    Hi,
It's not that the diamond thing is a visual artifact, but rather than being ground from the one corner downwards makes the sides of the toolbit be at a lower height than the tip.
And this, plus the fact that once set in the toolholder, the toolbit will also be at an angle, what the workpiece sees is effectively an ~80 degree (not a 90 degree) toolbit, or a diamond or romboid-shaped cutter.
This is why you can do longitudinal cuts and 90 degree shoulders without moving the toolholder (not with your setup though). But you can still check this out if you look carefully at the toolbit when presented to a 90 degree shoulder.
As you were a time back, I'm also trying to make one of these myself because these are so expensive. So I wanted to ask if you'd be kind enough to tell us front and side angles of the toolbit in these toolholders.
Expected to see this in your video, overall after saying you saved images from the internet and did your own research, but didn't.
    Regards,

No problem its angled 80 degrees both ways.. so tilt 80 forward and sideways..

      Thanks so much Dave,
      What about the grinding fixture?
I also got confused because of your setup. You definetely can do turning and 90 degree shoulders without moving the toolholder.
      Regards, and thanks so much.

The jig holds it flat on one side and angles it 60 degrees. I'm measuring 60 from corner to corner of the cutter.

FYI. I believe Emma form Emma's spare room works hop uses a tool like this.

As to the Time line on the Diamond (Tangential) tool holder please see the following:
Found a very interesting description of a tangential toolholder in Turning & Mechanical Manipulation Volume 2 by Charles Holtzapffl ( reprinted by Tee Publications).
Page 535 shows the device with a round toolbit ground with a single flat and then the author's
version with a triangular bit. The original was used in the Portsmouth Block Factory (1802) to turn wrought iron pins. Another version had a centre hole through the bit and was used for wood turning. So Marc Brunell and Henry Maudsley could well be the source of the Tangential tool concept around 1803 when the factory started production so it may have been going for over 200 years!
The same book p996 has further material, an illustration of a toolholder on p998 is almost identical to the pictures in this post, the book was first published in 1843!
As I also commented for the best overall your require Both the Right and Left Hand tool which will allow you to make the maximum use of the cutting tool and its unique cutting ability. I have been using mine since 2012 and rarely use any other tool.
Always enjoy your videos and the effort you put into your reviews.

Didn't you see the pictures or read about it before you ordered? The selling line of this tool holder is that you can use cheap square blanks and only need to sharpen one surface which is diamond shape. Second you're not limited to 3" round stock on 3" chuck, you are limited by your lathe swing and if you follow the same logic just because you mount 4" chuck is not going to "stretch" your cross slide to accommodate 4" round stock you are still limited to your 3" stock. If you want to increase that distance you should mount your compound at an angle or even 90 degree in some instances. P.S. When I first bought my mini lathe I made my own tangential "diamond" tool holder and I love it!! But what I really need to make is quick change tool holder that incorporates this tool. This will make it a lot more stable and not so close to center line. I also made a round bit holder which produces amazing finish.

    I want one too!

Dave, I believe you need the right hand cutter. The right is designed to make cuts toward the chuck. Left would be used to cut away. Nice little tool and I think I will order one.

You may want to watch the video again before ordering. A good part of it is I'm trying to explain the AR and AL clearance issue. One allows you to turn larger diameters.

I'm sorry if I came across wrong. I saw that. I am just wondering if it is going to work correctly being meant to cut the opposite way.

Not taken wrong at all! The AL was factory recommended for use on a mini lathe. This is why I show all the different angles in the video for a stock tool post and also a QCTP. It does work fine and the next video to be released this Friday I show using it. Cheers my friend....

Your comment reads as I bought the wrong one which is why I said watch it again to pick up on the issues with the AR.

I think the search engine is messed up. I can type in something and get results. Type it again and different results. When I searched there were only a few and now I can't even find the one I watched.

I figure this was abandoned by the mfg industry 90 years ago for a reason. If this was the hot tip, tool mfg would be all over it.

@settle down Beavis ok , think what you want , I can show you shops today that have no cnc equipment that still do quite well. Those tools are a joke. You are talking to a retired tool and die maker lol.
