Check out the follow up to this video, which goes in depth on a project Stealth began work on BEFORE Sonic Megamix! ua-cam.com/video/Qk04Hk9Qwgo/v-deo.html
I dunno if you'll get to read this, but I composed a few of the tunes for the CD version of the game -- it's actually what helped me get the job with Galaxy Trail on Freedom Planet. IIRC it was the boss theme, Dark Fortress, Starry Night, and the final stage. I'm kind of sad the songs never got to have a home in anything official , but i'm happy you and others enjoyed them! :D
Holy crap! That's really sweet! Those were really awesome tracks (the boss theme was my favourite track in 5.0). I absolutely loved Freedom Planet and its soundtrack as well. Honestly I'm a bit of a fan of your work
oh my gosh, thank you so much!!! :D That boss theme was really really fun!! It's honestly thanks to Megamix that i'm still able to do any of this at all, so it was really really nice to see it getting some coverage in this day and age!
Yes, in fact! soundcloud.com/leila-wilson-woofle/sets/8vzrqpehgpv7 Keep in mind, these are just alpha tracks, so a lot may change, and a bunch of 'em may end up not getting used. xD But yes!! It's a great honor to get to come back and do it again! Freedom Planet's always been dear to my heart.
Awesome! Definitely going to give them a listen, especially seeing how much the soundtrack helped make the experience I had in the first game! I'm really looking forward to Freedom Planet 2 :)
To this day, I still play MegaMix. It's one of my favorite games of all time. The sense of speed and challenge is noticeable throughout each stage. And multiple playable characters too! This my ideal Classic Sonic game.
It’s hilarious how as a kid so many of us would play megamix and other fan games and hacks to get that classic sonic high Decade and some change later, the same peeps are riding that high to make actual stuff in the industry, even with SEGA themselves.
If Sonic Mania 2 becomes a thing, I hope he gets the person who did the soundtrack for 5.0 release of megamix for this next game. Maybe the level designs should be there.
That'd be incredible, especially if it was a collab with Tee Lopes! Also, funny you should mention that, the person in charge of the Megamix V5 soundtrack did the Freedom Planet soundtrack, and commented here, too! Honestly a fantastic artist.
At 9:50 you start talking about the Special Stages and how they're similar to Mania's. You do know that those Stages are just newly designed Sonic CD Special Stages, right? Similar to how Mania had newly designed Blue Sphere maps?
Mania's specials are way more different from their source material than the bonuses are. It's like a combination of CD style, Saturn graphics, and Heroes objective.
ZombieFobby Sonic Mania's stages are different enough to be considered their own thing. Instead of being a "destroy all objetives" like Sonic CD's special stages are, they become a chasing section in a more lineal enviorement than the one in CD. The only similarities are the 3D map, the fact that you are chasing an UFO and that the rings give you more time. Definetly more original than the blue spheres stages
Did know that some guys began making Sonic Mania Megamix, a Sonic Mania mod with intend to rebuilt the 5.0 version of Sonic Megamix as much as possible, it looks really awsome
Not to mention awesome graphics and that it's just generally an awesome game. Kinda sucks that there was never a sequel of any kind, but knowing post 1995 Sega, it would probably have been terrible.
Great video! I was a fan of megamix from the 3.0 days so it was nice to see such a faithful timeline, agreed with all your opinions. Fuck megamix was good though, I wish 5.0 could have been finished. Something about the super peel out in combination with the light speed dash in classic sonic was just supreme!
If it’s still true that Stealth would like to polish up sonic megamix in his spare time, I’ve love to see it become a reality. But it’s been such a long time since then and I’m not really sure if that’s still the case anymore
This looks really interesting. I saw a recommendation for a different hack and someone in the comments said megamix was a really good one and added new characters. I didn't realize some of the devs of this particular rom hack went to be hired by Sega and make Sonic Mania. I just knew they were big in the Genesis era Sonic hacking scene.
