  • Welcome! I share tips and insider secrets as a professional candle maker and biochemistry major, review candle and soap supplies, and just have fun. I’m passionate about making cleaner, more earth-friendly candles and cold process soaps as well as helping small businesses, and it’s an honor and privilege to have you with me on the journey!
🛑 IMPORTANT: Before ever attempting to make soap, you *must* do extensive research on lye safety. This chemical is highly caustic and dangerous (you can permanently lose your eyesight in a second or cause third degree chemical burns) if you are not properly trained in and executing proper lye safety.
NOTE: In all of the formulas below, I used a 5% superfat and a 5-6% fragrance load. I have listed the various additives that I used with each formula but these are totally optional.
In general, I used 25% water as a percent of oils.
These were made using two of the six pound Winston and Walter molds, so the amount of the additives used reflect this.
    FORMULA 1:
    30% Olive Oil
    20% Mango Butter
    20% Palm Oil
    15% Coconut Oil, 76 deg
    5% Castor Oil
-Additives: poppy seeds, 2 TBSP benzoin (dispersed in liquid oils and added at trace), 24g sodium lactate, 2 TBSP coconut milk powder, calendula flowers, 1 TBSP yellow mica, 3 TBSP TD
-Fragrance: 223g Organic Lemon Essential oil; 47g CS Lemon Pound Cake
Excellent scent retention. Fragrance accelerates slightly.
    FORMULA 2
    32% Olive Oil
    30% Coconut Oil, 76 deg
    15% Palm Oil
    10% Mango Butter
    8% Cocoa Butter
    5% Castor Oil
-Additives: 24g sodium lactate, 2 TBSP goat milk powder, calendula flowers, mica, TD
    Fragrance: CS Neroli Jasmine (5%).
-Notes: Excellent scent retention. Soaps like a dream. Fragrance very well-behaved.
    FORMULA 3
    30% Olive Oil
    28% Coconut Oil, 76 deg
    20% Palm Oil
    10% Almond Oil, sweet
    7% Cocoa Butter
    5% Castor Oil
-Additives: 2 TBSP coconut milk powder, 2 TBSP cane sugar, 39g sodium lactate, tussuh silk, biodegradable glitter, mica, TD
Fragrance: FC Love Spell Type (5%)
-Notes: Fragrance very well-behaved. Excellent scent retention. Very slow moving. Some soda ash. Oils 93, lye 84.
    FORMULA 4
    30% Olive Oil
    30% Coconut Oil, 76 deg
    24% Palm Oil
    5.5% Castor Oil
    5% Shea Butter
    5% Mango Butter
    0.5% Yellow Beeswax
-Additives: TD, mica. No sodium lactate! Still unmolds like a dream the next day.
    Fragrance: CS Rosemary Sage (5%)
-Notes: Excellent scent retention. Fragrance very well-behaved. Formula was very fast-moving, likely due to beeswax, higher soaping temp (oils 111, lye 127) and higher concentration of saturated fats.
    FORMULA 5
    35% Olive Oil
    18% Palm Oil
    17.44% Mango Butter
    15% Coconut Oil, 76 deg
    9.56% Coconut oil, fractionated
    5% Castor Oil
-Additives: 8 TBSP activated charcoal, 4 TBSP benzoin (both dispersed together in olive and fractionated coconut oil), 24g sodium lactate
Fragrance: 200g Japanese Peppermint essential oil; 70g CS Peppermint Eucalyptus
-Notes: Very good scent retention. Formula was very fast-moving, likely due to higher soaping temp (oils 113, lye 107) and higher concentration of saturated fats.
    FORMULA 6
    30% Olive Oil
    28% Coconut Oil, 76 deg
    20% Palm Oil
    10% Almond Oil, sweet
    7% Cocoa Butter
    5% Castor Oil
-Additives: 2 TBSP walnut shell powder, 1.5 TBSP bronze mica, 1.5 TBSP brown mica
Fragrance: NG Indian Sandalwood (5%), 24g sodium lactate, 2 TBSP cane sugar, tussuh silk
-Notes: Very good scent retention. Fragrance very well-behaved. Very slow moving. Lots of soda ash.

New to soap making. I must say this video is very informative. I love how you tested each bar. I made my first bar a few weeks back it was a goat's milk bar. It was such a amazing bar. SoapCal is awesome. It's such a great tool to use. I realized this once I got over the intimidation and learned how to use it, lol.

I love these kinds of videos.
I have made soap since late 2020 and have whittled it down to 4 soap recipes. Since the cost of coconut oil and palm went up so much, I add 15% lard to my body soap. In my unhumble opinion, I think it made the soap better.

Hi Daniel! Thanks for your comment. Yikes! I don't know that I would use that in a soap. I don't believe it is approved for skin use.

Tip to stop soda ash add Beeswax or soy wax to your soap recipe.

    • @earthglow
      @earthglow  Рік тому

Hi Daniel! Soda ash is usually created from soaping at a low temp and pouring at a very thin trace.

Usually I don’t get soda ash and I am a low temperature soaper but I always use 50/50 lye/ liquid. If you do a water discount you don’t get soda ash. The only time I get soda ash is with my activated charcoal soaps. Also I use corn silk instead. It’s vegan and cheap ( free for me) and has the same effect
