- The Contrarians Presents:POWER POP in Three Songs. John Grant and Steve Schnee along with a Patreon panel as we discuss POWER POP

The Shivvers - No Substitute
The Nerves - Hanging on the Telephone
The Romantics - Tell It to Carrie
1. Cheap Trick- Surrender
2. September Gurls- Big Star
3. Shivvers- Please Stand By
Power pop needs to have the “slightly dangerous” guitars otherwise it’s just pop.
These songs came to mind:
- KISS "Hard luck woman"
- The Knack "Good girls don't"
- Joe Jackson "Is she really going out with him"
- No Dice "Silly Girl"
- Nazareth "Place In Your Heart ", "May The Sunshine " and "Holiday"
Sorry dudes last three hahahahaha
1. Exploding Hearts- I'm A Pretender
2. Yum Yums- Be My Baby
3. Muffs- From Your Girl
Thank you for the FOY mention. LOVE Fountains of Wayne! Absolutely brilliant and criminally underrated…
Not. bad album in the catalog. R.I.P. Adam Schlesinger
@@thecontrarians2438 His passing was unbelievably tragic. Totally agree with every album (Welcome Interstate Mgrs. is a classic.) album being great.
Dada - Dizz Knee Land
Deepest Blue- Wanderlust
Is he in your heart tonight - Convoy
Anything by The Clarks.
A Girl Like You- The Smithereens
Down- Cheap Trick
Listen To the Radio- Cats In Space
The Quick- Pretty Please Me
The Barracudas- I Can't Pretend
The Romantics- What I Like About You
These instantly come to mind.
Joe Jackson ... I'm The Man
The Ramones... I Wanna Be Sedated
The Romantics... What I Like About You
Cheap Trick...I Want You To Want Me (Live/Budokan)
Fun Show Gents 👌🎸
Thanks, it was great fun doing it.

The Plimsouls Zero Hour

Nick Lowe (or any live version by Rockpile) - I Knew The Bride (When She Used To Rock N' Roll)
So it goes-Nick Lowe
Feel-Big Star
Another Girl, Another Planet-The Only Ones
The Who and the Pretenders are NOT power pop. Neither are The Gin Blossoms. Stephen has a good grasp of what power pop is. Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend" is a good power pop song not mentioned.
I saw Nektar in the mid '702 just an awesome show great light show
Doing this show made me question are these songs Powerpop, Poprock, New Wave, Pub Rock, or Pop Punk or just Pop. And you know what I concluded, who cares?!? They’re all great songs!
AGREE 100%!!
@@StephenSchnee it was great meeting you Stephen & great fun doing the show.
@@parishofrock2963 I love these kinds of chats, Parish! Thank YOU!
Matthew Sweet Girlfriend. Classic power pop.
Voice of the Beehive - I walk the earth - its not alternative its power pop ..

Badfinger- No Matter What
Raspberrries- Go All The Way
Sweet- Fox On The Run
1. The Plimsouls- A Million Miles Away

3. The Knack-Another Lousy Day In Paradise
The Knack-Another Lousy Day In Paradise... YES!!
1. Fountains of Wayne: Stacy’s Mom. 2. Cheap Trick: Dream Police 3. The Cars: Just What I needed
The vapors turning Japanese is a good example of power pop
It certainly is. Great song.
While some consider them New Wave and they've even been lumped in with the Mod scene thanks to their connection to The Jam, I'd say that The Vapors are closer to Power Pop than those two genres....
Nick Lowe- Switchboard Susan
Dwight Twilley- I'm On Fire
The Shoes- I Don't Miss You
This is going to be an interesting panel - three off the top of my head:
Tommy Tutone - 8675309/Jenny
Bram Tchaikovsky - Girl of My Dreams
The Knack - My Sharona
Powerpop: too heavy for pop and too soft for rock
The Records - Starry Eyes
Paul Collin’s Beat - Rock n Roll Girl
Raspberries - Go All The Way
There are a million others I want to include, but these three are untouchable.
1. If you wanna - The Vaccines
2. Chelsea Dagger- the Fratellis
3. Ah Leah- Donnie Iris
Nice to see something from this Century!!
@@MrSummerObe I purposely tried to throw in some newish bands people can check out.
@@gino88 good call!
Go All The Way-Raspberries
After Last Night-The A's
Do Anything You Wanna Do-Eddie And The Hot Rods

Tommy Ray- In Love Again

I'm not sure you would consider Badfinger's "Wish You Were Here" power pop, but that is a fantastic record.
It’s as powerpop as it gets and yes it’s fantastic
Some of it is power pop
Tremendous album. Should have been huge. “Know One Knows” is power pop imho
I agree that many might not consider it completely Power Pop, but it is an incredible album. My fave of all time.

