I’ll be honest…this is an EPIC idea Barry!! As one who lives in Montana USA, I appreciate all of this - the outdoor cooking gear, the skiing, and the shenanigans. Looking forward to Part 2!
One the biggest problems with the solar cooker is that you were using a highly reflective metal pan.. SO yeah all that potential heat was being bounced off. They work best with a black cooking vessel (Like cast iron pans)
@@Shelsight I get that it's a compliment but I hope it doesn't happen. They have way more creative freedom this way, big companies tend to make things way more complicated for the creators and the viewers.
I really hope you revisit the solar cooker! You need a black pot for it to work! And it does work easier in summer/closer to the equator. I have a very simple one that's just shiny foil on cardboard which I use to cook all sorts of things during hot weather when I don't want to heat up the kitchen.
Fair comment but the instructions should mention those things if they want the review to be more positive. I was surprised at them being happy there was no fire/flame: if the pot gets hot enough to cook stuff things get hot enough to be as dangerous as flames.
@@mikekuppen6256 ??? Hot pots are not as hot as fire, it's not even close. Setting yourself on fire with a hot pot is fairly hard, setting yourself on fire wit actual fire requires as little as having hair hanging too close. You seem to forget that the engergy transfer between fire and pot is by far not 100%. Other things to consider: with wood/coal you have to deal with the embers and ash later, with gas you have to run around with a gas container which always has a certain risk involved + the angle they probably wanted to go for: environmental advantages.
Love this episode and I’m glad to see all of you together again. For future ideas I would love to see the group rent a caravan and take a trip across the UK highlighting local food and flavors.
If they splash out for a motor home, I'd love a cooking challenge where they have to make sandwiches or some other non-hot lunch item whilst the home is on the move XD

Stoked to see James back for this miniseries! The BruKit looks a lot like a Jetboil, which is pretty ubiquitous for backpack campers. And yeah it's mainly for boiling water/other liquids for adding to dehydrated meals
Came here to say this. It's for serious outdoor activities where you are just boiling water and adding it to dehydrated meals, not bringing ingredients.
I've borrowed a jetboil before and they work fairly well for boiling water, but I wouldn't cook anything more than a dehydrated meal on it. If I'm cooking a proper meal, I stick with my 1980s trangia
I STARTLED MY FAMILY SO BAD WHEN I SCREAMED OUT "OMG IT'S JAMEEESS!!!" LOUDLY IN EXCITEMENT!!! YAAAAAY!!!!!!! THANKS FOR VISITING THE SORTED GANG JAMES LOVE TO SEE HIM REUNITED WITH THE BOYS❤
Yay, a nice visit from James. The snowy, mountainous environment is a very nice change. Somehow thought you'd be eating traditional foods, but the test of the solar cooker is good. Give me snowy weather and a cozy place to view it from. The solar cookers needed insulation underneath to protect from cold. You can make a solar cooker out of potato chip bags. Loved Ebbers icing with the skis...
Great video. I'm pretty sure using a pot with a mirror finish that just reflects the sunlight on that solar cooker was a good idea. Those things work way better with black cookware, which are black because they absorb most visible light.
I think it would work a lot better if the mirrors were rigid so that you could ensure the light was being focused on the pot. If they bend the wrong way they’re going to scatter the light and sort of defeat the purpose. Black cookware would certainly help too, so it’s not reflecting back off the pan.
YES thank you, I was scratching my head on why they would use a reflective pot when they're trying to heat stuff up using sunlight, seems like a pretty obvious mistake and I'm not sure how they didn't think of it
This is the comment i came here for! It was never gonna heat up reflecting all the light instead of absorbing the heat as intended. It just became one with the mirrors lol. It also def doesn't need to be somewhere warmer, using the sun to start fires in cold environments is an old survival technique.
I saw the folded camp toaster and immediately went back in time. Our cabin when i was a child had no electricity, wood stove for heat and propane tank stove for cooking. The toaster was a staple every weekend. Laid directly over the flame on the propane stove or by opening one of the holes on the wood stove surface (the spot where you’d add a log or two at a time). This gave the best single sided toast if carefully watched as to not burn it because only the side facing in would toast, the other side would still be soft bread, unless you turned it when the first side was ready. i think it’s such a core memory for me because as a child we didn’t have a lot so the camper toaster was also the at home toaster until i was probably 7/8.
