    For "not being a welder" your welding sure looks better than the "professional" welds I come across from the factory. GM and Mopar seem to be the worst offenders.

    The welds look perfect to me. I took welding at the local tech school 30 years ago. Yes, I know vertical up is the "propper" technique but I never did it that way.... and I never had a problem because something was welded in the wrong direction either. That bed isn't going anywhere. Nice work, JC! 👍

    I learned welding and got my certificates (City and guilds 201) in welding and metalwork engineering in England, UK, 31 years ago and have to say, very good welding, clean welds and I would weld downwards, I have tried welding upwards and you have to be doing upwelds regularly to produce a proper clean, equal penetration on both surfaces.
    Great work on the reposition of the axle and the brackets.
    Love the video's and enjoying the work you are doing with all those vehicles.

    Nice welding!

  • @michaelroloff2804
    @michaelroloff2804 4 роки тому

    I am not a welder either, I only touched on the welding rudimentary and as part of my metal specialist training, but and that can be clear to everyone, a weld seam that is supposed to connect two flat materials is only good if it penetrates both parts sufficiently deeply. This means that the weld root must be sufficiently deep on both workpieces. If you tend to move the weld pool more towards one part, it will penetrate more deeply there. Which then leads to the fact that the other, less penetrated part is also less well connected. I don't know how much such a frame connector has to withstand tensile load, but when welding I always tend to strive for the maximum possible. If in doubt, I then just put a second or third seam over it. Especially in the case of commercial vehicles and their high payload, I would be more than uncomfortable if I imagined that a seam here would not hold, e.g. when braking hard.
    But, as always fine work an very accurate finish!👍

    When you mentioned needing more lights. Have you thought of having a roofing company put in some clear roofing panels that match you current roof panels? It will save on power bills. Vertical ups are always hard with a mig. Good root width, good penetration and even. nothing wrong with that.

    I've built a lot of trailers and a few truck frames and a lot of other things, I still don't like welding upside-down and I weld better going down also. Welding uphill seems like the weld is getting away from line of sight where as welding down hill the weld gets closer and easier to see.

  • @robertironside3166
    @robertironside3166 4 роки тому

    You do great work J.C. don't sweat the horse arse comments. I watch this one hardcore pro guy who pieces together busted excavators using torches and stick as well as the Mig now and again. The one thing he does you would dig is he uses that air hammer with that bundle of steel sticks on his welds as soon as he drops the stick or torch while it's still hot and it polishes his welds and makes them look cool. He goes by the principle that it strengthens what he does on the weld joint but I think he just digs the fantastic polish look it gives them. I know you use that particular air attachment to knock off scale from rusty frames to see how bad the rust is... but hey... it works like a charm on the welds. He just keeps it right next to him while he welds. Weld, hammer with the descaler... wash rinse repeat and all that. Works! Some other guy I watched does it as well [he was rebuilding the pivot on a big equipment hauler]. Can't hurt to give it a try [right up there with those carbide saw blades for cutting steel man!] :-))

Wild how he pounds the welds with that air hammer rig eh? I noticed he flattens the dimes to a smooth looking deal by doing that. Anyway, as per always well done on that truck. Nice!!