There is no contest for #1
Go All The Way by The Raspberries is the greatest power pop track of all time.
The hard rock intro, the subject matter with the syrupy sweet vocal and soaring harmonies and fantastic melody. It is the top of the heap.
For #2 I have to put Jellyfish. My fave Jellyfish album is Bellybutton but I choose Joining A Fan Club from the Spilt Milk album in the #2 spot. Amazing vocals & melody with driving guitar and interesting transitions.
Lastly I will throw in Cheap Trick. I was going to pick You’re Taking Me Back but I choose the song Lookout that shows up on the expanded CD of the first self titled Cheap Trick album from 1977. It was first heard by most in the At Budokan album and in a rare instance here, I prefer the studio version over the live album.
Tal Bachman - She's So High Mandy Moore - I Could Break Your Heart Any Day Of The Week Dave Edmunds - Girl's Talk
I would call Marshall Crenshaw’s Someday Someway as power pop. In the 90s I’d say Material Issue’s Diane or Valerie Loves Me, and Matthew Sweet’s Sick of Myself.
1 September Girls - Big Star
2. Couldn't I Just Tell You - Todd Rundgren
3. Starry Eyes - The Records
1. “No Matter What” - Badfinger
2. “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight” - The Cars
3. “Behind the Wall of Sleep” - The Smithereens
1. Go All The Way-Rasberries
2.Abracadabra-Steve Miller
3.Just A Chance-Badfinger
If I could change your mind - Sugar
Going Underground- The Jam
Earn Enough For Us - XTC
Paperback Writer - The Beatles
Anything by Teenage Fanclub
How is KISS’ What Makes The World Go ‘Round NOT a power pop song?
1. Utopia- Cry Baby
2. Splender- Monotone
3. Katrina and The Waves- Walkin’ On Sunshine
I wanna say that Unmasked is a powerpop album.
Anything by the Babies
Off Broadway - absolutely power pop !
Most of mine were mentioned, but I'd throw "My Kind of Lover" by Billy Squire out there.
Billy Squier certainly crossed my mind.
I had Piper’s “Can’t Wait” on my “short list” (like 50+ songs)
That guy proposing "Jet" knows nothing about Power Pop. Get him off.
🤣you’re probably right Stone Dog, after this show I concluded I know nothing about Power Pop. But in my defence, I wasn’t proposing Jet. It was on a Power Pop compilation album!!
The takeaway from this episode is that, 'None of us are wrong, and none of you are right'. Stephen Schnee
Definitely the quote of the episode! 🤣
I thought it was pretty funny! Although I really shouldn't admit that.... :)
Tommy Keene-"Warren In the 60's."
Listen now-thank me later.

Groovy show, gents! I’ll do a 1990s take on power pop:
The Posies ~ Dream All Day
The Grays ~ Very Best Years
The Greenberry Woods ~ Trampoline
Keep up the wonderful work y’all do.
Cheers from The Big Apple. 🍎
Rock Out, Prog On and Power Pop Away!
Your clone and mine,
~ The Divine Doppelgänger of Davey Cretin, from CRETIN CLASSICS.
The Laughing Dogs' first 2 albums, on Columbia, are a master class in Power Pop. Both albums were only recently added to Spotify and UA-cam. It's a crime they weren't big. Just a few years too early for MTV. They would have definitely gotten some airplay.
I LOVE The Laughing Dogs!
Hey Grant, I was at that Knack show in Cleveland with Bozio on drums. Seeing Berton play the solo to My Sharona right in front of my face is still one of my favorite concert moments ever.
Here are a few of power pop tunes that I don't think have been mentioned yet that I dig....
No particular order....
The Toms - Can We Still Be Friends
Phil Seymour - Baby It's You or Precious To Me
Dirty Looks - They Got Me Covered
Laughing Dogs - Get 'im Outta Town
Pezband - Baby It's Cold Outside
The Quick - It Won't Be Long
First - not three songs but three alliterative elements for Power pop
Hooks
Harmonies
Hand Claps
Now 3 songs -
Matthew Sweet - Evangeline
Badfinger - No Matter What
The Smithereens - Time and Time Again
Three more
The Beatles - And Your Bird Can Sing
Matthew Sweet - I've Been Waiting
Replacements - Can't Hardly Wait
Just listing the first 3 that pop in my head. Two of which are top 10 favorite songs all time:
Badfinger- 'No Matter What'
Raspberries - 'Go All The Way'
Matthew Sweet - 'Girlfriend'
🔊🎶
The Jags - Back Of My Hand
The Pop - Shakeaway
The Headboys - Shape Of Things To Come
Anything by Smithereens, BigStar, The Replacements
How can I Saw The Light conceivably be considered power pop.
" No Matter What" " My Sharona" " Waiting for Somebody"
Hooray! Finally a Power Pop episode! It's damned difficult to choose a top 3, but off the top of my head: 1. Surrender - Cheap Trick 2. I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend - Rubinoos 3. When My Baby's Beside Me - Big Star
Great choices
@@parishofrock2963 thanks Parish 🙏
I love Joe Jackson's first two records...is that power pop?
close... maybe more new wave
Cherry baby by Starz . Thank god for fast forward button. Give ur picks instead of apologizing for 3 mins before ur picks. Just a suggestion ! Good show, though Grant !
Now, I have to go back and watch and see how many times I did that! Sorry!
Dwight Twilly. I'M ON FIRE!
The Vaccines-If You Wanna
3 that absolutely define it.....
1. the records - starry eyes
2. flamin groovies - shake some action
3. the shoes - tomorrow night

ua-cam.com/video/1GvkpskmfQo/v-deo.html
Toto Hold the Line for sure.
Stories - Darling.
Most jellyfish songs
Thunder Island
Pop in power form is spread through many genres .
What a show!🎉 Idk... Matthew Sweet's 100% Fun?
Thanks, it was a lot of fun
Sick of Myself is a perfect song
