Hey dont say that 😂 i am one of them (older graduate) and i am not woke like most of these kids are these days 😂. If done correctly and with some added wisdom, humbleness and an open mind to it, it's worth it. It gives you deeper insights to what society is doing right now. Worthless in terms of making big money..yes! 😅 I ended up as a teacher who is now have to deal with woke students with little to no will to study hard and my degree in social psychology helps to connect to them on a human level and hopefully able to steer them back to sanity.

The cost has skyrocketed as well, since kids now demand much more posh campuses (campi?). I was at one in September that looked like the headquarters for a large-cap tech company -- the granite curbs around the roads and walking paths was just silly. The university I attended looked more like a minimum security prison, but a semester was about what I earned at my part time job in 2-3 weeks.

I graduated high school in 79. I had a psychology teacher that ranted about his brother-in-law in construction and how much money he made but we should choose the path like him going to college and getting a higher education.
He said sure I don’t have all the money and I don’t have the boat the camper or take all the vacations but it’s more fulfilling. Right there in high school. I said I’m not going to college I’m going to work.
I got into construction and had a great career. Everybody needs a car to drive a house to live in roads to drive on electricity, water, sewage System, whether it be in a city or a septic tank on your own property, food to eat , material to build with, etc. etc.
If you learn a trade, you can take it with you anywhere and find a job. Sure there are slow times I was in the trades for 38 years and always found work wherever I went, I am retired now, and I could go back to work today No problem.
I was amazed, they took vocational classes out of high school, metal shop, wood shop, and auto shop. It’s great to see people are finally figuring it out.

When banks gave loans, they made a judgment (cost analysis) and made a decision on if the loan was worth it. Can student looking for loan get a job, pay them back etc. This kept school tuition at a check and balance. Schools had to make decisions on tuition charges and if to high banks would refuse loans. When the government came in and kept saying YES to all loans even for basket weaving, schools knew they could charge whatever, and the government would continue to say yes. The government provided loans caused this mess and now is trying to look like hero's with loan forgiveness.

Machinists here have to have cortisone shots in their feet every six months so they can stand at their machines the full twelve hour shifts, because it's the silly American way not to allow sitting down when they work. Cortisone starts to damage the body after four treatments, but they do it anyway so they can keep their jobs. After they're too busted up to work, industry replaces them as if they never existed. Then, they're on disability and pain killers for the rest of their lives. Oh, what a wonderful life to be in skilled trades! Lol. Kids, save yourself a life of grief and stay in University.

I'll support what they want to do but I made it very clear if they are going to go to a university they will pick a career to go to school for and move forward with that. No general studies degree. No liberal arts degree. Learn welding, plumbing, mechanics, etc. that will start you off with no 5 figure(+) debt and income with a career that will always be needed.

The engineering profession produces more millionaires than any other career choice, professional or vocational or any other job. The other three letters have also done very well. @@AutumnLuvsJesus My Bachelors was paid for entirely by the GI Bill, and my Masters was paid for entirely by employee tuition assistance (and a couple of small grants) at my first employer out of college. Most people can join the military and earn the GI Bill, and many employers offer some level of employee tuition assistance. Student loan debt is a choice that you made. And even if you did, a Bachelors degree at state schools all across the country cost $30k or less all in. This is not a crippling amount of debt by any stretch of the imagination. A Masters degree at state schools all across the country cost $15k or less all in. This is a far cry from the nonsense Mike Rowe is selling.
The modern push for a college education was in 1993 by Clinton/Gore, and the emphasis was on STEM. Even to this day, Clinton continues to push STEM as the principal program family of his namesake college. HOPE scholarships, Lifetime Learning Credits, major reform/increase of Pell Grants, and many more...that was all Clinton/Gore. To be clear, I am not a Clinton/Gore fanboy. But no presidency did more for college education than Clinton/Gore (other than maybe FDR when he signed the original GI Bill into law in 1944) and their message was get a STEM degree.

