Love the way he says working in a dust free environment and yet that shop is dusty as a nuns crack..... haha Nice work though, can't wait to try it out.
thx for the great video. check the moment when you give it the 'final blow' at 4.35...there is a lot of water coming out of your airgun. can't be good!
Good morning, complements for your videos, very nice and useful !!! I'm restoring an old kite surfboard, made of resin. At the moment I have carried out numerous repairs with epoxy, fiberglass and mocrosfers, as a result the surface is aesthetically very unpleasant. The original resin was transparent and graphics were integrated between layers. I made the same graphics with the PC, so I can print them by ink jet plotters. At the moment I purchased epoxy and fiberglass to re-laminate the whole board over the existing layers. I don't care about the weight, I wish it will be very strong. I also bought a colorant for resins, white. If you can, I need some advice to finish the work, to give the surf an aesthetic aspect similar to the original: To give a white background, so as to cancel all the remaining signs of repairs, which is better than the following procedures? Procedure 1) - First lamiantion using only one layer of fiberglass and white colored resin - Second lamination with the next layers of fiber glass and trasparent resin and interposing between the layers the printed graphics Procedure 2) - I spread the white resin with brush all over the surface to erase the signs of repairs - Lamination with all the fiberglass layers, interposing the printed graphics Also, do you think for the realization of graphics it is possible to use glossy lucid paper (the kind used for techinchal drawings and china) or if you must use rice paper? Thank you Andrew
Fantastic work, thanks for sharing with us. However I noticed that you don't take any precautions (mask) against the vapours of acetone and polyester. Is it for the video purpose only?
Hiya, thanks for the truly excellent video! Now does Matt shape in the same room or area that he laminates/glasses the board? If so, how does he clean the foam dust...does he put some plastic cover over everything during the shaping, then remove and vacuum the crap out of the entire room?
What's the difference between a hot coat and the gloss coat? The gloss coat is just resin with added wax correct? I made some boards in the past and just polished the hot coat.
Hello Fiberglass Fl.. I am located in Cocoa Beach and have an older surf sup I am trying to recondition to like new . This is an epoxy sup 9 ft the rails are soft and the fiber glass is showing worn out. I am starting to sand down and remove all pads and old wax and debris. What I need to know is can you provide supplies for me to complete this project? It's a 9ft x 28" sup. I wanted to add some carbon sheeting to the rails to strengthen them a bit. What are your thoughts on the best way to accomplish this..
We would love to help you! Swing by our Rockledge location and we can get you all the product needed. Carbon is an option but it can also be done with regular E-Glass.
Hello! I'm Ger from Spain. Thanks for this very good video. I have a question. When this glossy coat is hardened, will you sand/polish it? Or the board will be finished? Thank you very much. Greetings!!!!
A quick question: Can you keep your brush after using all the time in the acetone bucket, do you cover the acetone bucket when storing it? And is the second button also aceton? Great vid!
Yes you can. Although you cleaning acetone bucket eventually starts to become contaminated with resin and start to get sticky, that’s why you have a secondary clean bucket of acetone to clean off the brush that has been in the contaminated one. Keep in mind that the brushes will eventually be unusable but the trick is to keep everything as clean as possible to reduce waste. Waste is money. Hope that helps
You can thin with styrene and add wax solution...10% styrene and 3% wax by volume is Kokuas bullet proof formula on Swaylocks. Resin isn't meant to be sprayed, and you will be very happy with the sightlly thinned Reichold gloss. Even just Reichold by itself will lay very smooth. The resin acts as a "sheet" and pulls right across the board as it hangs off the edges.
Thanks for the Low down on applying a Final Gloss Coat: Quick question can you apply a second hot coat with a pigment if the inlay colour needs to be applied darker tint as Glassing tint didn't come out dark enough ?
Guys, these videos are amazing; thank you so much. Question: how do you prevent pinlines from bleeding when applying the gloss coat? I just applied a (cheater's) gloss coat over 8 day old pinlines and they bled. Too much brush pressure? Any help would be MOST appreciated! Thanks again for these videos!
how long do you let a glossed (PU) surfboard cure? is that time different than just a sanded hotcoat? I know it's more about the laminated fiberglass, but I'm still unsure, as the internet says 5-7 days, but doesn't really say how that does/doesn't change if you add a gloss coat.
I have a question, do you think it's possible to add some last minute spray paint/airbrush art before applying the final gloss coat? I've been told to do it after board's complete and apply a clear coat over the art but I figure if you do it before gloss coat then no need for clear coat. Thoughts?
Shawn, yes! This can be done, but keep in mind, as this gloss coat is very thin, maybe 2 mils or so, any ridges left from taping off for the airbrush work may show through. Just be very careful when you sand your gloss coat. A lot of times, especially w/ fabric inlays, the pinline is put on after the hotcoat is sanded.
There are many problems you can create for yourself - oil from fingers when laying down tape, tape residue, powder overspray, bleed from certain paints.
Hey, Hold that brush like a man !! seriously though I've just watched all of these...fantastic, so cool cutting with the razor blade..almost couldn't watch , certain i would mess it up 2 inches from the end, really appreciated these videos, great to watch assured skill in action..thanks !
By hitting the bottom of the board as the deck is curing don’t you touch the bottom of the board?? I’m confused should we touch a freshly sanded board or not?
If you must touch a freshly sanded board as I did, it’s important that I give a quick handsand job to the area that I touched before I gloss the bottom. Boards frequently get contaminated by humans or bugs. Sometimes you gotta re sand an area to make it “gloss ready” again. Thanks, Matt Holladay
He’s not touching a bare spot that is being laminated. He touched a bare spot that gets finished later. When he flips the board he will wipe it down again even if he didn’t touch the bottom.
@@pearsonmarine5565 Should probably say that then instead of saying not to ever touch it...and then he touches it. Apparently its fine to touch it...just clean it before you move on.
AngeLo Quiroz I apologize, I would not advise ever working with epoxy. But if you do have a epoxy board, free of any pinholes, sanded to 100 grit, this gloss will adhere ok. Sometimes the gloss will chip off the epoxy after years. I would not recommend.
All polyester resin is about the same viscosity, if that is what you're asking. Gloss resin is just a different kind of polyester. Do not use styrene to thin the gloss coat. it isn't needed.
Logan Clayton that's good to know thankyou. I've made a dozen boards in my lifetime and I've never used styrene to thin the resins down although I have used wax in styrene to get rid of the tackiness of the gel coat(for sanding). My local supplier never had any high gloss resin so I just sanded the gel coat down and buffed and polished and its worked for me in the past. I'm making my 13th board which is my first long board and as im not worried about the weight issue on a long board I will use a gloss coat to finish after the gel coat is sanded down.
@@briantrend1812 You don't need to use styrene at all. After laminating, put a few CC's of wax agent in the hot coat for sanding. I'm assuming you are referring to the "gel coat" as the hot coat.
logan clayton thanks got you. Yes the gel coat. I'm on the english channel south devon no car now and its flat as a pancake down here now. without a car cant even reach a wave beach to test my homemade board. nearest wave beach is bantham beach near Plymouth. its 35 miles from where I live. Hope to get transport sorted and then travel to north devon where the bigger waves are cheers logon
Hahaha overall he is super careful, these are just tips and best practices for those learning to build boards. You must always make sure you’re working with a freshly sanded board before you gloss. This means I would clean/handsand the bottom before I gloss it. Takes just about a minute and it will get you a sterile surface to gloss. Thanks , Matt Holladay
hey great tutorial, loved how thorough the explanation is!
Thanks Leo, yes Matt does an awesome job at breaking down the process! He is super good at his art!
Beautiful to watch a Master perfectionist at work. Nothing more satisfying than to see a non-compromising approach to quality work.
Love the way he says working in a dust free environment and yet that shop is dusty as a nuns crack..... haha Nice work though, can't wait to try it out.
Hey, great video as always!! What number of grit would you recommend for sanding the line left by the gloss coat? Greetings from the Basque Country!!

