      @MLG Melon I'm trying to figure out if you're joking or not. Just because Thanos has flesh does not mean that flesh is at ALL equivalent to human flesh.
      Judging that Thanos is able to take punches from Thor, Hulk, and the Bleeding Edge Iron Man suit without any aid from the stones and came out virtually unscathed, I'd say that his flesh is dozens or even hundreds of times more resistant to damage than any material we have here on Earth.
      Also, Hulk has been shown laughing off 50 caliber bullets and Thanos' durability is equivalent to Hulk's, if not greater.

    I think Mikey conflated “empathetic” with “good.” Someone can have an idea you can empathize and understand, but you certainly don’t have to agree with it. You’re not supposed to agree with him either and the story makes that pretty clear.

      Good or bad, Mikeys point was that they wanted us to empathize with the abuser. To humanize someone who was inhumane

    • @nootnewt9323
      @nootnewt9323 6 років тому +28

      Garvey Toure that’s the thing that is really bothering me though. Abusers *are* human and guess what? People are shitty and too complex to say that they’re humane or inhumane. People are capable of doing humane and inhumane things but that doesn’t make anyone inherently humane or inhumane. People are too complex to be put in boxes.
      Some abusers don’t believe they’re evil or what they’re doing is abusive. Some were even abused themselves. Are they monsters because they grew up to be what they were shown? I’m genuinely asking because no one seems able to answer that because it’s pretty horrible to call someone a monster due to PTSD.
      When an abusive parent hits their kid they are some who believe, they’re likely doing it out of love. Is it wrong? Yeah. I don’t think anyone will deny that, but the situation is too nuanced to say, “yep they’re just soulless creatures!” Because clearly the parent in this scenario doesn’t think they’re evil and will say that it’s “tough love” and it isn’t. It’s abuse
      Too often people want to just disassociate completely with people like this and say, “Ah well they’re evil anyways!” It’s more complex than that and much more difficult than anyone wants to admit, because it’s easier to put them into the box of “evil.” The problem is more nuanced than anyone wants to admit and too often people are too scared to admit it. I’m not saying it’s right and I’m not saying we should have empathy, but I think we should have an understanding and that’s the word I should have used.

    • @nootnewt9323
      @nootnewt9323 6 років тому +19

      I hate it when people say it's an incomplete movie. It has a beginning, middle, and end. Just because the bad guy wins doesn't mean it's incomplete, even if they'll still be fighting Thanos in the next movie. For example, take Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. For all intents and purposes, Voldemort won that movie. That doesn't make it an incomplete film, despite the fact that they would continue to fight Voldemort in the films to come.

      The ending of Infinity War loses its power because we KNOW Spiderman, Black Panther and the Guardians are coming back!
      Their next movies are already in pre-production!
      It made no sense to have them be amongst the dead when they clearly won't stay dead!
      Scarlet Witch, Vision, ONE of the Guardians {preferably Drax}, Falcon and other secondary heroes vanishing would have been more than enough!

      You're the one missing the point - That ending loses all its power the instant Spiderman vanishes! Why? Because everyone in the whole wide world knows Spiderman: Homecoming is getting a SEQUEL! Spiderman is NOT going to die!
      I expected the writers to not end the film in such a way where said ending loses all of its power!
      Again - Look at Empire Strikes Back and how that kind of ending CAN be done WELL!
      They could have wiped out ALL of the heroes in Infinity War and relied on entirely new heroes {Captain Marvel, Wasp etc.} to defeat Thanos and bring them all back in the next Avengers movie but that wouldn't have worked either even though it could still be called "logical" in-universe!
      But they could just as easily have had NONE of the Avengers vanish at the end of Infinity War - Half the population doesn't equal Half the Avengers.
      So your point could be made about it being logical in-universe no matter which Avengers vanished! My point is that it's not "Logical" in REALITY! It's not logical to destroy your own unhappy ending's power by having it affect a character that everyone knows is coming back!