+Stuff We Play that's a genesis add on, it's not a new console, and the the 5.0 beta special stages are just a modified version of the sonic CD special stages, with the exception of being third person 3D it's not all that similar to the mania special stages
Not only could Tails fly like his usual self but he could also whip with his tails as an attack even while moving! I was waiting for that to be pointed out because it was really cool to use while going fast so almost no badnik could stop him! On a more unrelated note I find it perfect timing that I got into classic Sonic games and rom hacks just right around before Mania was announced.
I wish there was a hacking tool for Sonic Megamix 5.0 so I can at least make all the zones fully playable. Unfortunately I have no idea how to fix the crash bug after you complete a special stage.
Hey man found your channel via gigaboots discord. Really like what I'm seeing and it's giving me some awesome ideas for my own content. Gonne be binging you vids. Keep up the good work. Subscribed!
I waited so long for this. It's kinda why I am not so huge on mania as everyone else. Not to crap on everything the developers did but when you see megamix it's hard to give them the highest praise as if they were just some random people on the street that just learn to make games and made the one sonic game that better then even the Genesis, sorry but I can only give so much credit
What's impressive here is that, these weren't just some "random fans" but rather a group of dedicated fans with years of experience making this in their free time, some of which later went on to work on Mania
The special stages in sonic megamix were actually inspired by the SonicCD special stages though, it even used alot of the art assets from it, to include the UFO thingies. Other than that great video
For real!? They have reproduction carts of this!? I'm fuckin sold. Also Sonic Team should totally give them props and help them sell such a masterpiece.
+Kurogaea Monari granted, the reproduction carts are unofficial bootlegs, though the later versions of Megamix definitely look and play as Classic Sonic at its best
What I loved about megamix was all the different abilities the characters had only to be improved when going super and they each have unique abilities I hope they released the code for the game so it can be finished one day.
I won't call SFactor and Megamix the greatest Sonic 1 romhacks of all time. They just the good hacks like every else should have been. Megamix stands out just by lack of real organized competitors among community. That also lead to team's ultimate downfall, losing their development drive.
I've been binge watching your videos, and they're all great and all, but like, can you look at the camera? Lol. It looks so awkward when your eyes just rool into the abyss
I was actually able to beat that special stage in the 5.0 alpha, i used the most recent version of Picodrive on the PSP. I went to the special stage as sonic from Sunny shores act 1, Took me a few savestates to get enough rings. Afterwards the game takes you to the Time Stone Screen from Sonic CD with max score and glitched time stones, afterwards i was taken back to sunny shores act 1. However this version of sunny shores was incomplete lacking a lot of assets (ex. The timer Says TIM instead of TIME) Afterwards i managed obtain 50 rings and jumped to the ring again and it took me to different special stage, this version of the special stage has data stored on top of the screen while the floor was a bright pink, the special stage was incomplete so i wasn't able to beat it causing me to fall off and making the game freeze. Its been more than a year since I've done it so im not sure if it's possible to do it in another emulator.
I'm just now hearing the bits of Hydrocity. But yeah, I just felt that as far as composition and instrumentation went, these two were quite similar to each other
Before the video even starts I have this to say. Thank god someone told me I could turn the spike glitch off in the options because that RUINED the entire game for me. A game that's challenging is fun. A game that punishes you twice for one mistake, not fun. If the creators are paying attention, just take that dumb ass spike glitch out of the hack altogether.
Stuff We Play I quit playing the rom altogether until someone told me to look in the options. I couldn't even get past the first level before I found that out.
What a shame that the damn hacker ruined it for all of us... would have LOVED for them to have continued to work on this to give our old dusty Sega CD's some more love! The Sega CD is so underappreciated and could really use some fresh new content to play. Would love to see some hackers make some exclusive Sega CD updates to Genesis games with full CD music. Games like the Phantasy Star series would be AMAZING on the Sega CD!
Ok, thanks. Also, did you use a real system or emulator, because when I burn games (I only burn unreleased ones and fan games) they load once after 10 tries and never boot again. What am I doing wrong? Real games play fine.
