to other politicians, media and the public.

Back in my days in the Civil Service, I worked with both Truss and Johnson, both had the brains of a rocking horse. If these were among the best the Tories had, god help us all.

As a party member I put Liz in the job as the most conservative candidate, when she was removed by spineless MP's I left the party for ever too. She is constantly blamed for interest rates when the greedy financial sector were just waiting for any excuse to raise rates and make vast profits. It would have happened at any moment anyway and when Sunak was installed and undid her policies the rates didn't come down - proving her policies were not the cause, just an excuse to raise them. I just think its a pity she won't get a proper chance at fixing the Tories as no one gets a second go.

Lizz Truss is quite right about why LDI became a problem. Because of earlier regulations preventing pension funds investing in equities and other more conventional products.

Many seem to have already made their minds up, but I think a lot of what she says has merit. The BoE for example conveniently decided to start mass selling gilts the day before the mini budget announcement, which led to the bond market crisis. Bond yields actually soared higher (and still are, I believe) under Sunak and Hunt, and yet not a peep from the media.
Numerous cabinet members have also spoken out about the gatekeeping the OBR does, where if it can't forecast something (either due to incompetency or the nature of a complicated policy proposal) it poo poos the policy and gives negative coverage to the media which in turn spooks the markets if the government goes ahead with the policy anyway.
In short, all these institutions have locked the government in to being unable to do anything but tax and spend. That is essentially her message here, and she's right about that.
The BoE/OBR needs sorting out, and I agree they are an undemocratic/technocratic limit on government. But that doesn't absolve Truss from needing to plan for pushback, getting people behind her, and political planning for how to get her agenda through effectively. The OBR isn't based any deep tradition/convention, it was set up by the Cameron gov and can be dismantled if the government want to, which could have a lot of political support if they made it a priority instead of using it as a political tool when it suits then moaning when it doesn't (same with BoE monetary independence which came in with new labour). Also everyone seems to forget how Truss was/is a peak neoliberal and globalist, believes in the wisdom of bankers and financiers, but then throws a tantrum at them when they act as they always do thwarting government policies.
I have some suspicions about the neutrality of central banks. But in fairness, the Bank of England did sketch out their plans some time in advance. It was she who decided to schedule her budget for the day immediately after the BoE announcement. Why do that? Surely you should wait to see how markets respond first?

I once got a job as a petrol pump attendant (this ages me) and after a brief lesson I was left alone, the boss had a long lunch. First fill up I did, the hose fell away from the pistol and the entire contents of the pump flooded the high street ... I could have started 'the Great Fire of Bournemouth' if someone had chucked in a live match. So I was sacked, not my fault but someone had to be blamed and I expect the boss was well ,insured .... As German I only have a very shallow look at British politics and the only thing I knew of Truss is that she came, she saw, she *got* conquered.

For example I have only two main political views that are important to me: I want Ukraine (and the free world) to win. I don't want asylum immigration from Africa and the middle east.
But there is no party with this two simple positions I can vote - sane (that excludes the AfD) politicians that campaign asylum immigration from Africa and the middle east are being town apart by the institutions and NGOs, as Truss said herself.

Her point is that the system needs to change, but the system is resistant to change, so we need to elect people to make changes, but the people who are elected don't have the power to make changes. She will never be better situated to lead change than when she was PM, but she resigned because the PM can't do it, so now she's trying to lead change by writing a book. She's just a fundamentally unserious person. She's like the stereotype of a woman who says she doesn't care where you go to dinner but then says no to every suggestion.

Reduce oxalates, carbohydrates, herbicide, fungicide residues, seed oils, plant lectins, antibiotics etc. Increase the grade 1 protein and animal fat.

The LDI time bomb was fully written up by a Dutch financial analyst a year before the crash. That paper was fully briefed in London including the BoE. They were accountable and should have unwound those positions a year earlier when the Dutch paper was socialised.

Parliament IS NOT SOVEREIGN -The PEOPLE are !
Parliament is elected by the people, the people are parliament. Its a representative democracy, they are the representatives. Parliament being sovereign is the same as the people being sovereign.
These are the same thing, we are the ones putting these people in there and we have been too lazy and focused on party politics to choose good individuals.
The Tories are still mainly to blame for failing to actually self-regulate who they choose to stand as candidate MP's, but the public have equally made no personal effort to vote based on things other than the ribbon they wear.
We would be better off being able to vote form multiple candidates from the same party per seat, one vote for the party you want to win the seat and one vote for the MP stand for that party you want to win the seat. That way the job of selecting candidates is devolved at least partly to the electorate directly.

Thanks to Lady Truss for appearing and sharing. A lot of it reminds of Yes Minister... combined with the problems within the Conservative Party. But it makes you inevitably wonder who can turn that juggernaut around.