      I mean, the "too many characters" thing does kick in a little bit. How many times do we have to see a band of separate heroes somewhat stubbornly organizing in the face of a threat that they all immediately recognize? Because it happens four times in the film:
      - At the beginning with Bruce Banner, Dr. Strange, and Iron-Man
      - When Thor meets the GotG
      - When Cap and his party meets up with Rhodey and Bruce Banner
      - When Strange, Iron-Man, and Spidey meet the GotG
      And that's not counting when Iron-Man and Spider-Man regroup with Strange on the ship or when Cap's group arrives in Wakanda. This is all on top of the fact that whether it could happen was the central premise of the first Avengers film. We've seen it. We don't really need these scenes because, with the exception of Iron-Man and Strange's interactions, they just mostly give off a false tension that almost immediately gets dissolved. It could've been handled better and without cutting any characters from the film.
      That's just one criticism. There are others. It isn't a perfect film. I would argue that it isn't even the top five for the MCU. Still a great film though and part of what makes a film great is being able to observe its flaws without those flaws seriously damaging the whole package.

      IllCaesar Except... They were all plot relevant... Let's look.
      Bruce, Tony, and Strange: Notifying us of the stones for anyone who missed the movies and telling Tony about Thanos. Important.
      Cap and his group: Talks about the two alternatives they have. Remove the stone or destroy the stone.
      Thor and Guardians: Talks about Thanos' plan and the location of each stone (Only useless dialogue is Quill mocking Thor)
      Cap and team in Wakanda: Discuss about executing plan until it's foiled
      And yeah, you already said the Tony and Strange talk was relevant. But every scene you mentioned was plot relavant and drove it forward. Could It have been cut? Sure, but it was still necessary.
      They also all give insight to character motives. Cap gave his motives, which was the driving point for pretty much his whole team. Including Black Panther. Quill in a funny way explained his motives when he first met the Avengers. Which was the guardians motives. Spider-Man did before he saved Strange, and Thor did when he spoke to Rocket. All scenes had character development and plot relavance. Too long is up to you if you needed all the info or not. I feel a few scenes could've been shorten or at least more interesting as well.

    • @KookiesNolly
      @KookiesNolly 6 років тому +21

      GenericGaming before watching the video, people thought Matpat meant that he is morally right whereas the video explains that he might be TECHNICALLY right, as in mathematically/scientifically it could work but MatPat conclude that it's morally wrong but never explains why because I guess most people believe the same and it's not a philosophy channel. I guess you didn't even watch the video or you don't understand the point of that video, but I wouldn't say it was misleading since the title never says "Thanos is morally right" and then concludes the contrary. According to the video, FROM A CERTAIN PERSPECTIVE, Thanos could be right. So really, the only clickbait thing about it is that the absence of uncertainty in the title.

    • @KookiesNolly
      @KookiesNolly 6 років тому +5

      Obi - what ummm the title is still right. Unless you assume that Matpat is going to argue that Thanos is morally right, the conclusion doesn’t add much to the original premise and the title. Again the title isn’t wrong, your assumptions are. Why would mat pat talk about morality anyways? That’s not the purpose of his channel. He discusses maths and stats from the beginning of the video and explains from the start that Thanos might be right in that regard. *The title is not a question that he is going to answer at the end of the video, it’s a statement that he proves throughout the video* .He just ended by opening the debate on an other perspective that has to do with morals and ethics but that’s outside the purpose of his channel and maybe even his qualifications. Even without that last sentence, everything in the video confirms the title. You don’t really need a conclusion.
      Did you even watch the video before commenting all that?