Were you looking at the little screen on your camera because it seems like your eyes aren't looking at the lense? Other than that I really liked this video!
Glad you enjoyed it! Part of it (if you're talking about the beginning bit) was I actually got my foot caught on a chord and nearly pulled down a light. For some reason still went with that take haha
by the way i'm pretty sure mighty the armadillo was in knuckles chaotix and don't leave it just because it was on the 32x the 32x was a part of the genesis so it counts
If i were to rank the 3 stable (sort of) releases of megamix it would be 4.0, 3.0 and 5.0 because 5.0 has a lot more glitches than 4.0 or 3.0 and 4.0 is very good-looking for it's respective console
That could be a fun one! I've also considered doing ones on Retro Sonic (Christian Whitehead's fan project before he started doing stuff for Sega) and one on the games Square did before Final Fantasy that nearly drove them bankrupt
I thought there was a genesis version where you could play as Tails... I remember playing Sunset Hill zone with Tails and I don't remember needing Sega CD bios.
+Jeremy Abbott Perhaps there was, but I did not find a download for such a version, nor were they playable on a reproduction cartridge I recently played
Check out the follow up to this video, which goes in depth on a project Stealth began work on BEFORE Sonic Megamix! ua-cam.com/video/Qk04Hk9Qwgo/v-deo.html
Cool
I still play the one with sunset hill on a nespi case
I dunno if you'll get to read this, but I composed a few of the tunes for the CD version of the game -- it's actually what helped me get the job with Galaxy Trail on Freedom Planet. It's honestly a fantastic soundtrack! Not sure if you can talk much about it, but are you returning for Freedom Planet 2?
Yes, in fact! soundcloud.com/leila-wilson-woofle/sets/8vzrqpehgpv7 Keep in mind, these are just alpha tracks, so a lot may change, and a bunch of 'em may end up not getting used. xD But yes!! It's a great honor to get to come back and do it again! Freedom Planet's always been dear to my heart.

+RedSplat It honestly captures the excitement of the classic games for me too :)
i love classic more than modern

Another great video! It's been a good Hacktoberfest, if I do say so myself!
Same here man! Hope I definitely ended it with a bang!
What is the best Sonic game? What is the best Sonic romhack? Let me know!
Best game will always be Sonic 2 for me. Though this looks really impressive!
Sonic 2 was great! Megamix is absolutely stunning, though I think the likes of 2, 3, CD, or Mania are better
Sonic adventure 2 battle
Gambit Platinum pocket adventure
Captaincarrot 25 correct
Man Megamix was the shit back in the day. Still is now. When I first played this my little mind was fucking blown.
Same here! It's really incredible!
DoctorEggrobo64 The premised is the same as Mania, chasing the UFO, the graphics is just like CD though.
That has nothing to do with what i just said.
It’s hilarious how as a kid so many of us would play megamix and other fan games and hacks to get that classic sonic high
Decade and some change later, the same peeps are riding that high to make actual stuff in the industry, even with SEGA themselves.
It's honestly surrealistic in a way
If Sonic Mania 2 becomes a thing, I hope he gets the person who did the soundtrack for 5.0 release of megamix for this next game. Maybe the level designs should be there.

Now exists the Sonic Megamix Mania and one of the new members is Leila Wilson aka Woofle.
Sonic megamix was my 7 grade go to rom .
+TheGreat NazzXG319 a classic rom hack
Great video. Love Sonic Mega Mix!
+MilliesTVTime 2 thanks! I has a lot of fun playing it!
At 9:50 you start talking about the Special Stages and how they're similar to Mania's. You do know that those Stages are just newly designed Sonic CD Special Stages, right? Similar to how Mania had newly designed Blue Sphere maps?
On the whole I felt they had a bit more similarities to the ones in Mania than the ones in Sonic CD, particularly with how they were laid out
Mania's specials are way more different from their source material than the bonuses are.