Nice to see James back! The Alpkit is a knock off of the JetBoil, which I've been using for 20 years. They're great for hiking/camping, and yes you can cook with it. It's not just for liquids.
We had a toaster like that only more robust in the 1960s. It looked a bit like a box grater, and it folded completely flat. About the size and shape of a folded up map.
The outdoors + ebbers = a good time. Every time. Reminds me of how fun your "camping videos" from the allotment were. Ben pulling stuff out of pockets and sleeves is just timeless
The mSR pocket rocket had been the go to backpacking stove, and DEFINITELY need a review for the sea to summit collapsible pot/kettle. Would love to see Ben cook with it. A review of camp food options could be a fun episode too, reviewing "just add water dinners" to extreme calorie bars
I use the Sea to Summit collapsible kettle and have used it literally from sea (beach day cuppas) to summit (Kosciusko) and standby it 100%. Reliable, easy to clean, compact and light.
I'd have preferred they used the jetboil over that alpkit as its the original of that design but definitely agree the msr would have been good to do too due to its size
I have been using the MSR pocket rocket with a Primus kettle for years. Been thinking about getting a jetboil but haven't had a good enough reason to buy one. This Alpkit seems like a copy of Jeyboil.
@@duzzzz94 "This Alpkit seems like a copy of Jetboil" Well, that's because it is. Tons of people have directly compared the two. The biggest different I have seen is the Alpkit was generally a bit cheaper in cost and in production quality.
Brilliant to see James back, has been very much missed! In a similar vein to these, would be interesting to see some just general camping cooking supplies reviewed and some camping multi-tools as I am sure Ben would love them
I go tailgating at sporting events in AMerica. It's fun! The rocket grill looks perfect. Starts quickly, can cook a good amount of food. And it looks like it could cool down quickly too. Biggest issue with tailgating is that you need to be responsible before leaving your grill alone!
Nice to see James back. I don't know if it available in the UK, but the Cobb braai(barbecue) from South Africa is an amazing cooker and can go from a full English breakfast to roasts etc.
I am surprised that none of them realised the basic physics. A nicely blackened, from wood smoke, pan would have been significantly better, though I very much doubt that it would have got better than warm. I’ve been camping cooking for 60 years, cooking for up to 80 people per meal and the only efficient way is wood unless you have really good wind protection.
It's lovely to see James back! I'm also amused that when I came home from York, you dropped a video about York and when I came home from Paris you dropped a video about the French Alps...
I squealed JAMES when i saw the opening shot. Thank you for treating us with this appearance :) Am Watching all the Pass it on in Order atm. Just something about him that makes it that much more special :)
Loved the video! Ben taking the whisk out of his pocket had me laughing so hard. I hope you all had lots of fun on your adventure. Lots of love to you all!
The brew kit is often used in backpacking, I believe the common name in the US is a JetBoil. I use them all the time for boiling water to use with freeze dried meals or instant noodles or mac and cheese while camping and backpacking. Also amazing for tea or coffee in the morning when out in the woods. The small footprint and controlled flame makes it easy to use and the fact that the flame is so focused on the container means it boils water within a minute or less
We made solar ovens as a class project in the 4th grade (in the 70’s, because I’m old.) The best ones were insulated, had a clear cover, and only really useful to heat up already cooked foods, like hotdogs. Ben reminded me of my brother with his travel Maldons. I recently found a tiny little travel pepper grinder in my brother’s camping gear.
I recently on one of the shorts saw some folks talking about wanting James back for a challenge involving all the Chefs, and I distinctly remember a comment going "he's no longer with them" While the comment is technically correct, the fact this video comes out less than a day after seeing that just makes the irony oh so sweet.
James! I've missed James. Looking forward to the rest of this series. Ben just pulling random cooking stuff out of his pockets is so funny. Beautiful cabin (chalet?).
Not only are we blessed with James reviewing more cooking gadgets, but he's been sent up a mountain with Ben and Barry to try them 😂 I love everything about this series!
Really nice to see James back! And this is gonna be insanely exciting to watch! And I love it when you break away from your kitchen and do something special!
I think a lot of the first one's failure came from the pan being reflective and the fact that the steel in the pot takes a lot of energy to heat through. I've seen videos of people cooking potatoes (no foil) in 4-6hrs using twice your size of solar collectors. Honestly, the solution is a deep/insulated kettle (2 liter ?) with a small DC heating element (simple resistors) in it plugged in to a solar panel the size of your solar collectors. It would still take an annoying amount of time to cook , but it's compact, foldable, and no part would ever wear out.
