Just heard this morning that Gordon passed last night. What a major loss of a huge talent. Wrote lyrics like silk. Such a talent to be able to write so well that people picture an emotion.
+Sandra S --I was born in 1970, lost my dad in 1985, but he introduced us to some awesome music. He played guitar, wrote and sang backing vocals in his band, Jubal Cain.
+Sandra S sandra, love ones may "die" but they are still around. we are balls of energy, and this energy is contained by our skin. once we "die" we are free! your dad is right by your side, mom's and dad's NEVER leave us.
Why isn't this man in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? He's made so much enduring music. He's a lot more deserving than a lot of the people who are in it.
40 years ago, when I was merely 17, I thought this was one of the most heart breaking songs I'd ever heard... now, after having truly experienced the loss of love, I know it's the most heart breaking song I'll ever hear.
Yes, it's heartbreaking for me too, it brings the tears. 40 years ago when this song was popular, I was 29 and she was 21 we met and fell in love. We didn’t recognize it as ‘love’ and went our separate ways, meeting again years later, but still not realizing what we had. Now I’m 70 and she’s 62 and we finally know that it was the love of a lifetime, but we both belong to someone else. This song continues to haunt me, beautiful, yet bittersweet.
As a fellow Canadian, I can tell you that this man , Gordon, is a reflection of all Canadians and Americans, you will never find a more gentle and kind soul as this man. Proud to be Canadian.
This song is so effective because the lyrics come from a real place in his heart. You can't bullshit a song like this. Makes my eyes tear up every time. We've all been there...
I can see "the ghost from a wishing well" and the "paperback novel". I can feel the "I don't know where we went wrong" and i know "the feelings gone and I just can't get it back." Painting pictures with words must be the ultimate gift from the universe, and a mistress that no lyricist could ignore.
I saw him about 6y ago at the Hard Rock in Biloxi. This song brought the house down. Everyone was singing and tears were flowing... so much emotion! He truly is one of a kind and it's a shame this kind music lives only in the past.
I'm glad of that, too!!! Can't say truthfully that I love ALL his songs, but, I can truthfully say how I love MOST of his songs!!! Wish there were more singers and performers like him, nowadays!!!
I'm glad my mother introduced me to such an amazing artist, she is from your time. She passed away a few years ago, and all the music she left me with, makes me feel close to her when I hear it.
This is definitely a tear jerker for me. It relates to a certain person and event in my life and I miss her so much. You only have one life to live so live each moment well ❤️🩹 Amazing Song and Artist
45 years on and the pain of losing my soulmate is still there despite being happily married to my partner for 43 years " whats the difference beetween the love of your life and your soulmate she asked " " once a choice and the other is not " i replied " in your lifetime you will love many times but only one love will burn your soul forever "
+M Zach Have you heard the Canadian Railroad Trilogy song by Gordon Lightfoot? That is a little bit of Canadian history in music. It too is another classic by GL.
Its funny how some song can make you cry or can give you goosebumps you can play them over and over again and they still touch your heart.Gordon Lightfoot singing this sad but beautiful love song dose it for me ♡
❤❤❤️🩹♥️❤️🩹 This is probably my favorite song of his, absolutely love the violin strings it adds so much to the melody and is a great addition to his guitar playing. Have to say I love your selection of pictures in this music video, I’ve listened/watched this dozens and dozens of times. Thank you for creating this ❤❤❤
My wife and I attended a Lightfoot concert in Chicago back in the day. Later that evening he and some of his crew arrived incognito at Mother's, one of the first singles bars ever. It's still there as The “Original” Mother's. When told we had been at the concert he was very congenial and shared his drink, tequila and beer, with my wife. After all these years he's still on the road. God speed, Gordon, you're one of my favorite things about Canada.
I can relate to this song in my failed marriage. Failed is not really the right word, more like what he says, " I don't know where we went wrong, but the feelings gone, and I just can't get it back". Perfectly describes what happened........
I can definitely relate to that. This song tells a story like no other, and it really strikes me right in the heart. The love of my life and I split up after 8 years spending every single day together and it was the hardest thing I ever had to go through, but we've become friends again after a few years apart and I think everything is okay. She's with a new man, married, with a new baby, and it all makes me feel quite inadequate, but I guess some things aren't always meant to work out.
What a masterpiece of humanity and our frailties. Hereos often fail hit me hard. Noone wants to fail, everyone thinks for the best. But to quote John Lennon...life's what happens when youre busy making other plans. What a true artist painting a lovely storyline thru song and beautiful music
Had this song roaming in my mind, a habit of mine for a long time, poetic songs of reality, and here I go again listening to another great writer of songs
+Jonas Pilkington Would that be the candy wrappers? (Sorry, just couldn't resist LOL...s/b rappers). I totally agree with what you say, though. Such a lost art, unfortunately. Glad I grew up in the 60's/70's. :)