Definetly more original than the blue spheres stages
mania didn't have any newly designed blue sphere maps.
darkychao Have you jumped into the sparkles above a checkpoint before?
I once played a rom hack where you could switch between Sonic, tails, and knuckles instantly by assigning a button. It was awesome and 2D
By chance was it Sonic Classic Heroes?
Wish mania had the character diversity of megamix... One can only hope for future manias to be more megamixy
+Zero Exodus I think if a Mania 2 ended up just being a Megamix 6.0, I'd be very happy with that
Lucky you we have Sonic Megamix Mania out now! It's a theoretical 6.0 made in Mania's engine, and its amazing!
Did know that some guys began making Sonic Mania Megamix, a Sonic Mania mod with intend to rebuilt the 5.0 version of Sonic Megamix as much as possible, it looks really awsome
I do! It's a pretty fun mod, though not something I'll likely do a video on
Ristar has awesome music. I still dance to the game's music to this day
Such a good soundtrack
Not to mention awesome graphics and that it's just generally an awesome game. Kinda sucks that there was never a sequel of any kind, but knowing post 1995 Sega, it would probably have been terrible.
Megamix was definetly one of the most ambitious hacks for sonic 1 and definetly one of the best despite some of its flaws and unfinished state.
I definitely agree! Also, I would absolutely love to do a follow up of sorts to this video focusing on your Mania mod at some point :)
How about retro sonic? I hear taxman made that one and it uses a precursor to the mania engine. It also runs on the Dreamcast.
Definitely want to look at that and Retro Sonic Nexus at some point!
I had never heard of Sonic Mega Mix until this video, but now I want the game to be done
Even in its unfinished form, it's definitely worth downloading and checking out!
Stuff We Play true
Great video! I was a fan of megamix from the 3.0 days so it was nice to see such a faithful timeline, agreed with all your opinions. Fuck megamix was good though, I wish 5.0 could have been finished. Something about the super peel out in combination with the light speed dash in classic sonic was just supreme!
Thank you so much! Definitely agree. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best Sonic ever controlled
You should check out Megamix Mania
If it’s still true that Stealth would like to polish up sonic megamix in his spare time, I’ve love to see it become a reality. But it’s been such a long time since then and I’m not really sure if that’s still the case anymore

Great video James, very informative and well made. Thank you for sharing!
+Darkbren Game Room I'm glad you enjoyed it! A lot of energy went into this video and I'm glad the response has been very good on the whole!
Stuff We Play that's the way ti go man, I hope to see more content ;)
Mighty was in knuckles choatix so he was in a sonic game before
I meant none of the Genesis titles though. Chaotix was 32x.
+Stuff We Play that's a genesis add on, it's not a new console, and the the 5.0 beta special stages are just a modified version of the sonic CD special stages, with the exception of being third person 3D it's not all that similar to the mania special stages
Kevin Dunn 32x is a beast of its own kind. You are too young to know what you're saying.
There was actually a version 3.5 build of Sonic Megamix, which was for the Sega Genesis.
holy shit that soundtrack, why did this hack have to end cri
Most definitely a fantastic soundtrack!
Oh nice! To be fair, I think I forgot to mention that as it was an ability I personally never used
Well at least now he can use it in superstars as a power up so that’s always nice
I wish there was a hacking tool for Sonic Megamix 5.0 so I can at least make all the zones fully playable. Unfortunately I have no idea how to fix the crash bug after you complete a special stage.
It'd be awesome to see the engine released some day, though I doubt any of it will happen at this point
Looks stunning.
You know its time to sub when you stay engaged only realising 10 mins in the video
I really appreciate that :)
Great video mate
Thanks 👍

Oh nice! Big fan of him!
Sunny Shores looks like a 2D Seaside Hill.
I can see it!

Thanks!
This video gave me hope that we could see Shadow in Mania one day.
Perhaps! It's certainly possible!
Forgot to mention that Sonic can use the Lightspeed dash with the Genesis A Button.