It's funny watching the sorted team review these items. The alpkit is really made for boiling water as fast and efficiently as possible while being compact and light enough to take on multi day trips. The third stove is super cool though and might have to pick one up for some car camping adventures. Thanks sorted!
I would just like to acknowledge that you were up in the French Alps and neither your sound nor video quality took even the slightest dip. You got some great people in production and post-production
I own the second gadget, not the same brand, but it works great!! Took it camping, its perfect for soup, ramen, hot drinks, broth..its a great piece of kit if your on a budget, its easy to clean and control, and its really light so its easy to carry in my pack.
It does seem really cool. I wonder if it could also heat up tinned or bagged lentils or stew. Ben is right you would need to stew it frequently to stop it sticking but I see no reason why it wouldn’t be able to heat up thicker stuff. Given you can use other pots with it if needed you could alway have another pan for other food if needed.
My favorite stove for short excursions... I have sterno cans and a foldable tin cube for cooking. Works wonderful if you don't have to worry about weight.
That toaster does work. We had one when we were kids. My dad used it for camping. It's a dont walk away from it kind of thing, but yes, it does the job.
yes!!! i was literally gonna ask if y'all are planning on doing more outisde videos again like the Wilderness Cooking Battle and the Camp Food series from back in the day, and now you already delivered! Also, always lovely to see James back in a video!

Honestly so happy to see James again. While I love the Sorted team, he was my favorite ❤ hope to see him in more future videos (outside of this series). Glad he is doing ok, and hanging out with his friends 😊
wow, great video. beautiful cinematography, an adventure outside the studio and a visit from James🤩. could we want something more? I can't wait for the next parts. You haven't surprised me so positively in a long time. always loved your travel vlogs, you made my day😄
The solar heater Review: 'It's not love at first sight' 'it's warmer than cold' 3 out of ten ⭐️ sounds a big stretch... The slapstick with the matches was great. Great to see them having fun together!
I have a small camp stove like that for hiking and camping. I like to boil my water, take it off heat, then add a packet of instant potatoes. They don’t need seasoning, they fill you up, and they weigh almost nothing to carry in your pack.
Beautiful vid. First, lovely to see the French Alps; I'll probably never get there myself, so they were beautiful to see. Second, great to see James. Glad to see he still continues to suffer no fools (2:06). :) Will we get to see Barry in his mountaineering kit he wore in the video in which he dehydrated a lot of food? Fingers crossed. :)
In the US, I use the brand Jetboil which is very similar to that Alpkit. I love it! And use it often when camping. Yes, it's not perfect for all cooking situations, it definitely can do more than just liquids. Relatively light and multi-purpose make it great addition to any pack when camping. Thanks for reviewing!
The second stove is great for boil in the bag meals you can stuff 2 or 3 in the pot and then cover with water and boil. Also once your food is heated the cooking water can be used for a cup of tea.
This's just a fabulous episode! Thank you for the fresh angle on cooking gadgets, location, the inclusion of James (hurrah!) and the wonderful, wholesome, zany, aspect altogether. Was feeling a bit mumpty and glum, for various reasons, and this has me cackling happily. Simply put: compliments all round, to the professional/ amateur chef(s)/creators involved😂! Loved it🎉
That solar cooker really should work. I made one myself in middle-school and it worked perfectly. But I was frying bacon which takes a whole lot less energy than an entire pot full of stuff. Nice to see James every now and then! ^^
Not putting it directly on snow probably helps. There's no way that pot can get to 50C without melting the snow underneath it, and melting snow takes a lot of energy.
@@petertaylor4980 that would not matter because its purpose is to reflect the rays onto a cast-iron or otherwise darker pot which will absorb rather than reflect. Same concept on a sun shield keeping the inside of a car cool by reflecting the sun vs like blacktop pavement which absorbs the heat.
Rocket style stoves are amazingly efficient. You can fuel them from just twigs, which makes gathering fuel quite easy in any forested area. And yes, it consumes the twigs quickly, but there are a LOT of dead twigs available in any forest. Plus, when you are done cooking, heating, whatever, the fire goes out quickly. Which is an advantage when you just need heat to cook, but not for warmth.
Took me a second to register that James was joining them on this vacation, so glad to see the enduring friendship 😊

YAY! Good to finally see James again! He's sorely missed!
Love this idea and so happy to have James visiting. Weird to think there are probably people watching this who have never seen James before.