@@free-qe6wx I think maybe I misrepresented myself here, actually I got scholarships and I only owed like 5k for my degree personally lol. I was lamenting for a lot of people I know in my generation that got suckered by the rhetoric. And idk what school is 30k for a bachelor’s degree, come on now. 30k per semester maybe. Mine was 150k. Again, I barely paid anything because I kept my grades above 3.5 and got scholarships to pay most of it. I agree that if you are smart about it, you can avoid that debt. BUT, when you have your high school teachers and college professors telling you that you can get these easy loans and the degree will pay for itself, then you have tons of people who get caught up in that. I’m thankful that even though I was not one of those people, I still have the empathy and understanding that this was a trick pushed on vulnerable young people for decades. I heard that garbage myself, I was just lucky enough to have mentors who showed me how to do it without the debt. You seem to be one of those “since it didn’t happen to me it doesn’t exist” type of folks. Not that I think their loans should be forgotten or anything ;) But I definitely can sympathize for them.

I finally broke down and paid 10K for a set of university classes to get my MCSD (Microsoft Certified Solution Developer) so that I had a piece of paper that said I knew what I claimed to know. This was late in my career, BTW, not at the beginning. 10K vs. 400K is a total no-brainer. One can get similar certificates for technical fields as well as "trade" fields. IMHO, there is no work that is not worthy of respect so long as it's performed in the spirit of service. Figure out what gives you joy and then figure out how to get paid to do that. Went to Vo-Tech in high school in the 90's to be an electrician. Was made fun of for it by many kids. Now I worked my way up to controls engineer, no college debt making well into the 6 figures and get calls every week for work. Those that can actually do something will always be employed.

I’ve only got 12k in debt during my four year college run. I’ve never went to a private college and that’s the problem. If you want these private colleges to lower the prices then have your kids not go to them plain and simple. Send them to city and state schools which are cheaper and the same quality of education.

My College tuition in 1983 was 1200 dollars per semester, for 12 credit hours, and i could add up to 18 hours for the same 1200 dollars. Electrical Engineer, finished my degree in 1992, it took awhile and I took some semesters off to work. Now I make 180k per year.

The reason a 4 year degree costs so much is the GOVERNMENT! $50,000 tuition, no problem. Just borrow it and put yourself in debt for decades. The more you can borrow, the more the school can charge you. How many schools would be charging insane tuitions if there was a cap of say $10,000 per year on borrowing for tuition. Also, certain degrees are useless without a Masters or Doctorate. Want to study the History of the Dark Ages? Either plan on becoming a Professor teaching that subject or just go to a book store and read about it in your spare time.

My neighbor picked berries in the fields as a kids came from a poor family, In high school got a part-time job working at construction site, and learned everything he could. After high school he became a contractor. He makes six digits and lives in a paid off house and cars are paid off. Both of his sons became electricians and both have paid off homes and cars. Now my friends son, wife and child live in their ADU rent free for eight years to pay off college loans. They bought a house and still are making payment on the school loan. Which means during those eight years they were not paying on their school loans. My nephew took a loan to study medicine he is traveling RN has the darkest circles under his eyes because he pulls double shifts to pay off his school loan

The "University Experience" has always been overrated, but never more than it has been for the last 30 years. I'm a child of the 50s and most middle class kids of my generation were guided by parents, teachers, and counselors to get on the college track. Of course, in those days, college was affordable. No one went into 5 figure debt to get a degree, let alone 6 or 7 figure debt like it is now. The jobs I got after graduation that I built a 30-year career on working in finance and accounting for high tech manufacturers, don't even exist anymore. The world will always need people that can build and fix things (I've got a guy replacing a deck on the back of my house as I'm typing this). I hope this trend we're seeing with Gen Z keeps going.

@@dr3725 I did automotive work for almost 20 years and just never got great wages. Went and got an associates degree in mechatronics. Mechanical and electrical skills. I know work for a major manufacturing company, maintaining and repairing CNC machines and robotics. I love it, it makes me think and learn, and figuring things out and fixing them is fun to me.

Its no coincidence that higher education is most expensive....all part of the racket that has become institutional learning in this country. I don't know if this country will ever wake up to these facts

My son after high school went to trade school and is now making north of six figures, while my daughter got a four-year degree in social work she now makes 45,000 a year and has 50,000 dollars in student loans. My daughter tells me just how unfair it is that her brother only went to school for two years and is now making over double what she is and has no student loans to payback.