there was something very unique and special about 70's soft rock. there's never been anything like it, and sadly when our generation is gone, nobody will remember what real music sounded like
Daniel Neal I completely agree! as you said, music used to sooth and relax. or bring some atmosphere when you're with your wife/girl friend. and people used to sound different. different styles. now everybody sounds exactly the same, which is to say bad. they all think that being loud, and stretching a "note" out for twenty minutes makes them a good singer. and I haven't heard anybody in a very long time that sounds the same live, as they do on the record. or the cd or whatever. when Elvis sang in concert, it sounded nearly identical to the record. plus you can't even understand anything they're saying. and then when you do, like you said, it's full of filth!
Daniel Neal I totally agree with everything you said. this younger generation(s) are the most coddled people ever to walk the earth! they are offended by everything. they think they deserve anything, and everything they want, without lifting a finger to earn it. they would never have survived life in our day. hell, they have to have water from a bottle. we used to drink it out of the hose that had been sitting in the sun all day! my brother, sister, and me all rode from Seattle to north Dakota in a van with no seats! kids today have to have a dvd player, and video games to go 50 miles! everything has just gotten insane
I am 20 years old and 70s soft rock is pretty much all I listen to. I grew up listening to it and someday my children will too. Incredible music like this will never die♡
yeah human dont evolve that quick. get of our high horse theres literally million of people who like music from the start of time i wouldnt worry to much about 'real music'
Can't say truthfully that I love ALL his songs, but, I can truthfully say how I love MOST of his songs!!! Wish there were more singers and performers like him, nowadays!!!
The song just killed me to listen to when my first love just didn't have the same feelings for me any longer. 25 years later I know he did what was best and could see what I couldn't at that time.
I was 16 when this came out, he is 16 years older than me ! the Love you receive from his music is 99&44-100% pure Love and it always will be ! thank you sir 2
My first year in radio, 1970, I always reached for this song, everyday..I still love this as much as I did in the Fall of 1970...amazing tune...oh, those strings🎻😊💞
I speak with tears in my eyes as I listen to this, one of the most beautiful songs written by Anyone, and this guy has a gift! Had I not stumbled across G.L. 's Blue Album in the basement of a rental I moved into, I don't know if I ever would have run across this gifted man' music. Living in the car for a year and a half now and cd player taking a dump on me, I am musically deprived, and songs like these old ones I have loved so much make me cry.
This song is amazing Gordon is a AMAZING songwriter.i grew up on this kind of music and Van Halen(47 yrs old) our generation is very lucky we had REAL HEROS,Very sad times today
Talk about getting sentimental. It's nearly New Years 2024 and I pulled up Gordon Lightfoot on youtube. It has brought back a rush of memories. I was 21 years old in 1970. Such a great man and artist. I miss him greatly, but the music... Oh the Music.
This us my favorite song of all time. I was in 7th grade when it came out, and it just touched me, and still does. I've always wanted a man to call me "love." Gordon Lightfoot is awesome and still my guilty pleasure.
I hope you found a man to call you love! Songs like this one make me think of how blessed I am to have a wife that I can call "my love" for the last 32 years...
Read my mind ... I miss great music like this. I could write a paper back novel, only it would be the truth. This is from an era of innocence, fun, growing up, finding ourselves without the Internet and living life. Yes, I prefer that time.
Oops. I hit the "send" button too soon. Anyway, we grew up in such better times of innocent fun & far more safety as kids. I also prefer those days. Miss it so much. Nice to chat with you again. Take care. Carol
1220sassy you must be my age or older. wish all kids, including my neices, could have grown up in a place where you never locked up anything(for many years) and you could go all over town and never be afraid of being snached, car jacked , sold drugs ect. I was sooo LUCKY
jennifur sun Hi Jennifer. I'll be 51 next month. So yeah, our ages must be close. I also remember never locking doors to our houses & cars. Always felt safe & NEVER worried about random violence. My grandson is 6. Just breaks my heart that he will never experience those times. (sorry for sounding sappy)
In the 1970s this incredible song was just one of many incredible songs playing on the radio. What a time those years were. This song is definitely one of the best of the best.
Few songwriters can write something this poignant today and have a hit with it. I am sure they are out there somewhere, they just haven't found the muse that Gordon Lightfoot had. One of the greatest songs ever written. Maybe you have to be like Lightfoot, Nick Drake, or Shane McGowan (The Pogues) and actually live the song first. Another one of those addicted souls who manages to write lovely melodies despite his own hardships and transcends it. This song actually punctuates time...and it brings you back to it.
I remember so clearly the first time I heard this recording. It was in mid-July 1971. I woke early one sunny morning while on holiday at a seafront hotel in Eastbourne, Sussex. I switched on the bedside radio and heard the DJ announce Gordon Lightfoot's name. Then something told me to listen very carefully to the lyrics. I did so, and they not only spoke powerfully to me, but they seemed to be speaking for me as well ... especially the lines mentioned by David Lichner below, and his response to them. By the end of the recording, at last, I had an answer to something that had been troubling me for a very long time. Thanks Gordon. You're a life saver!