    • @KookiesNolly
      @KookiesNolly 6 років тому +3

      Obi - what « people want to click on it because of the title » well duh Einstein, that’s why videos have titles. A title isn’t clickbait simply because it makes people click because every title make people click. It’s’ clickbait if it’s deceiving, and in this case Mat Pat only deceived you if you made assumptions about his video and his content. If you know the channel, you know he doesn’t discuss philosophy and ethics but stats, maths and stuff like that so obviously that’s how he was going to approach Thanos plan, not regarding the ethics of his plan. It’s not his fault if you didn’t know that.
      A title isn’t misleading because YOU assume stuff about it and YOU CHOOSE not to watch till the end. It’s not Mat Pat’s fault if people did that. And again the video wasn’t about the morals and ethics of his plan so he didn’t need to conclude about that and you didn’t need to watch till the end to understand the point of the video. He just added another perspective at the end, that’s it, but it’s not the point of the video.

      You've got the subjects mixed up. Empathy is the ability to understand where someone else is coming from, even though you may disagree, and sympathy is when you try to relate it to your own perspective. However (and this is somewhat ironic), _empathetic_ doesn't mean that you get where they are coming from, empathetic means that that person _possesses the ability to empathise._ Saying that Thanos is "empathetic" is suggesting that _Thanos himself_ is capable of understanding where other people are coming from. It does not suggest that *you* can understand where Thanos is coming from.
      Sympathetic, though, does relate more to you than to the person it is attached to (English is inconsistent like that). Technically "sympathetic villain" isn't strictly correct, because most people are *empathising* with the villain rather than sympathising with them, but people use sympathetic more readily because it refers to the audience relating to the character, whereas empathetic refers to the character relating to other characters around him.
      The more correct term would probably be something like, empathisable or "easy to empathise with". We don't really have a good word for it, hence sympathetic is the closest alternative often used.

    • @studentsteph
      @studentsteph 3 роки тому

      @@SneezyReviews No I think that empathy is where you try to relate someone to your own perspective. Let's go back to the basics. The etymology of "empathy" is "empátheia" which means "in" and "passion" respectively, which refers to the "inner passion," or more subtlety, "inner feelings." So from the etymology of the word, you can see how empathy refers to relating someone to your own perspective.
      If you take a look at the types of empathy in psychology, the most common known one is "cognitive empathy," which coincides more with the basic definition of empathy: putting yourself into someone else's shoes; and hence the person who empathizes subsequently understands *why* someone is in their dire situation. And that's where Jay actually mixed up the terms.

    I didn't see the perspective in the millionaires and 'geniuses' that were ironman's enemies, captain had the nazis and his brainwashed friend, Thor was opposed with a giant suit of armor, the aether, and Hella none of which i could see in myself, guardians Ronan? Egor? Nope couldnt see their perspective. I'm running out of marvel movies, ant man another billionaire, hulk vs the military, black pantha well that was another power mad person, Loki in avengers and Ultron well they just wanted power, doctor strange had Kaecilious who was just as insane as thanos but has a far less seemingly thought out plan, and finally (i think) spiderman with Vultcher who might be the only relateable villain given his scope is so small scale though it is all about greed again and I kind of don't understand greed. I can maybe sympathise with their objectives greed, power, domination, money, recognition where those objectives exist, I can see and understand the.
    But Thanos in my interpretation doesn't see himself as greedy and he doesn't want anything extra for himself all he sees is suffering and he wants to help and through his insanity has seen a solution, his methods might be extreme but I can genuinely see a lot of myself in him and a lot of him in me.
    I'm not necessarily on the "thanos really did nothing wrong" camp but I have opinions and ideas that might not be as extreme as Thanos's but are certainly on the Thanos end of "normal"