Awsome tutorial....very helpful.
I love when you say: because we're human🙏🏽
Great audio and explanation while doing, perfectly done, love this video.
thank you. Matt does a great job at explaining everything, you can tell he loves what he does!
Everytime I try to purchase from fiberglass Florida, the website redirects. Great videos. I'd love to try your product.

TheSilverSurfisher I believe that he shapes in a different area. That’s a lot of dust!
For a long time I wanted to be a shaper. More and more I'm thinking being a glasser is more interesting. Thanks great video

I'm no expert, but it could be that they won't hold up against the poly resin. Usually pinlines are done with resin I believe
Do you sand the board in between the glassing and the hot coat? Thanks
Do you need surfacing agent for the hot coat that's under the gloss coat, or just the very last coat?
Do you have any videos of doing this with a skimboard or building a skim board from scratch?

Nice. Can I use the resin on wood?
How many resin coats do you do before the final sanding and gloss coat? thanks
How much time has passed till you take the tape off?
Can we use just epoxy resin to glosscoat? Or do we need a special one?
Hi, it is possible to do the glossing after sticking sticker onto the board? I wanna stick large scale sticker, can u demonstrate about it?
So you don’t sand it after the gloss coat? That is where I am lost

Can be applied PU gloss coat on epoxy boards?
Thanks Matt and FGF. Nice tutorial. Boardsbyneira (Spain)
your welcome!
When you were giving the board a final blow I could see moisture coming from the air nozzle. You need a air dryer on that thing.
is there a hot coat before his gloss coat
Jack Davis yes these is!

What’s the resin to hardener ratio? You just guessed?
What’s the ratio from hardener to resin
1.5 to 2 percent...example 1quart of resin with 20cc of mekp is 2 percent.
what is the density of the gloss coat resin it must be lighter than the laminating and sanding hot coat resin would that be correct ?
also does anyone ever thin the gloss coat resin down even further with styrene?
