I did something similar with a $20k speciality piece of video gear that I had embedded 2 air tags inside! Spent 3 days tracking it through downtown Dallas. One thing I learned in the whole process, is that the police aren’t really there to help you. They have no capacity to do anything unless it’s right in front of their face. You HAVE to be your own detective today if you want any justice in property theft.

I had my apartment broken into in 2010 while I was at work and my things stolen. Cops wouldn’t do anything. I had to do all the detective work and found out a friend of a friend was selling all my stuff. Most likely scenario is she left it behind someplace and the dude found it. There's no identifying information, and he probably figured there's no chance the person was going to come back for it considering they've probably just flown out of the airport. He might have even kept it around until the end of the day in case the person showed up and then figured fuck it, they're not coming back, victimless crime and the kids in the house might like it. I doubt we're talking about someone rummaging through luggage looking for shit to steal.
It's still on balance probably not a cool thing to do because the airport probably has a lost and found and it's clearly a valuable and personal item, but I still wouldn't want to judge the dude without knowing him personally. What to do with lost property with no identifying information is always a little ethically ambiguous. Like if I found a wallet with some money in it and no identifying information or any way to find the person, I'd keep it. The only thing that makes this different is that the airport probably has a lost and found.
Also some people are bringing up the air tag having been taken out as a proof of guilt, but dude I would not know what the fuck an Apple air tag was if I found one, before seeing this video. I'd never even heard of them. They probably just put it out there because it was beeping.

There is no legitimate, legal or ethical way to do what he has done. It is not for him to decide, and if he took this, you bet he took other stuff before and after. Unless you found it in the middle of a desert or random remote place, there is no excuse in taking it with you. And I repeat this is a widespread issue in places like airports, amusement parks etc. you have people working for very low wages with acess to nice things. There have been many news stories and investigations into stuff like this, it is usually Lost and Found. Baggage handlers and TSA that steal.