      Ultron wanted power and control it wasnt about killing humanity cause he could have made us extinct far faster than the time it takes to print a few thousand clones and float a city, if it was about extermination hed never have let any human stand in his way for a second and there'd have been no reason to imprison black widow. Attention maybe comes alongside power but subjugation of a significant amount of the population through fear that hed cause a life ending catastrophe suits his MO much better and so power
      Killmonger wanted power too sure he had other motivations wrapped up in it but hed been left to roam the streets on the bottom rung of society and troden on time and again, he craved power to right those injustices but he wanted power over those who wronged him in wakanda and the rest of the world.
      Loki doesnt necessarily want chaos hes shown time and again he just wants power and wwhen he has power hes content, in Thor he wanted to prove he could rule, avengers he decided to settle for earth if not asgard, ragnorok he is Oden for a time and seems happy with that, he then wants to oust Jeff Goldblum as ruler of Sakar, takes leadership of the revolution and seeing that he wont get to rule for much longer he takes the most powerful object from the vaults, its only that he witnessed horror that he stood up to Thanos realising that there woukd be no opportunity ffor power if he succeeded.
      And vulture may have been slighted but in the end his motivations ran away with him, he got his pound of flesh and then he put dangerous weapons on the same streets upon which his family lived and lusted for money and power. I think the only criticism I have is why Bucky is shooting the invaders with primitive bullets.
    For instance; Shuri could have thrown together a Vibranium machine gun that shoots like what Bucky is used to, but looks a little more sci-fi.
    (Also, the team working on props could have had a blast with designing it, and I'd totally pay $250 worth of filament to 3D print it.)

    Another point on that "Killing Loki is a waste" thing. Who here actually believes that Loki is dead/going to stay dead? Because I don't. Even if Tom leaves the series they can adapt Kid Loki. Or Lady Loki. Or that one time Loki more or less regenerated and became the God of Stories.
    Point is, I don't think the character of Loki is going anywhere.

On the people who believe thanos was right, honestly it's one of those things where I can't discern if its real or not because it's impossible to tell the parody from the reality. But I've seen people believe in more abhorrent things for more abhorrent reasons so it's rather easy to believe that at least one in 10 people who says it means it, I'd rather not believe that though but eh. I'm not sure why I didn't notice this when I first watched FilmJoy's video, but it's interesting that he included Film Theory's video there. As you noted, the title is clickbaity. Strangely, a lot of people commenting on Film Theory's video didn't seem to watch the video, but MatPat concluded the video by saying that Thanos was actually wrong, especially from a moral standpoint.

      Spar10Leonidas yea but it isn’t clickbait. Film Theory makes science videos (at least the narrated by Matpat). Him ending the video saying that Thanos is wrong from a moral viewpoint isn’t clickbait as it wasn’t the major part of his video.

    Your content is terrific from what I’ve seen after discovering you just a few hours ago, and watching your videos since.
    While I wouldn’t expect this of nearly anyone else on the platform, based on your work, and ostensible motives and values, I think you’ll understand my compulsion to make the following point.
    The literal, root-based definition of “decimate” is to reduce by 10%; or in this context, destroy 10%.
    I’m not sure if you’re aware, but even Marvel is referring to the snap, in canon, as “The Decimation.”
    So even Marvel and the mouse house have seemingly fallen prey to the bastardization of words in modern culture.
    One of the reasons I enjoy your content thus far, is I find you to be of like mind, and to have similar standards for decency, excellence and general acceptability.
    It’s genuinely refreshing to see someone who clearly has a sense of decency, and respect for the proper use of language.
    So I know you’ll understand that while I don’t mean to be rude, I have to point out it is you who’s made the booboo this time.
    You’re so good, though, that even in the midst of misusing the word, you were still making a great point regarding the reverberations of the sudden vanishing of those taken by the snap, so while I can’t “give it a pass,” as they say- since the whole point here is to preserve the language and culture, and not incentivize it’s downfall.
    However, it is a testament to your talent, that even in the midst of decimating my enjoyment of this video, you were still doing very good work overall, and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to recognize both of these juxtaposed elements.
    Apologies if I’ve come off as rude. I’m just a stickler for such things, and felt you’d appreciate my point of view.
    Great work. God bless. Subbed.

      Personally, I think you come over as absolutely lovely.
      But you're mistaken about the meaning of the word "decimate". Look it up in any dictionary. I know that the root "Dec" relates to ten, but language moves on. No one complains that "sinister" actually means left-handed, even though that's the historical root of the word. The only way that language can be preserved is by stopping people from speaking it, and that would be rather a shame.