Claude Dahl We understand why you're nervous. You're going to have to start taking more responsibility for your own life as an American. You'll also have to start paying more than 1% of your gdp for your military defense, which is what you pay now as a Canadian, even though when the NATO budget was agreed on all nations promised to spend at least 2% of their gdp for defense. Currently Canada, as well as your irresponsible parasitic kin in Europe, force America to make up the rest of the NATO budget and America pays for 75% of it, and we use 5% of our gdp to do so. All the while you use your Canadian money for cradle to grave social welfare for all Canadians, which America cannot afford because we pay astronomically for the military defense which allows the world to be as orderly as it is, and for Canada to flourish in peace. Would Canada really be able to stand against Russia, who claims much of Canada's arctic oil reserves as their own? No world wars since Pax-Americana was established, when there had been two world wars in a span of 20 years prior to American hegemony. Your 30 million Canadians are wealthy solely because you sell to the massive American economy of 300 million people, and we share the same culture and language. You do see the moral right America has to include Canada into the American union. Fidelity to the Queen is no longer a legitimate excuse not to take responsibility, and to have the honor of calling yourself a member of the life giving savior of the world; The United States of America. But whether you join us voluntarily or not, it doesn't matter. Because we shall take what is morally and rightfully ours. Prepare yourself to become a man, even at your age.
+drServitis How long did it take you to write this? This is the comment section of a nice song and you're banging on about invading canada. You absolute loon.
All of us have songs that touch us more than others and I am sure that this song is one that affects a whole lot of folks in a special way. Much of Gordon Lightfoot's Art is of the kind that lights embers deep within the human heart. I thank the stars above for Artists like him. Peace
it's ironic you should say that because i felt like that when some friends were going through divorce and some other stuff was going on. the other two songs that applied to me personally was a song called Operator and an old country song called Angels Don't Lie. sorry you had to go through the pain. watching it up close second hand was enough for me. sadly i learned a lesson that sometimes it isn't just about who gets the home, the kids, the money ect. it's who gets to keep the friends, or in my case can the friends keep you. i was still friends with the two people involved and everyone else wanted me to chose a side and i wouldn't, and the two people involved never asked me to. i would up with a broken heart and a concussion.l also found out that people i though i knew could turn into someone else really quick
Well Gordon sang this in Oxford May 2016.....the guitar was brilliant as ever, his voice gone but hell I loved listening to him one last time. Magical.....this song will always be in my top twenty of my lifetime. Thanks and look after yourself All Right!!!
I go back to the most drawn out and painful break up I experienced listening to this track. It really helped me through and to move on and say xxxx that xxxxx. Thanks Gordon.
I heard this, first, when it came out...it still breaks me down...makes me weep...I miss my Michelle, terribly...I suppose no one will ever truly understand why....or, will I...even now, all these years later...
She was paranoid-schizophrenic...her whole personality broke down over the last eight years of our marriage, I used to sing this song to her, now and then, before it first started...even hearing it now...well, you know...some memories just never leave you. Unless they leave you feeling very alone.
mk floyd It's ok, and thanks, it's not your fault...it's called "life", and going on, past the past, only leads to the future... Even as Shakespeare wrote, "It is better to have loved, and lost, than to have never loved, at all..." (something like that), it doesn't remove the pain, which is good, because pain is a great teacher. I feel that it show us all our worth, when we look in the mirror, every day, and make it less likely to try to avoid it, so we see who we really are. It's songs like this that bring me back to the happy times we had, and I shed a tear for that, not because it's gone, but because I was lucky enough to be loved. Not everyone has that.
Ok, I've decided that I'm going to be putting this in an upcoming video...I listened to it a few more times...My dad used to have a pretty good "singing-voice" I guess, and I sort of picked it up, well, as well as I can.. When David Bowie died, it hit me kinda hard, so I did a tribute of "Space Oddity", in his name...I don't think anyone else has ever sung that tune at Repconn before, so it seemed fitting...Y'know, with the statue of the space-ship out front, it seemed the place, and the time...
I watched Gordon on stage, Chattanooga tn. February 2019. Wonderful, previledged to hear him. Before all the bull shit began on covid. Thank you Gordy!! We love you@ 💝🦁🐑🕊💫
It's hard for me to imagine a period of time in history when a guy like Gordon Lightfoot could be popular. It's a shame that music like this is nowhere to be found on the radio today.
I am 66 years old and I thank the Lord every day to be able to live through the best music of all time. Could listen to this 24-7.
I just posted that same sentiment on FB. So blessed and grateful
I'm the same age and I feel exactly the same way! 🥰