I think I mentioned it, but didn't use the right name for it
2:50 more than Green Hill Zone, looks more like Sunset Hill Zone from Sonic Advance 3~ :T
+Miles Prower I really need to go back and play Advance 3. It's definitely an appealing look!
That Is one of my all time favorite Sonic Games!! Love It
Sunset hill looks like sonic mania encore green hill zone
I waited so long for this. It's kinda why I am not so huge on mania as everyone else. Not to crap on everything the developers did but when you see megamix it's hard to give them the highest praise as if they were just some random people on the street that just learn to make games and made the one sonic game that better then even the Genesis, sorry but I can only give so much credit

Love this game so much and also love the the starry night act one music
Same here! Phenomenal soundtrack here
The special stages in sonic megamix were actually inspired by the SonicCD special stages though, it even used alot of the art assets from it, to include the UFO thingies. Other than that great video
+RikiRaccoon of course they're CD inspired. But structurally speaking, I found them closer to Mania. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Same here! I'd love to see the game finished someday, though I feel the original team has definitely moved on from it for now
Mmmm that 3D blast music though…so good.
It's such an underrated soundtrack
Fam, I never hear 3D blast anywhere! That music was dope though! There are a few tracks on there that are severely underrated.
"The game feels faster and better than ever"
Me: explain this part 6:14. It's not a hate comment I just wanted to point that out.
It was always a bit glitchy, no matter which version
@@StuffWePlay yeah, because when I came to part of level 1 in 3.0, I flew straight through everything to the goal.
Ya know theres version 3.5 with knuckles and tails added on the genesis right?
I did, but for some reason I could not find a working download link for it when creating this video!
the links down? that sucks guess i should put one up then so people can play it
Check to see if its up now. This video was done back in October
Oh man... memories again..... i love both games haha
Same here! I can't wait for Mania+
How does he only have 3k subs I subbed
It's much appreciated! Going to keep the content coming!
Stuff We Play I do content like this except it's not hacks but it's sonic
I'll definitely give it a look once I get a chance!
Stuff We Play thanks
I won't call SFactor and Megamix the greatest Sonic 1 romhacks of all time. They just the good hacks like every else should have been.
Megamix stands out just by lack of real organized competitors among community. That also lead to team's ultimate downfall, losing their development drive.
Especially with how long it was in development, I definitely agree there!
I've been binge watching your videos, and they're all great and all, but like, can you look at the camera? Lol.
It looks so awkward when your eyes just rool into the abyss
Glad you've been enjoying them. Will try to be better at that! I've been toying around with this setup a lot, so still getting everything just right
I like this vid make more!!
I plan on it :)
Nice hack!
Thanks!
Man those special stages in mania. I don’t know how to react because they fit so well, but then I think about sonic R....
Oh boy...
Is their file sharing server still active?
I was actually able to beat that special stage in the 5.0 alpha, i used the most recent version of Picodrive on the PSP. I went to the special stage as sonic from Sunny shores act 1, Took me a few savestates to get enough rings. Afterwards the game takes you to the Time Stone Screen from Sonic CD with max score and glitched time stones, afterwards i was taken back to sunny shores act 1. However this version of sunny shores was incomplete lacking a lot of assets (ex. The timer Says TIM instead of TIME)
Afterwards i managed obtain 50 rings and jumped to the ring again and it took me to different special stage, this version of the special stage has data stored on top of the screen while the floor was a bright pink, the special stage was incomplete so i wasn't able to beat it causing me to fall off and making the game freeze. Its been more than a year since I've done it so im not sure if it's possible to do it in another emulator.
Interesting. May go back and test it out with a different set of emulators!
"Does this remind you of any official sonic game" yeah sonic cd, because those are the exact special stages from that game
Have you played them? They control and are a bit more like the ones in Mania, which granted, is a new twist on the CD formula
So Plus has finally finished development. . .so will Megamix return?
One can only wonder :)
Aren't the 5.0 special stages just the sonic cd ones?