    Thanos' smart version of a plan would have been:
    1. Sterilize 80% of all sentient life.
    2. Create magical celestial objects near every star system with sentient life, which would develop into replacement stars upon that star running out of fuel, stabilizing the planets for further billions of years
    3. Introduce massive asteroids full of nuclear or infinity stone-powered materials
    4. Introduce every population, 1 at a time, to the power of the infinity gauntlet, and to the science of high tech power sources.
    5. Destroy half the universe's currencies (both physical and digital) instead, except for primitive societies that still use precious metals.
    6. Do all of this within 1 week thanks to the power of the time stone. Never age thanks to the reality and soul stones.
    7. Simultaneously convince every person in the universe to accept peace, love, and vulnerability of their own identity, letting others help in their lives.
    8. Imbue every life form with higher intellect, eradicating bigotry and religion.
    9. Eradicate everyone's diseases, permanent physical damage, and mental ailments. Kill all mosquito-like creatures.
    Thanos is lazy and lacks creativity.

    a sniper would be able to kill Thanos
    pretty easily, actually
    just because thanos can punch with more force than a gun doesn't mean he can take a bullet
    that is quite simple and poor powerscaling
    if you were to punch thanos with the strength of a gun it wouldn't phase him
    but the difference comes in the sharpness of the bullet and its piercing ability
    thanos has flesh and skin like most humanoid organisms in the MCU
    flesh and skin can be cut, using significantly less force than you'd need to do equal damage to the body with a blunt attack
    we see an example of this when thor arrives in Wakanda and attacks thanos with stormbreaker, the axe side of stormbreaker's head, the sharp part, pierces thanos' torso and nearly kills him
    although, i wont count this too seriously because stormbreaker is a magical and powerful asguardian relic
    an example of my point is that every entity that has significant experience with thanos that tries to kill him uses a sharp object
    (loki tries to stab thanos in the throat, instead of taking the attack like he does with many others he intentionally uses the space stone)
    (gamora uses her blades on thanos in her reality stone induced fantasy sequence and isnt shocked when it actually works)
    more examples:
    (in the scene in which thanos comes for the mind stone, if you look closely you can see him using the space stone to do away with War Machine's bullets instead of tanking them)
    ua-cam.com/video/yBsw7M4XuUw/v-deo.html at 4:09
    (WHEN BUCKY SHOOTS THANOS HE SHOOTS THANOS ON THE GAUNTLET AND ON THE ARMOUR, NOT THE SKIN, THAT'S WHY THE BULLETS BOUNCE)
    same video as the war machine thing, a few seconds later
    Onision's idea would only work if the sniper caught Thanos off guard though

    Fan of the channel and I enjoyed the video! I have to disagree on the "Thanos did nothing wrong" thing, though. I get that the subreddit is a joke and I'm sure not many people think it's a good idea in the sense that they find it morally acceptable and/or actually want it to happen but I've seen several people I know make the argument that Thanos "had a point" or that his plan made sense on a pragmatic level. I get the impression FilmJoy's concern isn't that he believes people are on board with massive genocide, it's that some of them don't bother to apply any critical thought to recognize that, even if you set morality aside, Thanos' plan doesn't make any sense.
    That said, I still thought Infinity War was awesome. I just wish Thanos' motivation would have been a bit more rational. I get that he's the "mad Titan" and all but they don't really portray him as mad in this film, just a pragmatist who can be cruel. He's also portrayed as intelligent, which makes it harder to suspend my disbelief when neither he nor the other supposedly intelligent characters who have dialogue with Thanos ever address the flaws in this plan.

    • @HydraulicDesign

      Thanos' thesis and plan are insane and wrong and absurd, but if you look at history and the sorts of ideas that have led to murdering millions...it's par for the course.
      In way I don't' think his plan really "matters," it's that it's not the comic books' "in love with the physical manifestation of the concept of Death" idea, that was a step too far. I'm curious if there will be any more exploration of his "Plan" in A4, and if we'll learn that Thanos is actually lying or mistaken about what happened to his home planet.