Glad James is back. Looking forward to this
I’ve missed this man, so good to see him!
Who was taking those aerial drone shots? What's with all this insane, beautiful editing and cinematography? I love it! And loved seeing James again!
A drone, probably.
It's funny watching the sorted team review these items. The alpkit is really made for boiling water as fast and efficiently as possible while being compact and light enough to take on multi day trips. The third stove is super cool though and might have to pick one up for some car camping adventures. Thanks sorted!
Really love when you guys go outdoors! I am a big fan of backpacking/camping cooking, so this was awesome!! Would love to see more in the future!!
I would just like to acknowledge that you were up in the French Alps and neither your sound nor video quality took even the slightest dip. You got some great people in production and post-production
Never thought I’d see a survival sorted but I like it!
Haha glad you like it!
this video has given me so much nostalgia for the old series in the woods and I love it!
This was a lot of fun to watch and felt new! I hope guys had a fun time filming this too ❤
I own the second gadget, not the same brand, but it works great!!
Love watching you all go on adventures! Looks like this series is going to be a ton of fun
Sorry, but how awesome is the cinematography in this!? It’s amazing how far Sorted has come and it’s so well earned!
So happy that James is back, its been way too long without his gingerness
My favorite stove for short excursions... I have sterno cans and a foldable tin cube for cooking. Works wonderful if you don't have to worry about weight.
Chef reviews of dehydrated camping food could be interesting
You took the words right out of our mouths!
So glad to see James again!! I hope he'll be joining more in future videos!
Fancy seeing you back on the channel, James!😉
Love it, guys! What a spectacular view to enjoy some fun cooking times with such great people. Would love to see even more of Europe! (I'm a dirty lower class American, so most of my vacation fantasies are delivered through other people like this... Thanks guys!)
Yay, James! Glad to see him again!
You all should have an outdoor adventure in cooking in Utah, USA! We have high mountains, red rock, and views like you wouldn't believe.
Ben pulling all kinds of stuff out of his pockets tickled me
Honestly so happy to see James again.
Great to see them having fun together!
this new production value with the drone, gimbals, and image quality overall is fantastic. keep up the stellar work lads
Will we get to see Barry in his mountaineering kit he wore in the video in which he dehydrated a lot of food? Fingers crossed. :)
So happy to see James!
This video was so joyful. Thank you for creating content like this, it made my evening (and reminded me of how much I miss camping with my friends!).
In the US, I use the brand Jetboil which is very similar to that Alpkit. I love it! And use it often when camping. Yes, it's not perfect for all cooking situations, it definitely can do more than just liquids. Relatively light and multi-purpose make it great addition to any pack when camping. Thanks for reviewing!
i’ve missed the outdoors cooking videos, and having James back for this new series makes it even better! can’t wait for the next episode 💗
I met James on the train not so long ago and he’s genuinely the nicest guy ever! ❤
So happy to see James back 🎉 👏🏻
The cinematography is off the rails this episode and I'm all here for it!
Yes! More cooking gadgets! Love those reviews and love You guys and James!
The second stove is great for boil in the bag meals you can stuff 2 or 3 in the pot and then cover with water and boil. Also once your food is heated the cooking water can be used for a cup of tea.
Absolutely love this!!! Yay for James as well!!!🎉
Double yay!
Using a non reflective pot would have helped a lot
Not putting it directly on snow probably helps. There's no way that pot can get to 50C without melting the snow underneath it, and melting snow takes a lot of energy.
@@petertaylor4980 that would not matter because its purpose is to reflect the rays onto a cast-iron or otherwise darker pot which will absorb rather than reflect. Same concept on a sun shield keeping the inside of a car cool by reflecting the sun vs like blacktop pavement which absorbs the heat.
Pretty sure the pot was the problem there
Rocket style stoves are amazingly efficient. You can fuel them from just twigs, which makes gathering fuel quite easy in any forested area. And yes, it consumes the twigs quickly, but there are a LOT of dead twigs available in any forest. Plus, when you are done cooking, heating, whatever, the fire goes out quickly. Which is an advantage when you just need heat to cook, but not for warmth.
literally made Tartiflette for lunch today after finding Reblochon in Waitrose, been looking for this stuff for years, weirdly well timed
Reblochon is the best cheese in the world 🧀
What a beautiful place, love this series....My favorite gadget HAS to be that "portable whisk" (grin) 😁