Keep safe !
I'm so envious. I wasn't born until 1989
Mark - the West has declined dramatically. I fear for the future.
Why isn't this man in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? He's made so much enduring music. He's a lot more deserving than a lot of the people who are in it.
Music like this is too beautiful to be called "Rock and roll"!
Dunno, it was good enough for B B King, Bob Dylan & Otis Redding.
Some people call him the Canadian Dylan.. Bobby has nothing on this man..
that's very true.
They both gave us timeless music.

Good story. I remember Mothers from my Chicago days. Another Rush St place. Great City
Among the greatest songwriters in history.
One of the most under rated singers and musicians of the 70s. Such a calming voice...
I can relate to this song in my failed marriage. Failed is not really
the right word, more like what he says, " I don't know where we went

describes what happened........
I can relate also.
chin up David. love is born,it lives, and sometimes it dies.

I can definitely relate to that. This song tells a story like no other, and it really strikes me right in the heart. hauntingly, beautiful...love all of Gordon Lightfoot's music, but this song speaks to me personally.
An endless classic song that I can lister to over and over again. Great tune.
This is a timeless classic from a great artist. They'll still be playing this on the radio 50 years from now.
There is no music like this today. I so appreciate being able to listen and go back in time. Thank you.
The bassist is a master. He sort of loops his arms into yours and escorts you through that heavenly voice. A peaceful excursion.

What a wonderful song, Artists back then seem to take you into their world & can make you feel their pain & sorrow.
Now the time that has passed is making us feel the pain and sorrow.

His music hits me "in the feels"!~ I am crying my eyes out!
If this song was written by lennon we would go mad. A Classic.
There's no showboating in the singing, no showing off his range, just emotion and storytelling. Brilliant in every way.
Another beautiful song with a message that makes sense. And what a great voice this man has.
This song is timeless . . a beautifully constructed lyric that expresses what we've all been through in our lives . .
Omg, i never heard this song.. Stumbled on it smoking a joint, brought a tear to my eye.. Just beautiful

RIP Gordon Lightfoot. Your music will always and forever be ranked in the greatest of all time.
Happy 78th Birthday, Gordon Lightfoot 🎉🎉🎉
Song is incredible, how anyone can give it a thumbs down is beyond me
These songs back then had so much compassion and came out in there voices. This is something that has been lost in music for a very long time now.
I'm a rocker but credit is due here. This is one of the most beautiful renditions of a song ever...EVER!
there was something very unique and special about 70's soft rock. there's never been anything like it, and sadly when our generation is gone, nobody will remember what real music sounded like

We are lucky we grew up with great songs like this one. I feel sorry for today's kids.
Lady, "WAP" is a great song and I'll fight anyone.
Music is subjective. Of course we feel this way because of our experiences, but they don't feel that way even though they hear the oldies
Rest in peace. Your music and lyrics touch our hearts. Beautiful and heartfelt.
Great song...always brings a tear to my eye 😢
+Joni Parsons every time
I was 16 when this came out, he is 16 years older than me ! the Love you receive from his music is 99&44-100% pure Love and it always will be ! thank you sir 2
I wish only wonderful things for you! He (Gordon) is unique...
'Just like a paperback novel/the kind the drugstore sells.'
One of my fav lyrics, from anyone.
one of the most beautiful and haunting classic masterpieces of ajj time
Totally agree .Until recently forgot all about this gorgeous song.Silly me.
Phenomenal record. Intelligent and touching lyrics, strong vocals and incredible harmony.
I've said it before and I'll say it again Gordon is an absolute legend. Just tell me one track that is not perfect, what a voice!

