    Wear earplugs, starting when you are a young musician or attending loud concerts. Protect your ears for the years and help yourself and others you interact with. I played and listened to loud rock music for years and lost hearing to the point of wearing hearing aids. Nerve damage CAN’T be repaired but some conductive hearing loss can be repaired. I had 2 ear surgeries that improved my hearing and I no longer use hearing aids. Wear hearing protection no matter what your band mates say. Do it!

    Love my custom westone musician plugs. Extremely comfortable. Almost weight less. They attenuate sound so evenly it doesn't even seem like I have anything blocking my hearing. I can't argue with your criteria, but custom plugs with specific filters are a million times better than anything off the shelf. However, the best plugs are the ones you wear.

    I use the Etymotic ER20 XS earplugs. They're relatively cheap (I believe I paid $24 for the current pair I have) and it came with a case for them so I'd say that's pretty good value. (they look like the ones you said were "Christmas Trees") They fit really well and I can hear just about anything when I'm wearing them. I usually only use them when I'm indoors rehearsing my drumline or in a smaller rehearsal space. If my students can't afford them, I usually tell them to get some foam earplugs, or I'll get one of the giant jugs of them and have them available for the kids to use.

I went through the custom process... still waiting a week later but need something for a gig this weekend. Ordered medium Earasers from Guitar Center set to arrive Friday Oct 29. I've been on stages since 1968 so my ears have been damaged to the point that my bass amp and the subs sound like blown speakers when the whole band cranks up. Ear doc suggested musicians ear plugs. We will see.

    • @AdamTanPercussion
      @AdamTanPercussion  6 років тому

      Thank you man and I agree! But I guess it depends on what kind of customs - the really expensive ones are kinda crazy prices when there are many reusables on the market. Awesome that you use customs though :)

  • @danby.
    @danby. 6 років тому +2

    Percussionist and drum set player, I just got a pair of custom IEMs called Tunz by Starkey. I think they're a bit overpriced (700 USD!!?!) for general use, but the fit is unbeatable since they're custom; I also had the opportunity to use them in a live studio and they really shined and justified the cost in that setting. I've also used Etymotic earplugs (~15 USD depending on where you get them) but I lost both my pairs unfortunately.
    Starkey makes custom ear plugs as well, with various kinds of filter options (-9 db, -16, and -22 I think), but again those come with a much higher cost. Comfort, discretion, and effectiveness are probably the most important criteria for me, but I'd recommend that anyone, especially us musicians, visit a hearing specialist or audiologist. Keeping track of hearing loss is crucial to our careers, even if you just do it as a hobby. You don't have to spend a bunch of money for a consultation, and even if you did, I would consider it totally worth it. Preventing hearing loss is so important.

    Now this isn’t the most cheapest way (because it’s not) but when I practice with a loud instrument, say a marching instrument or playing on a mallet instrument in a very not muffled room, I use my pair of Bose headphones. Now it sounds as about as muffled as the foam ear plugs, but hey, they work and I like them.

    I was considering buying my first earplug for sleeping especially during festive seasons (you know, Malaysians love to put some super loud bomb-like firecrackers regardless what religion or races or etnicity festive seasons, the bombing-sounds is increasingly more and more frequent than back in 20 years ago since everyone wants to grab some bombing-noise to merry the whole festive situation, sometimes I was soooo confused whether it is Chinese New Year or not LMAO) but ended up listening to your whole brief lecture about ear protection. Kinda reminds me why didn't I get into the percussion team in the first place, the main reason was 'too loud, it's hurting my ears', that's why I ended up joining the bass section (double bass) LOL
    Hmmm let me start with dirt cheap Daiso earplug first hehe

      Then how do you insert them properly?

    • @DangerDags
      @DangerDags 2 роки тому +1

      @@saintjabroni There are a lot of videos on here that can show proper foam earplug technique easier than it can be described, but basically when you roll them up you want to get them to the thinnest, roundest possible cylinder and then insert them rather quickly so they don't have time to start expanding until they are all the way into the ear canal and not visible at all from the front, that way when they expand they grow to the exact shape of the eardrums. Just be careful not to push on them while they are in and expanded or remove them too fast because they seal so well that the air pressure changes between them and the eardrum can be a little uncomfortable and possibly even dangerous.

    In my opinion, you don't really need hearing protection as a musician unless you're conducting, drumming, or playing in a marching band or drum corp indoors