No, because the layout of coins and the UFO behaviour is just like in mania
8:57 Hydrocity act 1 and Mania's Stardust Speedway act 1. Pretty good.
I'm just now hearing the bits of Hydrocity. But yeah, I just felt that as far as composition and instrumentation went, these two were quite similar to each other
Megamix is a legend
It really is!
Granted, the hack is now cancelled. But yeah, the spike glitch is a royal pain in the ass
Stuff We Play I quit playing the rom altogether until someone told me to look in the options. I couldn't even get past the first level before I found that out.
Didn't Sunset Hill already existed before the one in Mega Mix?
It was in Sonic Advance 3, though not Sonic 1
Yeah, I didn't say it appeared in Sonic 1.
Absolutely agree here! I need to revisit Stealth's early work at some point. Some of his other projects I've found are even CRAZIER than Megamix!
Great video! This hack doesnt get the attention it deserves.
Megamix always needs more love!
I love this video and Sonic megamix
Much appreciated!
Stuff We Play no biggie 😎😎😎
I'm interested of Sonic Mania
This rom hack was my childhood game
It's so good
I hope we do get a final version or oven just the engine itself would be good enough. I can only imagine what people could do with it.
Same here! In the right hands, some even more impressive stuff could be done with the Megamix engine
@@StuffWePlay Hell Goku Would've Been Included
9:50 is a sonic cd special stage, not a mania one...
Where can I find Version 5.0?
Check the page on Sonic Retro!
Retro? Games? Yeah im subscribing
It's much appreciated :)
5:00 when you don’t give a phuck about drowning
I play megamix everyday! Love shadow gameplay! Try Sfactor too. Killer soundtrack on that one.
It's a fantastic soundtrack! Also, reviewed S Factor :)
Do you have a link that will allow me to burn it to a CD-R?
I can't legally link it, but just google it
Ok, thanks. Also, did you use a real system or emulator, because when I burn games (I only burn unreleased ones and fan games) they load once after 10 tries and never boot again. What am I doing wrong? Real games play fine.
Can't help there! I emulated this one
You forgot to talk about the lightspeed dash, which is activated by pressing A.
+DuperGames 64 slipped my mind at the timr!
8:30 that's Starry Night Zone Act 3 not Act 1
Sorry mighty was in sega genesis 32x game knuckles chaotix. 32x was an add on to the genesis making him an original genesis sonic character.
2:04 Mighty was in Knuckles' Chaotix
I didn't say he wasn't
How Is Mighty There But Not Ray?
Same reason Ray wasn't in Chaotix, I guess
Wait Shadow wasn't made untill 2001. Why was it on the Genisis and CD
this was made after the games shadow appears in ...
It wasn't a "mainline" game though, as I say within the video
No it doesn't count
Also it's not technically even a Sonic game
If i were to rank the 3 stable (sort of) releases of megamix it would be 4.0, 3.0 and 5.0 because 5.0 has a lot more glitches than 4.0 or 3.0 and 4.0 is very good-looking for it's respective console
Aquaslash really was good when he made SFactor - Sonia and Silver!
+David Morris another impressive romhack there!
if someone give me the code of the homing attack... i would make Sonic 4 Genesis Edition
+FredSans The Cringe Animator? That would be really awesome
now we have sonic megamix mania
Perhaps that deserves a video of its own once its a bit farther along in development :)
What about before Megamix
Maybe sonic mania made the sunset backround in green hill based on the one in this?
Perhaps! That'd be really cool if it happens to be the case! One can hope so!
Where can i download this?
Check the Sonic Retro wiki!
You should try doing one on Doom (i.e. Before Doom 2016, there was Brutal Doom)
That could be a fun one! I've also considered doing ones on Retro Sonic (Christian Whitehead's fan project before he started doing stuff for Sega) and one on the games Square did before Final Fantasy that nearly drove them bankrupt
Mighty is in Mania now!
I'm excited for Mania+!
your intro trumpet killed my ears but amazing video
Haha thank you! I'll start turning it down a little!