2020
LOL YEAH BUDDY 😎
Talk about getting sentimental. It's nearly New Years 2024 and I pulled up Gordon Lightfoot on youtube. It has brought back a rush of memories. I was 21 years old in 1970. Such a great man and artist. I miss him greatly, but the music... Oh the Music.
This us my favorite song of all time. I was in 7th grade when it came out, and it just touched me, and still does. I've always wanted a man to call me "love." Gordon Lightfoot is awesome and still my guilty pleasure.
I hope you found a man to call you love! Songs like this one make me think of how blessed I am to have a wife that I can call "my love" for the last 32 years...
exquisite lyrics and chords.....Lightfoot is master of his craft.....
Mr.lightfoot....your an AMAZING human being...thank you for your songs....its a life long gift to the world....God bless..😇❤❤❤
RIP GORD. My heart is broken. 😢
Read my mind ...
I miss great music like this.
I could write a paper back novel, only it would be the truth.
This is from an era of innocence, fun, growing up, finding ourselves without the Internet and living life.
Yes, I prefer that time.
Hi George. We haven't e-mailed each other for awhile. I agree with you 100% about missing this kind of music from an era of innocence
1220sassy nope that is usually my line can't wasit for Heaven no violance there
In the 1970s this incredible song was just one of many incredible songs playing on the radio. What a time those years were. This song is definitely one of the best of the best.
I could remember my uncle Freddie playing the guitar and singing this to me and not to long ago I asked him to play it gave me the goosebumps.
A very underrated performer. This is classic pop tune, well delivered.
Wonderful David, I had forgotten how good he was, lovely memories
fantastic the man is a national treasure
+Alex Schonski He's a Canadian indian still a national treasure!
+Alex Schonski HE'LL SOON BE AN AMERICAN NATIONAL TREASURE TOO, WHEN CANADA BECOMES PART OF THE USA, VOLUNTARILY OR BY FORCE.......
+drServitis dream on kid
Poetry in motion...Its Beautiful.
This is the most beautiful and tragic song I have ever heard. This song touches my soul like no other. It is my divorce song and says it all...
True, it is a touching song. Sorry things did not go as planned or hoped.
All of us have songs that touch us more than others and I am sure that this song is one that affects a whole lot of folks in a special way. Much of Gordon Lightfoot's Art is of the kind that lights embers deep within the human heart. I thank the stars above for Artists like him. Peace
I am thankful too. Peace to you also brother...
And thank you Miss Carrol.
it's ironic you should say that because i felt like that when some friends were going through divorce and some other stuff was going on. the other two songs that applied to me personally was a song called Operator and an old country song called Angels Don't Lie. sorry you had to go through the pain. watching it up close second hand was enough for me. sadly i learned a lesson that sometimes it isn't just about who gets the home, the kids, the money ect. it's who gets to keep the friends, or in my case can the friends keep you. i was still friends with the two people involved and everyone else wanted me to chose a side and i wouldn't, and the two people involved never asked me to. i would up with a broken heart and a concussion.l also found out that people i though i knew could turn into someone else really quick
For the ones we've loved and lost...
Thanks Gordon.
my older brother had this album. loved the tune. rmbr the "if you could read my mind". But never listened to the words until now! luv it!!!
Toni Beneke Great tunes from a bygone age Toni. As we get get older we just appreciate them more.
I cry every time I hear this song. Not very many songs nowadays make me actually *feel* emotion, like songs written in this era. I miss the 70s.
I heard this, first, when it came out...it still breaks me down...makes me weep...I miss my Michelle, terribly...I suppose no one will ever truly understand why....or, will I...even now, all these years later...
+Roachbait FNV If you can then tell her she might feel the same.......
She was paranoid-schizophrenic...her whole personality broke down over the last eight years of our marriage, I used to sing this song to her, now and then, before it first started...even hearing it now...well, you know...some memories just never leave you. Unless they leave you feeling very alone.
So sorry..........
mk floyd
It's ok, and thanks, it's not your fault...it's called "life", and going on, past the past, only leads to the future...
This is much better music than we have now.
I watched Gordon on stage, Chattanooga tn. February 2019. Wonderful, previledged to hear him. Before all the bull shit began on covid.
Thank you Gordy!! We love you@ 💝🦁🐑🕊💫
being young in the 70s was a breath of fresh air with this music!!! always live in my ♡
❤Rest in Heavenly Peace Gordon Lightfoot 🙏🌻
You will be remembered well. 🎼 🎸 ♬ ❤
It is so wonderful to see so many young people enjoying this!!
It's hard for me to imagine a period of time in history when a guy like Gordon Lightfoot could be popular. It's a shame that music like this is nowhere to be found on the radio today.
Took the words right out of my mouth. Isn't it amazing how much has changed in so short a time?
It is hard for those of us in our 60’s to contemplate the world in which we now live where a guy with Gordon’s talent wouldn’t be popular.
